faster scroll, the higher CPU usage, but document moves very slowly and with
quite a big delay and with big jumps. wayland can be the culprit. I opened lyx
in xwayland mode and I can scroll through the note only slowly – after
scrolling fast document are thrown back to initial position. CPU usage about
70%. In wayland – 99% if scrolling is intensive, up and down.

I can confirm the issue with Wayland. I unfortunately did not find easy
way to mitigate the issue. I have idea for a proper fix, but it is a lot
of work. I have been successful at procrastinating on that because
nobody complained. Now that I have a real use case, I will have to do
something about it ;)

The difficulty that we have is that, if we only compute metrics for the
text visible on screen, we do not know what the width of the inset is
(think a tall table for example). So either we can make the metrics
process fast enough (which remains to be seen) or we have to find clever
ways to typeset only parts of the inset.

Hello.

Lyx is approaching 2.4 and I want to draw attention of devs to the outline pane
functionality and problem of the huge notes. Maybe some of these issues can be
fixed relatively easy and quickly till the new release.

These issues probably deserve their own tickets on trac (either grouped
or separated). Concerning the performace issue, it is a known problem
which is generally not as bad, but it will be difficult to fix before
2.4.0 IMO. I would appreciate to have a file to play with (you may want
to use buffer-anonymize on it).

JMarc

1. "Keep" tikbox in the outline pane is working inconsistently. Let's say, I opened all
navigation tree elements by sliding bottom slider of the outline pane to the right and ticked
"keep". It's keeping tree while I am navigating through the document, but after going to
another document and coming back I see collapsed tree (ticbox is still ticked). This situation is
particularly discomfortable when working with master-child documents.

2. Navigation tree in the outline pane collapses after ctrl+z (undoing) while
"keep" is still ticked.

3. Situation with notes and footnotes selection in outline. I am using Lyx notes, greyedout and
comments severely while preparing texts. And it is very common situation when I want to go through
all or some notes to correct text, delete notes. So I open notes list in the outline, search note I
need, go to text to correct it and... all notes disapper in the outline and I see navigation tree
there. So I must open notes list anew, select next note and so on. Ticking "keep" tikbox
do nothing. Maybe such behaviour is intentional (to search only one note and automatically go back
to navigation tree), but maybe "tickbox" can be used to keep notes list?

4. This isn't related to outline pane. My notes can be huge (to hide parts of
the text temporary) and navigating in such huge notes is painfully slow, CPU
usage rises dramatically (99% of one of the cores of the CPU). Such slowness
presents only when huge note is opened and is visible in Lyx work area.
Slowness disappears after collapsing note or after scrolling till it disappears
from work area. The same problem is with big branches. Such slow was note with
75 000 characters (incl. spaces), more smaller notes and a lot of citations in
it.

Such situation is with master (bit dated – Built from git commit hash 9e1db659)
and with stable too, as I remember.

Thank you for your hard work – it is much more pleasant to work with Lyx office
than with traditional offices.

Now with LyX 2.3.5.2 there is the same problem with QT5-5.12.7 and again

Unfortunately, it is not my failing memory that prevented from fixing

Even if it does, I suspect it will not be enough for a long-term fix.

Did I understand correctly that you can compile LyX? Does it mean that
you can try a patch too? A possibility is that Qt does not like (ass
Pavel noted) to have a font with a character at position 1 (which is
where \int lives in esint10 font). We would have to duplicate the
character somewhere else in the font.

is not going to be installed

Liviu, do you know how to solve this for the PPA?

I did notice this issue with the build, but wasn't sure how to
approach it. It's not exactly clear to me why Ubuntu Focal would have
difficulties installing 'libboost-signals1.67-dev' on a fresh image. I
would need to test a few things just to understand why this is
happening.

I see this in boost 1/69 release notes:
Signals (v1) is now removed. Its removal was announced in 1.68 and its
deprecation was announced in 1.54. Boost 1.68 is the last release that
provides this library. Users are encouraged to use Signals2 instead. The
Boost community thanks Douglas Gregor for his work on Signals which
served its users well and which also inspired Signals2.

