My apologies - by "a long paper" I meant an academic paper which is long (ie
many pages).
For publication in an academic journal, one needs to submit a Latex document
using the journal's own document type, and the environments supported by that
document type.
Many mathematicians write directly in Latex, but I much prefer to write in Lyx
and export to Latex for submission.

It is very common for a paper to be redirected from one journal to another, and
the submission document then needs to be changed to work with the new journal's
document type.
In this use case, Jean-Marc Lasgouttes' solution (below) is very elegant and in
fact shows another benefit of Lyx over raw Latex:

You could try, in Document Settings>Local Layout, something like

Style Paragraph
   ObsoletedBy SubsubSection
End

Style SubParagraph
   ObsoletedBy SpecialSection
End

Bulk changing environments in Lyx

2023-04-18 Thread Dr Paul Verschueren
Dear all -
I just had to change the AMS document type for a long paper.
I have made heavy use of the paragraph/subparagraph environments, but these do
not exist(!) in the new doctype.
Is there any way of doing a find/replace via Lyx?
If not, is there any alternative to hacking the Lyx source, and does anyone
foresee any gotchas with this approach?
(I'll obviously take a backup first).
Many thanks

RE: User list server settings

2021-12-16 Thread Dr Paul Verschueren via lyx-users
The Outlook client view has not changed. It does provide slightly more
information (see attached screen shot).

I have not come across this form of address line on emails from any other
source (it contains 3 email addresses!), so there is something unusual about it.

[cid:image001.png@01D7F286.F06688F0]

The “Reply” command believes the return address is:

“Daniel xraco...@gmx.de”

whereas “LyX Users lyx-users@lists.lyx.org”
would be more useful here!

Re: I think we need a better name than "MWE"

2021-12-14 Thread Dr Paul Verschueren via lyx-users
It’s not perfect, but I think it is worth pointing out that this is not Lyx
terminology, I have come across it in many communities. I note it has its own
Wikipedia entry:

In computing, a minimal working example (abbreviated MWE) is a collection of
source code and other data files which allow a bug or problem to be
demonstrated and reproduced. The important feature of a minimal working example
is that it is as small and as simple as possible, such that it is just
sufficient to demonstrate the problem, but without any additional complexity or
dependencies which will make resolution harder.

A minimal working example may also be referred to as minimal reproducible
example or short self-contained correct example.

RE: Lyx on Chromebook - Yes it works!

2021-04-16 Thread Dr Paul Verschueren
I assumed that the relative silence indicated I'm on my own, so I thought I
would make an initial investigation this lunchtime.
Great news - it turns out to be relatively trivial to get Lyx working under
Chrome OS, and there is no need to compile a native app.

Chrome OS sets up a small VM with a copy of Debian 10, and Lyx 2.3.2 installs
cleanly via apt(?) - even for a Windows die-hard like myself with no previous
Linux exposure.
Performance does not seem an issue - there is a slight slow-down noticeable
compiling a complex 40 page math paper, but it is perfectly acceptable (to me
at least).
I now have several Word docs open, about 20 Chrome browser tabs, some pdfs,
Debian and Lyx all running happily in 4Gb RAM and with a 32Gb disk - amazing!

The more challenging steps now will be replicating my custom Lyx environment
under Linux (all those weird path names!), and gaining access to all my
OneDrive disks (I've found a Linux utility called rclone, but it doesn't seem
to like my multiple OneDrive setup). Again any previous experience/hints/tips
would be most welcome.

My congratulations to all the team who have obviously kept the product lean and
mean - I did not have high expectation of getting it working well on a
Chromebook, but I was wrong!
Best wishes
Paul

Yes, garbage. there's no LyX app.

Qt does exist for Android, so it might be possible to compile LyX for Android.
It would probably take some adjustments here and there. There's some info here:

but it may be a bit out of date.

Lyx on Chromebook

2021-04-15 Thread Dr Paul Verschueren
I'm just evaluating a friend's Chromebook - and I'm very impressed. It seems to
do everything I want, at a fraction of the weight and cost of my old dying
laptop ... with one exception - Lyx!
This link: https://www.bestchromebookapps.com/lyx-for-chromebook/ promises Lyx
is available as an app. This is presumably just nonsense?

An offering called Rollapp promises to give me Lyx in the cloud which is fine
in principle, but costs money.

Finally this link hints that it should be possible to get Lyx working via the
Linux support under Chrome OS:
https://www.reddit.com/r/chromeos/comments/6lwrhz/lyx_on_samsung_plus_pro_over_crouton/

I might have a go at the last of these, but wanted to reach out first to find
out if anyone has already tried this and has any tips (eg it doesn't work!) ?
The most obvious problem is space - the Chromebook has about 12Gb of available
storage (less than the RAM on my old laptop!), so some careful disk management
may be required.
Many thanks for any help/tips/comments.
Paul

Problem saving documents in Dropbox

2019-04-13 Thread Dr Paul Verschueren
Dear all -
Using LyX Version 2.3.2-1 (14 December 2018) under Win10, I am experiencing the
problem described below with seemingly greater regularity.
I'm guessing the atomicity of the Lyx save/rename operation is being broken by
a locking operation by Dropbox.
Does anyone know more?

The problem is intermittent and takes the form of a write failure on saving:
[cid:image001.png@01D4374F.61710D50]

When I press OK, I get:
[cid:image002.png@01D4374F.61710D50]

On pressing Retry, the document is saved.

Since it takes only a couple of clicks to complete the save operation, I have
been living with this for a while, but it is getting irritating especially as
the frequency appears to be increasing. Any suggestions (other than don't use
Dropbox!) gratefully received.

Paul

This problem should be solved in LyX 2.3.3. There are still performance
problems to look at[*], but this should fix the regression.

JMarc

[*] basically, I made a function faster, but it should also be called it less
often. The two sides of optimization...

Yes I get the same problem with David's test file (i7 laptop, LyX Version
2.3.2-1, up to date Win10).
I had noticed some sluggishness previously when the number of equations builds
up, but not enough to make it worth raising as an issue.
However this test file is solid equations, and shows up the problem nicely -
well done David!

No, it should not. I doubt they are really usable as screen fonts, actually

Thank you for the document, I will try it out when I find the time (my main
machine is linux).
Please keep it on your dropbox for now.

Does it make a difference if the rest of the document is text instead of math?
