How to install Lyx 2.0 side by side with 1.6 on a MAC?
Hello, I would like to know if it is possible and how to install Lyx 2.0 on a MAC OS X (10.6 Snow Leopard) as a a separate installation so that it doesn't interfere with the 1.6 installation. Thank you for your cooperation pierfranco 2011/5/8 Ken kmai...@gmail.com Hi. Is it possible to have both LyX 1.6 and Lyx 2.0 installed at the same time? Are there any consequences to having both installed? I would like to try LyX 2.0 but don't want to break anything on my current work and want to go back to 1.6 easily if necessary. Thanks
Re: How to install Lyx 2.0 side by side with 1.6 on a MAC?
Thanks Jens for the explanations. It works. Pierfranco 2011/5/8 Jens Nöckel noec...@uoregon.edu Yes, it's possible, and I understand why you want to do it (why throw out a version that works fine, if you're not sure about possible bugs in the new version?) So you could do the following: 1) assuming you have LyX version 1.6.x installed the usual way, rename /Appplications/LyX.app to something else, e.g. LyX-1-6.app. 2) Just for safety, I would make a backup copy of the LyX-1.6 folder in ~/Library/Application Support/ (ideally, this shouldn't be necessary, because a new LyX-2.0 folder is created) 3) Download and install LyX version 2 Now whenever you want to open a file with the older LyX, drag it onto the icon for LyX-1-6 instead of the LyX application. One potential headache is to make sure LyX 2 is the default for opening LyX documents. You do that by highlighting any LyX file and going to the Get Info menu, then checking the open with... entry. It can sometimes be hard to make that setting stick for all files, especially if you go back and forth between old and new versions. So during this transition period, it's probably good to check the About LyX menu once in a while to verify you're using the version you intended. Be aware that files saved normally from LyX 2 won't be readable by LyX 1.6, so after some time you'll probably be happier working with the new version. Re: Bibliography problem and [?] questionmarks
Hello, in my experience I have obtained the question marks ? in the PDF file obtained from LyX, instead of regular citations, in these 2 cases: 1) as Richard said: when LyX doesn't find the bibtex file, maybe because it has been moved after inserting citations AND / OR 2) when there is something wrong with the bibliographic style selected. Since weremoose says he was able to insert citations using the LyX commands, the file path should be right (at least at the moment of inserting citations). So one reason for the problem could be the second one. I would suggest to try to select different bibliographic styles from the proper menu and then save the file and compile in order to verify if this could be the problem. pierfranco 2010/1/7 rgheck rgh...@bobjweil.com On 01/07/2010 09:23 AM, weremoose wrote: Hello, I am a mac user (currently on 10.6.2) and I decided to use LyX to write my thesis as it looked very promising. I found that I can use Zotero for my references, installed it along with lyz, everything works fine now and my citations are pushed to LyX. I tried to use different citation styles as well, it is still not working. One common reason for this is that the BibTeX file has the wrong sort of encoding, in particular, that you are somewhere using Unicode characters that are confusing the BibTeX processor. This is especially likely if you have tried exporting to LaTeX and running everything manually. Indeed, that is the best way to debug this kind of problem: Export to LaTeX; run the LaTeX sequence manually from a terminal (latex myfile; then bibtex myfile; then latex myfile; then latex myfile again, if necessary) and watch for error messages. You will see undefined citations the first latex run; this is normal and is why you need to run bibtex. It's on the bibtex run that you'll see what's causing the problem. Re: input preamble with biblatex?