Actually, we have switched to Boost.Signals2 some time ago (in 2.3
already), so that we do not need boost-signals-dev anymore. I would try
with libboost-dev only as dependency.

This thread, suggested by Daniel Clement, is, in fact, a splitting off
of a previous track (no accents with dead keys); there it was concluded
that, at least,  qt5 5.14 has a bug and that 5.11 has not. The bug was
that the dead keys are really dead.
As a working workaround I tried writing in a non qt application, nedit
in my case, and do a copy paste with the mouse in lyx. It worked, all
the accents and c cedille appear but the new lines disappear. If I made
Insert -> File -> Plain Text the accentuated characters got an icon,
meaning I don't know this, but the new lines remained. Same behaviour if
I import the text.
Therefore the object of this thread: is it possible, with some setting,
to have the best of both worlds?

Try maybe Edit>Paste Special>Plain Text.

It is not expected because nobody expected using LyX for hieroglyphs :)

However, I notice this there are in the 32bit plane. LyX uses internally

It might also be that the bug is on Qt side.

Yes, using xetex changes the code preview to usage of unicode. Is it on
purpse one cannot useb pdflatex that way?

It is a matter of using polyglossia instead of babel, from what I
understand. There some things (ligatures, spacing) that are handled with
these improves engines, but not the plain pdflatex with babel.

1. If I typeset the document I sent before first with pdflatex and then
with xetex I get an error:

  \babel@aux{english}{}

This is the switch from polyglossia to babel and the fact that we keep
old aux files to limit the number of TeX runs.

2. With xetexThe plain quotation marks show as Mapping=34 in the bookmarks.

What bookmarks are you talking about?

I am not sure it is easy, unless layout2layout adds comments like what

I think it would be very complicated to get right, unless we manage to
automatize it.

As far as I remember, parselog is used for converters which return
errors with line numbers (chktex or literate programming) this
transforms these logs in a form that LyX can read).

In your case the best bet is to read the Message Pane. Aren't there

How do I make the Icon Size small as a default, which I usually do with
Right-Click into a Toolbar?

I see in the code that if you have an icon named "iconsize.png", then
its size will be used as 'normal" size. But we do not try to query the

Not permanent, but this will work:
  lyx -x "icon-size small"

A more long-term solution, since we have so-called "commands" that can
contin a list og things to run, would be to say that some special
commands like "on-startup" or "on-newfile" would be run autotomatically
on these events if they exist.

Would that solve your issue?

However, the problem you are seeing shows that configuration of toolbars
is a mess currently. Different settings are in different places for no
real reason IMO.

Finally, I wonder whether we try to inherit the icon size from the OS...

Format 66

Style Description
     LabelFont

You can even stick your renewcommand in there, like:

the journal then I will have to either revert to the original format or convert
to a third format for another journal. I have a version control problem across
formats if I make further edits to any version in any format. Besides tediously
manually editing all versions, making the same changes, is there any way to
keep a master document and spawn one or more alternately-formatted versions
with the same content, thus saving the headache of manually editing each
version?

I know that LyX has a version control capacity but I have never used it and I
suspect it is not appropriate for this scenario.

One solution is to have a child document containing the paper itself and
different masters depending on the output you want. I do that for
courses I give to have both (foilTeX) slides and a two-column handout

Do you still experience this painful situation?

What I see from the log is that :
1/ the spellchecker is launched (#53-#56)
2/ it sets selection and triggers explicitly an update (#52-#53)
3/ this eventually triggers the computation of metrics for a graphics
4/ the graphics is loaded (so presumably it was not yet the case)
5/ this in turn causes a call to an external unzip program (#41-#40)
6/ the mechanism to show progress (wheel and timing) triggers (#32-#30)
7/ it updates the statusbar [#30-#26)
8/ this leads to a repaint of something (#25)
9/ the backing store (the thing on which we actually paint) of some
widget tries to synchronize itself (#16-#14)

10/ it leads to a full repaint of our workarea (why, I am not sure) (#4]
11/ this eventually crashes, presumably because the backing store is not
ready yet to receive things to paint. (#11-#10)

After wrtigin all this, that does not really help yet (except that we
could probably avoid 2/ and maybe forbid updates around 7/).

