Dear LyX Team,

We are writing to you in relation to the licensing for LyX.

The University of Melbourne is currently working to modernize its
approach to delivering computer labs across the campus and will be
transitioning from physical computer lab delivery into a virtual
platform based on Citrix technology.

The new delivery model will shift from delivering software through a
single physical Windows 10 endpoint to a shared virtual model using
servers running Windows Server 2019, allowing multiple users to connect
to one server using user sessions.

As part of this transition, we wish to clarify with you the licensing
terms and conditions for LyX to ensure we will remain complaint with our
commitments.

Can you please confirm that your license terms and conditions will allow
the University to deliver LyX using this new model? Otherwise, if this
does not comply with your current terms, can you please advise what
changes are required to allow us to deliver LyX

Hello,

Our license is available here is the GPL2, as specified here:
https://git.lyx.org/?p=lyx.git;a=blob;f=COPYING

Please ask on lyx-de...@lists.lyx.org if you have further questions.

To this bunch of tex commands there is also a corresponding LyX module

in the customization manual).

I want to avoid this 80 lines code block in my document preamble. It
clutters the document structure.

In your module, each of your theorems can be associated to its own
preamble, that will only be incorporated when needed. It is also
possible to specify with DependsOn that a style needs the preamble of
another one.

With this, you could make sure that only the required code gets included.

The LyX format itself changes regularly during the 2.4.0dev timeline.
lyx2lyx is updated simultaneously.

When 2.4.0 is released, the format will be fixed and lyx2lyx (barring
bugs) will stay the same during the lifetime of the branch.
The only exception is that the last 2.4 version will get an updated
lyx2lyx that can read the 2.5 format.

Likewise, LyX 2.3.7 will be able to read and produce the 2.4.0 format.

I suggest that we wait until this actually happens :) I understand your

What I really wanted was to apply the anti-spam filter only to
non-subscriber, but mailman does not allow for that as I understand it.

And what's the supposed upside? So non-subscribers can post. Look at
any netiquette guide and they'll roundly catcall the clowns who begin
or end their message with "please CC me because I'm not on the list."

The upside is to try to be more welcoming to new users. It is not like
we have too many users, do we? As in my answer above, I agree that we

[Important] New behavior for spam handling on this list

2022-04-06 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes via lyx-users

Dear all,

Until now, the handling of the list was like: messages from subscribers
go through, other messages get discarded.

There is actually a way to filter e-mails marked as spam, and I have
already changed all our other lists to take advantage of this information.

Today it is lyx-users' turn. The new behavior is:
* spams are automatically discarded; please notify the list if a message
of yours just disappears. It seems to work correctly on the other lists
that we have;

* members posts not qualified as spam go through as usual;
* remaining non-member posts are held for moderation.

The big advantage is that now non-subscribers will be able to post
messages (with a low amount of manual moderation from my side).

Comments welcome.

Not sure what the problems are there but, for the record, I use the LyX 2.3.6.2
binaries from lyx.org on both my MacBook Pro (M1 chip) and a Windows laptop and
the functionality is pretty much identical. It does appear that you are stuck
with a blinking cursor (since that’s an OS level thing), but I have no problem
changing the background color (did you uncheck “Use system colors”?), and
cursor movement keys and other shortcuts work identically in both versions.
(Maybe you mean something more by “hotkeys”?)

Hints:
 * hotkeys are somewhat different since one uses the Command key
instead of Ctrl at least
 * cursor movement is slightly different to match what is expected on a
mac, but this is controllable through "Preferences>Editing>Use mac-style
cursor movement".
 * indeed to change the background (instead of the OS one), uncheck
"Use System colors".

For example, one could sort the branches by clicking on the column

Would others find this useful? I'm guessing it's just me and maybe one

feature on lyx-devel and just take the easy approach of writing the

branches are such a flexible tool I'm not sure how others use them.