Hi, I too have observed that the \includeonly command doesn't work and I would be very interested in knowing if there is a way to use it in LyX. For now, a very simple suggestion for Peter consists in compiling from the master file but only after including in a LyX note the chapters he doesn't want to compile: 1. highlight with the mouse the name of the file listed in the master file; 2. click on the LyX note icon in the command bar: the name of the file is now included in a LyX note and will not be sent to pdflatex for compilation 3. etc. for every file not to be compiled. Only names of files that must be compiled remain unchanged. This always works perfectly. pierfranco 2010/1/5 Peter Baumgartner peter.baumgart...@donau-uni.ac.at I'm writing on a long document (book with various chapters) with LyX 1.6.5 on OS X 10.5.8. After trying to prepare a master file with a preamble valid for all files and to work on each file separately I noticed through different posts on this forum that the command \includeonly does not work. At least that was the discussion on an older lyx version but I assume that this is still the case (independently that in the actual manual the \includeonly command is still mentioned as it would function properly). Is this right? So I tried to separate the preamble commands in a special file preamble.tex and \input it into every file. But this didn't work. It generated many errors, all of them - as far as I can see - related with my bibliography. As I'm using biblatex with the module biblatex-citation-style I assume that this is also the problem. Can anyone suggest how to proceed? -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/input-preamble-with-biblatex-tp4254194p4254194.html Sent from the LyX - Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Re: Zotero to Bibtex to Lyx: A Problem not a baseball play.
Hi John, I use a lot both Zotero and LyX but my workflow consists in never using bibtex files directly exported from Zotero. Instead (for several reasons and not because of the problems you mention) I always export from Zotero to BibDesk (an application similar to JabRef, but only available for Mac OS X) and then I use from LyX the .bib file generated by BibDesk. This always works very well. So, I could only try to give you the following 2 different suggestions: 1) 1st suggested solution: export from Zotero to JabRef and then use the JabRef file in conjunction with LyX OR: 2) 2nd suggested solution: try to use the .bib file generated by Zotero but when you export this file from Zotero don't check the UTF8 option As to the fact that sometimes the key of some records in the .bib file generated by Zotero has 4 ? this is due to the fact that Zotero, when exports records in the bibtex format, automatically creates the bibtex key for each records following this convention: lastname1stauthor_1stwordoftitle_publication year. When the publication year field is empty, Zotero adds 4 ? at the end of the bibtex key created as explained above. Hope this can be useful. Re: Beamer problem with LyX
Hi, thank you all for the suggestions you have sent. Actually I have solved the problem, even if I am not sure how I did it. I made another similar file and progressively I copied into it the slides from the previous one. Maybe the problem was due to some long URL I had put into some slides using the URL button in LyX. Infact, after checking other working files, I discovered that in the past I had put the URL only in the first line of the URL box, withouh checking the case for obtaining an hyperlink. Maybe this could have been the cause of some errors? Anyway, in my experience, while other LaTeX classes work perfectly with LyX, in the case of the Beamer class I have already experienced in the past some problem of the same kind. In my opinion this could be due to the fact that LyX treats beamer files in a slightly different way than the ortodox LaTeX way: LyX susbtitutes all commands for \begin{frame} and \end{frame} with its own commands: \lyxframeend. This is visible if one exports the LyX file into a LaTeX file. So maybe, when you move the slides, this can be a cause for errors, which would never happen using a standard LaTeX editor with standard LaTeX commands. Does anyone agree with this judgement upon his/her personal experience of using the beamer class with LyX? Pierfranco 2009/10/25 Paul A. Dear Yannick, I am glad to hear that the files I sent you solved your problem. I tried to send my e-mail, with the attached files, even to the lyx-us...@lists.lyx.orgbut the mail systems continues to refuse my message to the list. I don't know why. But maybe it is not so difficult to have it and in any case I will be happy to send it to other interested people who would like to use the LyX version of André Miede's ClassicThesis, by Nick Mariette together with the biblatex package. pierfranco 2009/9/4 Yannick Wurm yannick.w...@unil.ch Cool that's excellent! Re: Multiple Bib - Koma