But now I notice that the warnings show first:
QBackingStore::endPaint() called with active painter on backingstore
paint device

are bugs in particular Qt versions. See e.g.
  https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-66452

So, first question: what is your Qt version?

Let's cut to the core of the issue : we have presumably many Windows
users, but no developer who principally uses windows. We know about the
problem and are trying to attract some (Jürgen WS, are you readning this ;).

Besides this, I would say that this days the team is composed of 10
people, who have a variable amount of time to spend for LyX; We can add
to that 2 or 3 non programmers really committed to help (and who do help).

So, while we do have automated testing to check that code compiles, that
document import/export works in as many situations as possible, while we
do run our code though static analysis code to detect bugs, there are
holes in the racket.

One of this holes is being able to help users when some particular
situation makes his/her box behave differently from others. And, yes, on
this front we are pretty much in reactive mode. This is all we can afford.

That's understandable.  Something they might do say if the followed my
"Schorched Earth" instructions on a Win 10 box with latest updates.  Or
if they were performing test cases as Win 10 and MikTeX updates rolled
out.  Likely people do not believe me as my street cred on the internet
super highway is below some threshold as determined by some AI deep
inside the bowels of AWS.

It did not cross my mind that people do not believe you. The issue is
more that your system does not work like other systems work, and we need
to see what is the point that is different. The fact that you see this
issue on many different systems where you install suggest to
possibilities to me:
1/ there is something special at you site (network drives, weird
proxies, whatever) that lead to the issue

2/ you install in a creative way that does not work

Either way, we have to determine what the actual problem is in order to
fix it.

I do not know, do you have a particular setup? This stuff has been

the LANGUAGE variable. Finally, it will fall back to English.

I realize now that it could try the current OS language too (which is
contained in LANGUAGES in Linux, but not necessarily elsewhere), but I
do not know in which order.

Will this help?

Didn't know about this one !

If someone has done this, do you have any tips?  If not, is there any
interest in me making a pull request against Spack to make the package
publicly available?

Sure, if you manage to build it, please do.

I'm not so sure about that. Should we see italics on the screen even without
having them installed as a part of the font series?

To be frank, I do not know...

Same problem here with LyX 2.3.2 and Linux (openSUSE Leap 15.0).

I see. That was just an oversimplification on my side. Attached is a
variant. If I understand you correctly your solution cannot be used for it.

Currently, itemize and enumerate are handled in a hard-coded way. It is
thus not possible to add a new layout that acts like that. However, it
would be possible to generalize enumerate/itemize support to get rid of
any hard-coding (in theory at least).

Your own enumerate layout is not supposed to do that.

Hi,

In the attached document the list structure in the work area is shown as

 1. Enumerate

Try the one attached. I changed LabelType to Static and set the format
(because otherwise labeltype was reset to Itemize). Does it do what you
want?

This problem should be solved in LyX 2.3.3. There are still performance

Not everyone needs to generate output from LyX.I find the app excellent for
taking notes and the .lyx files are sufficient for that purpose.

A relaxed editing mode would make LyX even more convenient to use for taking
notes. In particular, it’s annoying to have empty constructs automatically
deleted when you move the cursor away from them.

Any chance a relaxed editing mode could be added to LyX?

This is something that can be added to each layout using a local layout like

Style Standard
  KeepEmpty 1
End

This will only have effect on the standard style, though. The same has
to be done for the styles you care about.

Another solution is to insert something invisible like an unbreakable
space (Ctrl-Space) in things you want to keep empty.
