Mystery solved. Lyx does not use the QT5 libraries, it needs QT4 (with qt4-devel). If I may take the liberty of suggesting a minor improvement to the configuration script, I would say that a message mentioning the need of the qt4 library would be advisable. Compilation problem
Dear Experts, I am trying to compile LyX on my xubuntu 17.04 system (for several reasons I do not want to install via apt-get install). I cannot make sense of this problem: checking for Qt library name... failed configure: error: cannot compile a simple Qt executable. Check you have the right $QTDIR. I tried with export QTDIR=/usr/share/qt5 but to no success. Another problem (may be related?) is checking for ANSI C header files... no I have build-essential correctly installed, so I cannot understand what I'm missing. Personally, I prefer using LaTeX directly. I use Biblatex with LaTeX and I was making some experiments with LyX to see what I can suggest to my students. I followed the instructions given on http://wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/Biblatex and it's all right on my xubuntu 13.04 Linux box, provided you accept some problems with the 'verbose' styles. I tried the same files on Windows and (despite putting the bib file on the regular biblio directories, in this case the 'base' folder) I can't obtain a PDF with the citations in order. I am puzzled because I exported the file as a TEX file, run biber, but even there I could not get the desired result. I am not familiar with Windows, I'm afraid, but I'm sure that it is simply a PATH problem. I also tried to use the current directory asinput folder for the BIB file, but I could not deal with the '/' or '\' problem. I read some threads about this but could not solve the issue. I tried: * C:\soandso\soandso\file.bib did not work because it was interpreted as a command * C:\soandso\soandso\file.bib no success either * C:/soandso/soandso/file.bib did not find the file If a minimal file can be useful I'll upload it. Quick suggestion. It is what I do all the time, with good results: (1) export as latex (2) put in a separate directoy all the stuff you need (latex file and bibtex files). (3) install tex4ht http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~gurari/TeX4ht/mn.html (4) install open office if you don't have already (5) run tex4ht with a script to obtain an OpenOffice file (oolatex) (6) from Open office, save as doc or rtf. I have not yet upgraded to the latest version, but as far as I know LyX does
not yet support Unicode (if so, there would be no problem). Personally,
whenever I need a large amount of Greek text I write LaTeX code directly
using gvim. If you are interested in an example, mail me privately and I'll
send you a minimal file.
For short texts, add this in your preamble in LyX:
\usepackage[greek,german]{babel} -- or other languages
\languageattribute{greek}{polutoniko} -- here is the attribute
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}
This is copied from a message posted by Matej Cepl (1/10/2003). You won't see
Greek as you type but the DVI should be perfect. Good for short quotations.

If they are simple, I follow a simple routine: a) I use KWord under Linux to open the doc-file b) I export from Kword as .tex file c) I check if the LaTeX file will run in TeX d) I start LyX and import the LaTeX file This is good, but I also reccomend -- for free -- the excellent program Writer2LaTeX: http://www.hj-gym.dk/~hj/writer2latex/ You need Open Office for that. An advantage is that it works both under Linux and under windows. So: (1) Open the Word file with Open Office; (2) Save as LaTeX. That's all. It works normally like a charm. I tried to install Ruurd Reitsma's LyX for Win32. The extractor starts but suddenly complain it is not able to find the first additional fine (the one with extension r00) that is in fact present in the temporary directory as well as the main exe file. Is this a knows problem? The installation program hangs and I found no way to persuade it to go any further. I followed the recent debate about lyx and Greek. I use a lot of ancient Greek quotations: although I cannot see Greek while editing, I am satisfied with the excellent DVI output. I have been requested to send a PDF file: in these cases, when I have no Greek, I use one of the PS packages available (palatino, etc.). However I noticed that Greek is still bitmapped and so in the PDF output with acrobat Greek looks horrible. Can you please tell me if there are any PS fonts I could download and install to see nice Greek in this kind of files? Since I found no gzipped-tarred file, I wrongly downloaded just the *.c file and not the *.h ones... now it's all OK with a simple 'make'.