Hi Yannick, I have very recently tested a solution to your problem using the biblatex package. Even if biblatex is still beta I can assure you that it is a very effective and easy solution, very flexible and adaptable to different needs. Read the instruction on the LyX wiki dedicated to the use of biblatex at http://wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/Biblatex. It is indispensable in your case to install the biblatex package downloadable from http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/biblatex.html. Also you will have to install the Perl script bibtexall into an executable path so that LyX will be able to compile all the files produced. Herewith enclosed I add an exemple I have developed modifying an original file found in the exemples directory of the biblatex package downloaded from http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/biblatex.html The code is pure LateX but it has also been tested with LyX and the KOMAscript report class, so it perflectly works. You just need to import this file in LyX and make adjustements following the specific instructions at http://wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/Biblatex for using biblatex with LyX. I can also add that I haven't still used in conjunction with the LyX port of the ClassicThesis style which I am also using, but I plan to do it very soon and I think I will only have to modify the original files related to the LyX port of the ClassicThesis style by commenting out fthe packages and options related to: 1) natbib 2) backref package (you will use the specific functions provided by biblatex) besides it is absolutely important to put the biblatex package before the hyperref package. Re: LyX and references
Hi all, since I am in a very similar situation as Alessio, that is I am an Italian user working with an Italian version of LyX (i.e. menues etc are translated in Italian), and writing in English, I confirm that the normal LyX is behaviour consists in showing in these cases (and other similar cases as well, e.g. Indice instead of Table of contents; Bibliografia instead of Bibliography) an Italian expression (e.g. the Italian conjunction e instead of the English conjunction and). However the output (the PDF) is perfectly correct showing in these cases and (not e). So, from my experience, I also suggest that if the real problem Alessio is experiencing consists only in the output and only in an ampersand instead of an and, this shoud be related to the style, that is the .bst file he is using. Re: Captions
Hi, the most effective way (as far as I know) to customise float capions is to use the package caption which provides several options. I use it in connection withLyX and the KOMA script report class and I obtain what I want. If it is not included in your LaTeX distribution you can download it from: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/caption/ and install in your computer. Then in you preamble you should put the following lines: \usepackage{caption} \captionsetup[table]{format=plain,skip=\medskipamount} % for tables \captionsetup[figure]{format=plainskip=\medskipamount} %for figures Check the documentation with all the options you can use at http://www.ctan.org/get/macros/latex/contrib/caption/caption-eng.pdf Best wishes Pierfranco 2009/8/21 solvi.natl...@uis.no Hi! What are System Requirements for LyX Mac OS X?
Dear all, I would like to replace my LyX 1.5.4 version on my iBook with MAC OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) with the new 1.6.3 version of LyX but I have two questions: 1) compatibility between LyX 1.6.3 and my version of the MAC OS X: I am unable to find on http://wiki.lyx.org/Mac/Mac or at http://www.lyx.org/Download information about the system requirements for version 1.6.3. Is this version compatible with MAC OS X 10.3.9 or not? Apple downloads at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/lyx.html says it requires at least MAC OS X 10.4 (Tiger); VersionTracker at http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/47551 says it is compatible with MAC OS X 10.3.9; softt32 http://www.soft32.com/download_226661.html says it requires Tiger. So what is the truth about compatibility with the OS? 2) what is the compatibility with documents written with the old version. Are there any problem? Thank you for your cooperation. Pierfranco

Re: lmodern pdfs not sharp on-screen
Hi all, speaking of fonts, I could add my experience with LaTeX (LyX) using MAC OS X and mostly Preview, that is the default PDF viewer on MAC computers. Actually I have never used lmodern because it didn't look well on the screen, as it has been said. After several trials I have found out that these fonts were best both for screen reading and for printing. In the Roman family: Charter, Fourier, Utopia. For the sans serif family I use berasans. All these fonts are available through a standard LaTeX distribution, or at least with a MAC OS X LaTeX distribution, so you don't need to install any additional font. best wishes Pierfranco 2009/6/17 Olivier Ripoll durocortorum73-gm...