URGENT: How to use algorithm float?

1999-12-17 Thread Q Modnar

Hi, how do I use algorithm float? I've already created the
algorithm float fromt he menus and have put
\usepackage{algorithm} in my preamble. But are there
specific commands within the float that I can use, say to
indent text, bold etc. Can someone give me a simple
example?

Do I need to use LaTeX commands within the float, and if so
where can I get a list of commandsa Yahoo search did
not reveal much.

Thanks.

HELP:Sub/superscripts not scaled properly

1999-07-29 Thread Q Modnar

Hi, I'm writing a bunch of equations which uses subscripts
which are words not variables. So (in Math mode) I've got
things like
 V
  low
Where V is a normal variable and the subscript "low" is a
word. I enter "low" by first pressing Alt-C-M. However I
find that the word "low" isn't scaled properly and looks
quite large in the generated postscript file. I find that
if I switch to AMS layout then it is scaled properly. Can
you offer any solutions, as I don't really want to switch
to AMS layout.

Thanks.

Can't get lyx-server (lyxpipes) to work

1999-06-25 Thread Q Modnar

Hi, I've just installed tkbibtex which I've read can
communicate with LyX directly through pipes. However I
can't get the pipes to work. I've alread added the line
  \serverpipe "/home/qam/.lyxpipe
to my ~/.lyxrc file but when I run LyX neither the
.lyxpipe.in nor the .lyxpipe.out pipes are created. I tried
typing in the short line in the "Extended documentation" to
send some info to the LyX document but nothing happens
because the pipes aren't created and tkbibtex reports "LyX
not active". I tried it also in kLyX by adding the
\serverpipe line to the
/home/qam/.kde/share/apps/klyx/lyxrc file but it doesn't
work in kLyX as well. What am I doing wrong. I have read
the "Extended documentation" fully and completely.

I am using LyX 1.0.2 on a Solaris machine. Thanks.

Advice reqd.: Going to start thesis

1999-06-23 Thread Q Modnar

Hi, this will be my first attempt at writing a thesis using
LyX and so I've been following the discussions on the
subject which were taking place in May. Before I start
writing the thesis I'd like some info. I'd appreciate it
even if you have answers to only some of the questions:

1. Since my university doesn't have a fixed class style
(there's guidelines but no fix style), should I use the
"book" style or "article" style?

2. Is it possible to have my bibliography in the format:
   Authorname, Title, Year
instead of
   [1] Authorname, Title, Year
The reason I'm asking is that I'd like to reference papers
by Authorname, Year in the body of my thesis instead of
using number in the form of [x]. If this is possible then
how are cross references and labels made.

3. Since I expect the thesis to run into a couple of
hundred pages I thought of writing it in sections, i.e. a
each chapter in a seperate files, so that it's easy for me
to carry a copy round in a disk. Will I have any trouble
combining the chapters later? What happens to the
bibliography? Can I have a common bibliography for all the
files?

Thanks very much!