While I am not sure I would use it, it is pretty easy to implement in

Wolfgang, could you share the document that causes issues (at least
privately)?

The assertion above (I ignore the QXcbConnection stuff for now) means
that stack::pop() is called on a stack which is already empty (this
methods removes one object from a stack).

In our code, there are two places where such a stack is used:
output_latex.cpp (LaTeX output) and output_xhtml.cpp (HTML output).

Since your document is exported to late for LuaLaTeX, it has to be the
former.

The place where this pop() method is used (popLanguageName) is related
to our use of nested languages. And indeed, it does not check that some
language has been saved before pop-ing it.

At this point, having a document that triggers the issue would be very
useful. Then I am sure that Jürgen or Enrico will be able to take over.

Yes probably.

What should I do?

From the build directory (tip: you can run LyX from there without
installing):

1/ make sure that you have pulled the latest changes from git and built them
2/ run "gdb src/lyx"
3/ when you see the "(gdb)" prompt, type the following commands
catch throw
run
[do the crashing thing]
bt
4/ send the output of the bt command

f you have issues with thunderbird, try to close it before debugging.

p.s. if I compile lyx again, should I use
./configure --enable-debug
since I am not familiar with gdb?

Usually this type of discussion are more appropriate in lyx-devel mailing
list.

Indeed. But encouraging users to use latest version is good.

But I am not sure that this particular instance is encouraging :)

With that said if you use --enable-debug use also --enable-stdlib-debug that
it will help as well.

These are on by default with development builds.

I am not sure if I would qualify this as a gremlin, but one of the

Why did such a thing happen?

Well, every time our friend Valdemaras (aka sov...@yahoo.com) posted a

who use a yahoo-based ISP (that's 40 people who did not get the
message). This with an error message about spam and DMARC that I am not
sure to understand. As I do not understand why Valdemaras is our only

So we can try to tweak again and better the list, but no promises. And

Here on the LyX list we use the word MWE to mean the simplest example
that still exhibits the symptom. But MWE stands for Minimum *Working*

"work". Also, I think I've seen MWE used on various LaTeX venues to
mean the smallest file that works, for a specific feature you want to
incorporate.

In my view the problem is the acronym itself. I see it used directly and
it is unlikely that a poor lost LyX user will know what it means. I find
this jargon intimidating.

No this is very good.

I opended Lyx, hugenote document, scrolled one huge inset up and down, cliced
to other tab and scrolled usual document, after returned to hugenote and
scrolled a bit, if I remember properly.
Full are all graph, flame_1 is TextMetrics selected from first hugenote
scrolling and flame_2 is from last scrolling in hugenote, selected
lyx::frontend.

So, here is what I see (and do not see):

In flame_2, a lot of time is spent to draw the misspelling marks.
Indeed, for that it is necessary to find the position for beginning and
end of each misspelt word. What happens if you turn off on-screen spell
checking?

In flame_1, I do not see much, except maybe the fact that a lot of time
is spent acessing the cache (the part with QCache and QHash) of already
computing rows. This can be good (already is already computed) or bad
(the cache access are very slow), depending on the importance of this
part of code in the whole picture.

In full.svg, I do not see the time spent painting the screen (what is in
flame_2), so I cannot compare it to the time spend computing the
position of each element (basically the redoParagraph stuff). It would
be good to understand what is too slow.

Finally, could you check whether LyX is the only thing using cpu time?
What about the X server, for example?

stalled. I compiled breakrows branch with --enable-build-type=prof and huge
notes are usable. Performance is much better than it was in master. There is
some, how to say, jerking, lagging when scrolling, scrolling isn't smooth,
there is a lag, but I can scroll insets almost freely. This is huge progress.
Maybe master waits it :).