@yahoo.fr Barankay, Iwan wrote: Hi, I am using the latest Lyx and chose lmodern (Latin Modern) as my default font. Thanks, Iwan Hi, You may have problems to find a font looking sharp everywhere, because it's also dependent on the viewer software (a lot) and some OS settings ('OS' in the widest meaning): On Windows XP, for example, pdf with latin modern sans-serif look sharp on screen when using Adobe Reader 8 or GSview, but do not look so sharp with Sumatra (0.9) or Foxit reader 3. There are two different display modes in Foxit (both not-good-looking) and three in Adobe Reader. And there are yet other alternatives... I guess it may be more uniform on linux, as most readers share libraries (poppler, etc.), but Foxit and Adobe Reader may still differ. Sorry for the somehow bad news, but I'm afraid there is no universal answer. Good luck in your quest. Best regards, Olivier

Re: Citation and creation of bibliography
Hi, I would like to offer a very simple suggestion: if you use Natbib you could also use as a bib style humannat from the pulll down menu in LyX for selecting a bibliographic style. Using the humannat bib style you can obtain a bibliography style similar to the one you would like (but just one carriage return). See these examples from the references listed in a PDF file of a an article produced with LyX, a bibtex file managed with BibDesk and humannat as the bib style: Bishop, A. P., B. Mehra, I. Re: Breaking long URL?
Hi Peter, I have put in the preamble \usepackage{breakurl} and everything is fine. I use a normal .bib file and I do not biblatex. In my last document I have a long bibliography with a lot of refences to electronic documents and web pages, then there is plenty of URL in there and breaking of URLs works fine. Hope this can be helpful. Pierfranco 2008/12/2 Peter Baumgartner [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, How to break URL at non-letters without hyphen? I've turned on HyperRef Support on and also checked the box break link over lines but still the URLs do not break. Breaking of URLs works for me in the bibliography with biblatex but not with the normal bibtex bibliography. And in both cases it does not work within normal paragraphs. I've tried breaklinks=true in the option line of the PDF feature dialog but without success. What's wrong? ( OSX 10.4.11, LyX 1.6.0., TeXLive 2008) Peter
Re: Breaking long URL?
Hi Peter, happy to have been of help. But sorry: I can't remember where I found the breakurl package. I spent part of last summer learning the basics of LaTeX and how to customize LyX texts so that they could suit my needs and really I can't remember all the stuff I have checked when I encountered some problem and found a solution. By the way, I think this is a common problem with laTeX. There are so many packages and the environment grows in such an anarchic way, a positive anarchic way which is the result of the cooperation of several unconnected people, that it is difficult to know all what you need and when you need it. That's why the email list is very very useful because it saves you a lot of time. Pierfranco 2008/12/2 Peter Baumgartner [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have put in the preamble \usepackage{breakurl} and everything is fine. @Pierfranco: Thanks! - This works in both cases (bibtex and biblatex). Is this a special package? How did you find this out?

Re: All Authors in citation
Hi, 1st problem: the use of et al. this IS DUE TO APA! So how could it be different? In any case, as for I know, there is no style which manages a different behaviour, that is the use of et al. only for the second reference on. Anyway, try using the custom-bib package and create a personal style that suits you. This is not difficult: all instructions appear on the screen and you have just to select your preference among some optional choices. You could also use 3 other styles similar to APA: apacite, apalike, newapa The advantage is that in these three cases you don't need to use the APA article class, so you can use any class and then numbered sections, or what you prefer. 2nd problem: there must be some problem with the original bibliographic file because this problem is not a standard behaviour with APA. Open the .bib file containing your references using a simple text editor and check if there is somethibg which is not correct. Hope to be of help. Re: use of xcolor in LyX
Hi all, sorry for having sent my suggestion about how to define the url color just to Nikos and not to the list. This was because I forgot to use Reply all. Re: Single Author, Single Year, Multiple Articles
As far as I know, the addition of a letter to the year, which is useful in the case you cite in the same paper 2 or more publications by the same author with different titles but published in the same year, depends from the specific citation style used and selected once and for all in the selection window in LyX where you also select the bib file. For example, econometrica, which is one of the citation styles proposed by LyX, manages the addition of a letter to the publication year in the needed cases. Re: Create Lyx-document without documentclass?
