So it will be a bit faster, but not that much.

Hi,

I tried to report a bug after 5 years of having used your bug tracker
for the last time and I found that:

- I cannot login with my old saved password (that's probably on me)

- From the reset password form, I don't get any reset password email
(I've tried many times and there is no email in my Spam folder either)

- I cannot register, the link sends me to a page that shows "No
handler matched request to /register"

Hi Carlos,

Our bug tracker is in end-of-life support (old OS, old tracker) and we
had to disable account creation to avoid spam.

The good news is that we should have a brand new version on a brand new
server (same basic appearance, though) next week.

So I'm reporting the bug here. The tab bar in macOS is not rendering
fine, as shown in the attached screenshot. This is for LyX 2.3.7 and
macOS Sonoma. OTOH LyX 2.4.0 correctly renders a flat tab bar (IMO
better looking).

This does not look good indeed. I encourage you to create a bug report
when this becomes possible again so that the issue does not get
forgotten (I cannot investigate this myself, not on macOS).

Emiliano's remark about version management, from 2017, seems out of
date. I use git with LyX all the time. It was extremely helpful when I
was making the final changes to a book recently. It allowed me to check
and make sure that the only changes I'd made were the ones I thought I'd
made. The real issue there, it seems to me, is that most such tools are
line based, so changing a single character here and there can lead to
the changes looking more significant than they are. But that's true with
LaTeX, too, to some extent. It's a bigger problem with LyX, because the
line breaks in the saved version of the file can be completely different
from that point on in the paragraph.

Note that, starting with 2.4, the .lyx files break text at punctuation,
which should play better with git. NewInLyX24 says:

* LyX now uses "semantic linefeeds" for text in LyX files. This allows
to have better diffs for documents stored in version-control systems.

I am not sure whether the issue is the form of LyX or some program on
your machine that interferes with LyX. Did you try running with activity
monitor to see whether another process eats CPU cycles at the time where
LyX is sluggish?

Otherwise, to diagnose this you would need to
1/ get a binary with debug information from stephan (I do not know how
easy it is for him)

2/ install xcode (I do not know how easy it is for you)
3/ run LyX together with the profiler "Instruments"
4/ send the output back to the list.

Another solution is to export your file(s) to an ancient LyX format and
use this ancient version that is presumably faster, if this is your wish.

The paragraph doesn’t have to be very long (e.g. a few sentences) for

Hi Tim,

It would be bad to see you abandon LyX...

My difficulty to help you here is that I do not have access to a macOS

You could try, in Document Settings>Local Layout, something like

Style Paragraph

If I am not mistaken, this will not override the value in your document,

The syntax is related to our parsing code, and our parsing code is not

Or rather in a different run. You say that LyX is frozen, does this mean
that you have to abort it yourself?

Another possibility is to run LyX under a tool like valgrind (which
detects memory errors before they cause crashes).

Someone has to open a bug on launchpad asking for a backport of 2.3.7 on

The newer version takes about 50% more space than the older version.  Is
there any way I can make the newer version more condensed so that it
takes less space, while still showing the same toolbars?  (Changing the
icon sizes to "small" makes minimal difference as the gaps between the

I suspect that the difference is the theme that Ubuntu and CentOS7 use.
Normally, Qt (and thus LyX) respect this.

Probably I misunderstand, but that seems to be no particular issue.
Isn't it the same with, e.g., font-sizes of headings? If I see it
correctly, the current way to take care of that is to provide the LaTeX
layout already in the work area, e.g. setting the headings to the
appropriate font-size. No extra setting needed. Just the layout has to
provide the right WYSIWYM style in order to work correctly. Or why would
colors be different?

Indeed, this is not special to colors and this is what we have already.

We would need two different settings then: one to tell what the LaTeX

their own idea on how customization shall be done).

Dear all,

Can you reproduce this bug on your system?

   https://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/12435

It's helpful to know the type of systems on which it can be reproduced.
Specifically, it will be helpful to figure out whether the bug only surfaces
on certain operating systems, and only with certain configurations.

