So now I can edit index entries so that they preserve character
formatting.  Example--
View/Source shows \texttt{keyword}
After Insert index entry source shows \index{keyword}\texttt{keyword}
Changing \index{keyword} to \index{texttt{keyword}} results in the
typewriter family being used for keyword in the index.

While this preserves character formatting, it introduces a new problem:
sort order in the index changes.  The DVI and PDF show that words
rendered in the typewriter family are listed before words rendered in
roman.  Not a useful result, given that I'm working on the 2nd edition
of a book whose index is 45 double-column pages.

I wonder if LyX 1.6.x has the same problem(s).