Hi all, for producing handouts from beamer presentation with LyX .1.5 I use this method: 1) in the beamer document I add handout as an option to the beamer class 2) in the preamble I add the following lines: \usepackage{wasysym,graphicx,pgfpages} 3) then in the preamble: a) for producing an handout on a A4 sheet with 2 frames in vertical position, I add this line: \pgfpagesuselayout{2 on 1}[letterpaper, border shrink=5mm] or: b) for producing an handout on a A4 sheet containg 4 frames in landscape position, I add this line: \pgfpagesuselayout{4 on 1}[letterpaper, border shrink=5mm,landscape] Pierfranco 2008/10/26 Jürgen Spitzmüller [EMAIL PROTECTED] uwe wrote: Therefore my questions: Is it possible to create a Lyx-docment without documentclass? Don't think so. Or there other suggestions for the Problem? I do this as follows: 1. create a beamer presentation document as usual. 2. create a second document, beamer-article class, for the handout 3. Include the beamer document as a child document To get it work, you need to insert an empty frame into the beamer-article document (i.e. a BeginFrame and and EndFrame) to get some preamble stuff set. Apart from that (and an annoying warning that the child document is of a different class than the master) it works pretty well. Jürgen

Re: Create Lyx-document without documentclass?
Hi, I am also interested in creating handouts but I can't find a beamer-article class in Lyx menu where to select your document class. If you choose the article class, then how could you create an empty frame? LyX doesn't provide commands for creating frames in the article class, unless you write them as an ERT. Is that something I am missing in the instructions provided by Jurgen? Re: How to change pdf viewer?
Hi, I must confess that even in my case (LyX 1.5.4 on Mac Os X 10.3.9), if I want to change the default PDF viewer I have to put the whole path to the executable. For example, for using the pdf viewer Adobe Reader 7.1.0 for Mac it works only if I use: /Applications/Adobe\ Reader\ 7.1.0/Adobe\ Reader\ 7.1.0.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe\ Reader instead if i follow the other suggestions and use: open -a Adobe Reader 7.1.0 it doesn't work. I've disabled auto-reload in Skim, since this sometimes does not work in combination with LyX's multiple compilation of the file. So I have the attached script in ~/bin, set the script as executable (chmod u+x ...), in LyX ~/bin/SkimReload.sh, and then always use View PDF (not: Update PDF) in LyX HTH, Konrad

Change character dimensions of numbered subsections titles
Hi all, I use Lyx and the class Article. I find that the titles of numbered subsections are too big and I would like to change them. However if i select these titles and change their character dimensions, the numbers remain as big as before and only the words of the title change. Is there a method to hack this style? Any idea about an ERT command or something to put in the preamble? Thank in advance for your help. Pierfranco

I agree with Jurgen: my bibtex database contains now 600 references and I don't have any problem in using it with LyX. On the contrary: being a LyX users for just a few months, I am always amazed by realizing how it is easy and aeffective to insert references in papers using LyX. Obviously it would be a great problem if LyX coun't use a big database for managing references so as that LyX users would be compelled to split their database in several smaller dtabases. So I would say that there is no such a limit to entries that lyx can read from the database as Daniel says. Re: Bibliography format problem, Please help !!!!!!!!!!