Here is the recipe to reproduce the bug:

   1. Maximize (non-fullscreen) the window
   2. Enter Full screen mode
   3. Exit Full screen.

After step 3, does the LyX window return to the state after step (1)?
i.e., is the window maximized?

If you try to reproduce it, please state:

1. Can you reproduce the bug?
2. Your operating system and version number (version number is
especially helpful for macOS users).
3. Copy/paste the info from Help > About.

Here's my own responses to the 3 questions:

1. No. (the window is correctly restored as maximized after 3 for me).
2. Ubuntu 22.04.
3. Pasted info is below:

Version 2.4.0dev

(Sunday, December 4, 2022)

Built from git commit hash abd69b06

Qt Version (run-time): 5.15.3 on platform xcb
Qt Version (compile-time): 5.15.3
Python detected: python3 -tt

Hi—

I do not know how to use LyX “bug reporting” and hope you can help me.

I have been unsuccessful in getting LyX 2.3.6.2 to work on my MacBookPro
running OS 12.6.

I downloaded your DMG file many time thinking that perhaps there was a
transmission error. But nothing works. Even tried a mirror.

Here is a partial list of problem that I have encountered:

Hi again,

I did see several issues related to reconfiguring LyX in recent weeks
that were related to the lack of a proper python installation on recent
macOS versions.

A quick search on our bug tracker shows these reports that might be
relevant:

https://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/12523
https://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/11895
https://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/12150

But again, I am not a macOS user, so you can probably get a better from
a member of this list.

Regards,
JMarc

(1) When opening LyX, the word LyX appears briefly on the Menu Bar and
then disappears completely. The main LyX window never opens.

(2) Sometimes I get a message about needing to Reconfigure LyX. When I
try to do so, I get a message that it failed.

(3) Sometimes I get a message that the cite engine is missing.

(4) The file LyX-2.3 located in /Library/Application Support/ contains
ONLY an empty cache file.

(5) Once-- do not recall exactly what I was doing at the time-- I got a
message that said something like, “You have encountered a bug in LyX.”

I have spent at least 4 or 5 hours trying various alternatives in hopes
of getting LyX to work. None have been successful.

Will you please let me know by Reply email what I should do now?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Ed

Float

GuiName               MarginFigure
NumberWithin          figure  # <
RefPrefix             fig
more commands etc.
End

The document class is book, and inside chapter 1, as you can see in the
attached image, I inserted a regular figure, followed by a margin
figure. The margin figure counter in the editor is 1.1.1, since it is in
chapter one, and it inherited the first number inside the figure counter.

I want the margin figure to have the label 1.2 (which logically makes
more sense if you treat figure and marginfigure on an equal footing).

What amendments should I make to the Style to get it changed the way I want?

There are many things that are possible with a bug tracker and not

The new delivery model will shift from delivering software through a

Can you please confirm that your license terms and conditions will allow

In your module, each of your theorems can be associated to its own

possible to specify with DependsOn that a style needs the preamble of
another one.

With this, you could make sure that only the required code gets included.

The LyX format itself changes regularly during the 2.4.0dev timeline.

When 2.4.0 is released, the format will be fixed and lyx2lyx (barring

The only exception is that the last 2.4 version will get an updated

Likewise, LyX 2.3.7 will be able to read and produce the 2.4.0 format.

[Important] New behavior for spam handling on this list

2022-04-06 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes via lyx-users

Dear all,

Until now, the handling of the list was like: messages from subscribers
go through, other messages get discarded.

There is actually a way to filter e-mails marked as spam, and I have
already changed all our other lists to take advantage of this information.

Today it is lyx-users' turn. The new behavior is:
* spams are automatically discarded; please notify the list if a message
of yours just disappears. It seems to work correctly on the other lists
that we have;

* members posts not qualified as spam go through as usual;
* remaining non-member posts are held for moderation.

The big advantage is that now non-subscribers will be able to post
messages (with a low amount of manual moderation from my side).

Comments welcome.