Good to know, I will propose it. I was waiting for good reasons :)

I can help with testing (not this week though). I don't know anything about
profiler, but installed Hotspot, launched lyxgit (that is my prefix of master
Lyx) with default parameters. Now I have 56 MiB perf.data file. Versions of
packages are there, I think (except those from Arch linux Aur), if you need
that information:
https://lists.manjaro.org/pipermail/manjaro-packages/Week-of-Mon-20211011/042684.html
There is parser errors like "Module "libQt5Gui.so.5.15.2" is missing 1587 of 2089
debug symbols." and so on. So I can send perf.data file to you.

The problem is that, besides the versions, the precise layout of the
binaries may differ. Therefore, I would have to clone your OS in a VM to
be able to read the perf.data file.

Recent unreleased version of hotspot allow to save a portable file, but
I could not get it to work in my trials. They are available here:

https://github.com/KDAB/hotspot/releases

Otherwise, we could try to run "perf cord" and create a report by hand.

Branch inset with several opened huge notes in it is performing extremely bad. I can barely use mouse or touchpad to scroll – it stalls and scrolls after quite a long time with CPU usage rising drastically. 70%. In wayland – 99% if scrolling is intensive, up and down.

I can confirm the issue with Wayland. I unfortunately did not find easy

of work. I have been successful at procrastinating on that because
nobody complained. Now that I have a real use case, I will have to do
something about it ;)

The difficulty that we have is that, if we only compute metrics for the
text visible on screen, we do not know what the width of the inset is

Regarding huge note. I created a new file, pasted some random generated text in
English and Russian, placed them in note an yes, it is not as bad. But when I
pasted my text in Lithuanian to note, it's almost unusable. Same situation even
after converting all text to plaintext (so there is no notes or links to
missing footnotes, only text). After buffer-anonymize performance is much
better, like with notes in other languages. So, problem is with language, I
think – Lithuanian has letters ąčęėįįšųųūž. So I copied public lithuanian text
to the note. Strangely situation is better (but worse than with English or
Russian notes).
I attached file with public text and I can send file with my text privately if
you wish.

What shall I do to experience bad performance? What is your operating

Re: outline pane issues and huge note slowness

2021-02-05 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

Le 04/02/2021 à 01:15, V K a écrit :

Hello.

Lyx is approaching 2.4 and I want to draw attention of devs to the outline pane
functionality and problem of the huge notes. Maybe some of these issues can be
fixed relatively easy and quickly till the new release.

These issues probably deserve their own tickets on trac (either grouped
or separated). Concerning the performace issue, it is a known problem
which is generally not as bad, but it will be difficult to fix before
2.4.0 IMO. I would appreciate to have a file to play with (you may want
to use buffer-anonymize on it).

JMarc

1. "Keep" tikbox in the outline pane is working inconsistently. Let's say, I opened all
navigation tree elements by sliding bottom slider of the outline pane to the right and ticked
"keep". It's keeping tree while I am navigating through the document, but after going to
another document and coming back I see collapsed tree (ticbox is still ticked). This situation is
particularly discomfortable when working with master-child documents.

2. Navigation tree in the outline pane collapses after ctrl+z (undoing) while
"keep" is still ticked.

3. Situation with notes and footnotes selection in outline. I am using Lyx notes, greyedout and
comments severely while preparing texts. And it is very common situation when I want to go through
all or some notes to correct text, delete notes. So I open notes list in the outline, search note I
need, go to text to correct it and... all notes disapper in the outline and I see navigation tree
there. So I must open notes list anew, select next note and so on. Ticking "keep" tikbox
do nothing. Maybe such behaviour is intentional (to search only one note and automatically go back
to navigation tree), but maybe "tickbox" can be used to keep notes list?

4. This isn't related to outline pane. My notes can be huge (to hide parts of
the text temporary) and navigating in such huge notes is painfully slow, CPU
usage rises dramatically (99% of one of the cores of the CPU). Such slowness
presents only when huge note is opened and is visible in Lyx work area.
Slowness disappears after collapsing note or after scrolling till it disappears
from work area. The same problem is with big branches. Such slow was note with
75 000 characters (incl. spaces), more smaller notes and a lot of citations in
it.