Hi, among the several bibliographic styles made available by LyX and which you can select from the bibliograpich style menu there is also one that provides a very similar effect to the one you would like to obtain: humannat. Author names are always put on a separated line after which follows the other bibliographic data beginning with the publication year. These are three examples of some references I have put in a publication formatted using this style: Bishop, A. P., N. A. Van House, and B. P. Buttenfield, eds. 2003b. *Digital Library Use. Social Practice in Design and Evaluation*. Cambridge (MA): The MIT Press. Borgman, C. L. 1996. Why are online catalogs still 'hard' to use? *Journal of the American Society for Information Science,* 47(7):493–503. De Rosa, C. 2005. *College students' perceptions of libraries and information resources : a report to the OCLC membership*. Dublin (Ohio): OCLC Online Computer Library Center. [Online]. Available from: http://www.oclc.org/reports/pdfs/studentperceptions.pdf [Last checked 2008-08-26]. As you can see hummanat also manage titles in italic for journals and books. The URL and Last checked fields have been added by me to my humannat style file using the urlbst-0.6-1 package. The only relevant difference from your example consists in the position of the publication year. But the real problem I am facing right now is about reference formatting. The above file and almost all other style files available on net LIST THE REFERENCES in a single line e.g. Auger P., J. Phys. Pierfranco 2008/9/30 rohitthakkar [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi everyone, I am using lyx for writing my thesis and am a Really new user of latex. After much hard work, I have decided to use LYX and for my bibliography I wish to use jabref. Now, creation of references in jabref is Ok. I have decided to use the following filefor the bib style. http://www.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/bibtex/unsrt.bst I have adjusted some minor customizations for author name year etc.. But the real problem I am facing right now is about reference formatting. The above file and almost all other style files available on net LIST THE REFERENCES in a single line e.g. Auger P., J. Phys. Radium 6, 205 (1925) But I want them to be in the below given format Auger P., J. Phys. Radium 6, 205 http://n2.nabble.com/file/n1128059/unsrt.bst unsrt.bst (1925) i.e. Authors on the first line journal, publication details in the second. I have tried all my options but I am not able to change this style file to move to second line. Kindly suggest the Change at the earliest. Thanks in advance.
Re: LyX for MAC: problems in handling file images
I have checked my installation of ImageMagick: 6.3.3. Most elements are in the .usr/local/lib Maybe I installed it when I installed the full MacTeX package containing the texlive2007 package. Now, since I am a totally beginner in the Lyx and Latex arena (I have been using, LyX for 3 weeks), I am not sure about what are the right ways for uninstalling/installing LaTeX packages and additional software. Perhaps I could do the two operations through the i-Installer? However I have just checked it for ImageMagick and it says that ImageMagick is being updated and then is not available. Maybe I could download it from http://www.imagemagick.org/? But then how could I uninstall the present version and install the new one? Sorry, but since I am used only to uninstall ordinary applications by moving them from the Application folder to the Trash, which is not the case with ImageMagick, I am unsure about how to uninstall ImageMagick and then reinstall it. Numbered sections: why 0.1 and not 1 etc.?
Hi everybody, I am a newcomer and I am using since a few days Lyx 1.5.4 for Mac and the class report: why if I use numbered sections (without parts, chapters etc.: just sections) the authomated numbers are 0.1, 0.2 etc? I would like to have normal numbers like 1, 2 etc. not decimal numbers. What can I do to have normal numbers? Is this a problem of the class report, since if I use the class article I don't have this problem? Thanks for your help. Pierfranco

But when I open LyX, I can see a blank page of a new document or what I have written in an old LyX document with 1.5.4, but when I start typing (either in a new or in an old document) I can normally see just the first line of my writing, because when I hit return and begin typing other words on the following line, on the screeen I just see diagonal lines and I can't see any character of what I am typing until I hit return again. Lines of writing seem to be stretched and reduced to diagonal lines and become almost invisible. And this again for any added line of writing. I have tried to unistall everything and also LyX 1.5.6 and install LyX 1.5.5 but nothing change. I have an iBook G4, Power PC, 1.2 Ghz 1.25 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.3.9. Could you please help me? Thank you! Pierfranco