Not sure what the problems are there but, for the record, I use the LyX 2.3.6.2

Hints:
 * hotkeys are somewhat different since one uses the Command key

 * cursor movement is slightly different to match what is expected on a

 * indeed to change the background (instead of the OS one), uncheck

or two others, in which case it might be best not to propose this
feature on lyx-devel and just take the easy approach of writing the
Python script. Nonetheless I thought I would ask for feedback since
branches are such a flexible tool I'm not sure how others use them.

While I am not sure I would use it, it is pretty easy to implement in
the updateBuffer machinery. I can give guidance if needed.

Wolfgang, could you share the document that causes issues (at least
privately)?

The assertion above (I ignore the QXcbConnection stuff for now) means
that stack::pop() is called on a stack which is already empty (this
methods removes one object from a stack).

In our code, there are two places where such a stack is used:
output_latex.cpp (LaTeX output) and output_xhtml.cpp (HTML output).

Since your document is exported to late for LuaLaTeX, it has to be the
former.

The place where this pop() method is used (popLanguageName) is related
to our use of nested languages. And indeed, it does not check that some
language has been saved before pop-ing it.

At this point, having a document that triggers the issue would be very
useful. Then I am sure that Jürgen or Enrico will be able to take over.

Yes probably.

What should I do?

From the build directory (tip: you can run LyX from there without
installing):

1/ make sure that you have pulled the latest changes from git and built them
2/ run "gdb src/lyx"
3/ when you see the "(gdb)" prompt, type the following commands
catch throw
run
[do the crashing thing]
bt
4/ send the output of the bt command

f you have issues with thunderbird, try to close it before debugging.

p.s. if I compile lyx again, should I use
./configure --enable-debug
since I am not familiar with gdb?

Usually this type of discussion are more appropriate in lyx-devel mailing
list.

Indeed. But encouraging users to use latest version is good.

But I am not sure that this particular instance is encouraging :)

With that said if you use --enable-debug use also --enable-stdlib-debug that
it will help as well.

These are on by default with development builds.

I'd says the important stuff is in "~/.lyx". The conf thing is the
session settings (window size...), which may be useful but may also not.

The part that makes life difficult is the different packages installed
on the two Linux installation, especially since LyX adapts to whatever

If you transfer the .lyx directory, do not forget to run

mail client no longer shows who the sender was. (The sender's name and
address are in the "Reply to" field.) In contrast, the developer list
continues to behave itself, with the sender's name in the From field and
"LyX Developers" in the To field.

I am not sure if I would qualify this as a gremlin, but one of the
people from OSUOSL.org (which gracefully hosts these lists and our
server) did tweak this mailing list.

Why did such a thing happen?

Well, every time our friend Valdemaras (aka sov...@yahoo.com) posted a
message on the list, I got a bounce from every subscriber to this list
who use a yahoo-based ISP (that's 40 people who did not get the
message). This with an error message about spam and DMARC that I am not
sure to understand. As I do not understand why Valdemaras is our only
user who freaks out yahoo.

So we can try to tweak again and better the list, but no promises. And
if there is a specialist of mailman reading this, hints will be welcome.

In my view the problem is the acronym itself. I see it used directly and

No this is very good.

scrolled a bit, if I remember properly.
Full are all graph, flame_1 is TextMetrics selected from first hugenote
scrolling and flame_2 is from last scrolling in hugenote, selected
lyx::frontend.

So, here is what I see (and do not see):

In flame_2, a lot of time is spent to draw the misspelling marks.
Indeed, for that it is necessary to find the position for beginning and
end of each misspelt word. What happens if you turn off on-screen spell
checking?

In flame_1, I do not see much, except maybe the fact that a lot of time
is spent acessing the cache (the part with QCache and QHash) of already
computing rows. This can be good (already is already computed) or bad
(the cache access are very slow), depending on the importance of this
part of code in the whole picture.

In full.svg, I do not see the time spent painting the screen (what is in
flame_2), so I cannot compare it to the time spend computing the
position of each element (basically the redoParagraph stuff). It would
be good to understand what is too slow.

Finally, could you check whether LyX is the only thing using cpu time?
What about the X server, for example?