Such situation is with master (bit dated – Built from git commit hash 9e1db659)
and with stable too, as I remember.

Thank you for your hard work – it is much more pleasant to work with Lyx office
than with traditional offices.

QT4 and this workaround was fine for me.
Now with LyX 2.3.5.2 there is the same problem with QT5-5.12.7 and again

Unfortunately, it is not my failing memory that prevented from fixing
the bug. Since I cannot reproduce it, it is difficult for me to do
something about it.

Let's start by a shot in the dark: does it make a difference to set the
environment variable QT_HARFBUZZ to "old" ?

Even if it does, I suspect it will not be enough for a long-term fix.

Did I understand correctly that you can compile LyX? Does it mean that
you can try a patch too? A possibility is that Qt does not like (ass
Pavel noted) to have a font with a character at position 1 (which is
where \int lives in esint10 font). We would have to duplicate the
character somewhere else in the font.

Yes, for Ubuntu Focal, Qt4 was removed from the Ubuntu repositories.

I did notice this issue with the build, but wasn't sure how to
approach it. It's not exactly clear to me why Ubuntu Focal would have
difficulties installing 'libboost-signals1.67-dev' on a fresh image. I
would need to test a few things just to understand why this is
happening.

I see this in boost 1/69 release notes:
Signals (v1) is now removed. Its removal was announced in 1.68 and its
deprecation was announced in 1.54. Boost 1.68 is the last release that
provides this library. Users are encouraged to use Signals2 instead. The
Boost community thanks Douglas Gregor for his work on Signals which
served its users well and which also inspired Signals2.

Actually, we have switched to Boost.Signals2 some time ago (in 2.3
already), so that we do not need boost-signals-dev anymore. I would try
with libboost-dev only as dependency.

Yes, using xetex changes the code preview to usage of unicode. Is it on
purpse one cannot useb pdflatex that way?

It is a matter of using polyglossia instead of babel, from what I
understand. There some things (ligatures, spacing) that are handled with
these improves engines, but not the plain pdflatex with babel.

1. If I typeset the document I sent before first with pdflatex and then
with xetex I get an error:

  \babel@aux{english}{}

This is the switch from polyglossia to babel and the fact that we keep
old aux files to limit the number of TeX runs.

2. With xetexThe plain quotation marks show as Mapping=34 in the bookmarks.

What bookmarks are you talking about?

You should get that if you use xetex/luatex (aka 'Use non-TeX fonts').

Okay, found the problem. I used "Require" instead "Requires" in a custom

I am not sure it is easy, unless layout2layout adds comments like what
the C preprocessor does:

#file: xxx.layout
#line: 123

I think it would be very complicated to get right, unless we manage to
automatize it.

converter and where would I find the log file? Is it just placing
“parselog” in the flag option or “parselog=TRUE” or something else?

What I am trying to resolve is why the MS Word converter:
pandoc -s --filter pandoc-citeproc --csl vancouver-superscript.csl   -f
latex -o $$o -t docx $$i
gives me a “ lyx – can not convert file” error message. Moreover, I am
able to run the script above in a windows command line (cmd.exe)
successfully.  Any help would be much appreciated.

As far as I remember, parselog is used for converters which return
errors with line numbers (chktex or literate programming) this
transforms these logs in a form that LyX can read).

In your case the best bet is to read the Message Pane. Aren't there
enough error messages there?

Not permanent, but this will work:

A more long-term solution, since we have so-called "commands" that can
contin a list og things to run, would be to say that some special
commands like "on-startup" or "on-newfile" would be run autotomatically
on these events if they exist.

Would that solve your issue?

However, the problem you are seeing shows that configuration of toolbars

Finally, I wonder whether we try to inherit the icon size from the OS...
