I am using 2.3.7 on macOS Sonoma (and before that on Monterey) and I do not
experience any slowdown. My document is over 1000 pages split into less than 10
files. It certainly contains paragraphs which are much longer than a few
sentences. So I presume that it could be an issue with your configuration.

In your preferences I noticed:

# LyX 2.0.4 generated this file. If you want to make your own
# modifications you should do them from inside LyX and save.

Format 1

Just a stab in the dark as I do not know anything about the inner workings of
LyX, but could it have anything to do with that old version of LyX and the very
old Format number?

LyX is painfully slow on my Windows computer, but this is a 5 year old Pentium
Surface Go, which was severely underpowered even when it was brand new. Event
on that machine I did not experience any dependence on the length of the
paragraph.

Re: Problems with LyX on Mac computers

2023-01-22 Thread Marcus Kriele via lyx-users
Ed, have you tried LyX 2.3.7, which came out very recently? I believe it is
universal, if you take the correct installer (there are two to choose from, one
for old versions of MacOS and one for the newer ones which support arm.

Re: About upgrading to MacOS 13

2022-12-07 Thread Marcus Kriele via lyx-users
Hi Daniel

Please note that Time Machine may not work for going back from macOS13 to
macOS12. At least it did not work in my case. I also realized that macOS13
changed the format of the Photos library so that I could not read it with
macOS12 after reinstalling the old operating system (fortunately I had a recent
backup for this library).

So if you try to upgrade I would strongly suggest to make a full backup first
without using Time Machine to ensure that you still have all your data, if it
does not work out.

With "absolute path" I mean the path from the root directory to the csv file,
so the complete path to the file in the file system.

But to be honest, I really think that If you are only interested in producing
plots, LyX is not the best tool. LyX is fantastic software for producing
written documents, and it is easy to include plots and pictures. But it is not
the best program to produce stand-alone plots. My advice would be to get a good
editor with a nice LaTeX environment. “Emacs" with the library “auctex" or
"Visual Studio Code" with the plugin "LaTeX Workshop" are great free choices
for Linux, Mac or Windows. If you never have worked directly with LaTeX before,
you will find a minimal plotting example in the first tutorial of the official
documentation of TikZ and PGF (PGF manual) .

I assume you are using a raw latex inset in LyX. Have you tried an absolute
path? If you produce a pdf, then LyX creates a temporary LaTeX document in a
directory for temporary files first and then processes this LaTeX document in
order to create a pdf. As far as I know (but I may be mistaken), raw LaTeX
input is copied verbatim into this LaTeX File. As the temporary directory is
normally different from the directory of your LyX file, it would not find csv
files with a relative path. You can set the folder for your temporary files in
the preferences, but this is a general setting and not a per document setting.
So I would not recommend doing so for finding your csv file.

I think, a better approach would be to produce a pdf for your plot outside LyX
and then to read the pdf into LyX as a figure. Advantages: the figure input
dialog does accept relative paths, you can use an editor which is better suited
to do LaTeX work (syntax highlighting etc), if you have a large document with
many files the LyX compilation is much faster because it does not have to
process TikZ (which is slow) every time.

I had the last 12.x which came out before Ventura. So it was very likely 12..6
and at least 12.5 But I did not install Python 3 on Ventura. This was
probably my mistake

Re MacOS Ventura trouble

2022-10-27 Thread Marcus Kriele via lyx-users
Thanks for both your answers

@JMarc: I simply upgraded to the newer Mac OS. Prior to the update, LyX was
running smoothly, so I would assume that I had Python 3.0 as well. An
OS-update shouldn’t delete existing programs. In the meanwhile I have
downgraded OS again and cannot verify anymore whether I did have Python 3.0

@el: I I have an ARM MacBook Pro. So if you could post whether it worked for
your M1 MacBook would be helpful to anyone who might have read about my
troubles.
