Wolfgang,

the size of the export depends on the file type you use, the canvas size
and the resolution. If you use png (which is the raster export file type of
inkscape) the end result will be large indeed. Inkscape does not export to
jpg.
But if you open up your export from inkscape in gimp, resize or decrease
the resolution and export it to a different file type, like jpg, the end
result will be smaller. The quality of the image will be less too, you have
to figure out a balance between file size and quality. Usually print
quality is a resolution of 300dpi

Krita works in a similar way, only with different buttons and options. You
can create a cover in krita as you can in inkscape, but if you use .png as
file type, and the canvas size and the resolution of the image is the same,
 your file will be large again. Krita can export to several file types. So
If you use .jpg or another compressed file type, you'll get smaller files.

Hi all,

I've asked it before, didn't get it to work back then, now on Ubuntu 14.04
giving it another try, but no changes seen.

I'm using lyx 2.0.6 and try to use Lyxbook for my novel. It's in Dutch
though and when I use this layout Lyx complains about Package babel Error:
Unknown language 'english'. and stops when I try to render it to pdf.

The description of the errors talks about:
\begin{BookTitle}, then it selects the title of the book, when clicking on
the description.
\begin{Standard}, also selects the title, when clicking on the description
and
\begin{Standard}, then it selects the first chapter.

I have no clue what's going on because English is not used. It's all in
Dutch.

These errors don't show up in other layouts.

spell check (again)

Hi all,

I've upgraded to kubuntu 13.10 and can't get my dutch spell checking to
work in Lyx. It seems to be an issue after each setup I do, though usually
I find what I need, but now I don't.

Enchant is installed, myspell-nl too, something specifically I've got to do
in lyx?

I'm sorry, I did intend to reply to the list, but gmail has different
defaults then what people want of course.

reconfigure doesn't do any better. I deleted the config file in .lyx
directory, didn't help either.

In  language Settings - Language
I have now 'Dutch' as user interface language, but it remains English
anyway...
Language package: Automatic
Command start: \selectlanguage{$$lang}

Do I have to replace 'lang' with 'nl' or 'dutch'? I expect it should stay
'lang', as a variable, set by the language package.

Ok,

thanks for the info, it needed a couuple of restarts :-) it does spellcheck
now, but when trying to get a pdf preview I get Packabe babel Error: You
haven't loaded thelanguage english yet, and it doesn't start rendering to
pdf.

I do use LyxBook --Archaic as document class, it is for a novel, perhaps
this class does not support Dutch?

Ok,

thanks for the info, it needed a couuple of restarts :-) it does spellcheck
now, but when trying to get a pdf preview I get Packabe babel Error: You
haven't loaded thelanguage english yet, and it doesn't start rendering to
pdf.

I do use LyxBook --Archaic as document class, it is for a novel, perhaps
this class does not support Dutch?

Hi all,

I've upgraded to kubuntu 13.10 and can't get my dutch spell checking to
work in Lyx. It seems to be an issue after each setup I do, though usually
I find what I need, but now I don't.

Enchant is installed, myspell-nl too, something specifically I've got to do
in lyx?

I'm sorry, I did intend to reply to the list, but gmail has different
defaults then what people want of course.

reconfigure doesn't do any better. I deleted the config file in .lyx
directory, didn't help either.

In  language Settings -> Language
I have now 'Dutch' as user interface language, but it remains English
anyway...
Language package: Automatic
Command start: \selectlanguage{$$lang}

Do I have to replace 'lang' with 'nl' or 'dutch'? I expect it should stay
'lang', as a variable, set by the language package.

 Hi all,

 I'm using the book (AMS) class for my book here, and I've added an
 abstract. Now the abstract is longer then one page there seems to be quite
 an issue. In the pdf I see the text run through the bottom margin, and is
 cut off at the bottom edge of the page. Instead of printing it onto the
 next page it seems like the 'abstract part' thinks that the page is longer,
 while it isn't. The next page is blank, where the text should continue.

 What can I do to solve this problem?

I'm writing a book, a manuscript, and all publishers here in Belgium need a
summary of the story to evaluate it. Since it is quite a big story I'm
writing, several hundreds of pages, it seems impossible to cram the
abstract into one single page without loosing most of the essential story
lines.

I guess I'll have to try out other document classes then. The 'abstract'
section definitely is part of the book(AMS) class though. I hope I won't
have to dig into hacking a class to get what I want. I'm writing, the story
must get finished and I have not time to code, nor do I want to get
distracted by issues like this. Now I still need to get Dutch spell
checking fixed too, doesn't work out of the box on Ubuntu aparently...
another distraction I can miss.

 for: why would you want a multi-page abstract in a book? Have you
 thought about using a different environment for what you are trying to
 accomplish?  To stress the obvious, abstracts are short summaries
 generally used for articles only. I don't know the details, but it is
 very possible that the possibility of a multi-page abstract is not
 even contemplated in the latex class you are using. Hence the problem
 you are facing. If you're trying to provide something like an
 Executive summary, a combination of unnumbered document divisions
 (i.e. the starred command *chapter, *section, etc) and ad-hoc
 formatting may be all you need. Or you may look into the memoir class,
 which offers a more powerful abstract environment than the standard
 classes. I think the Komascript book class offers similar facilities.

 Executive summary, a combination of unnumbered document divisions
 (i.e. the starred command *chapter, *section, etc) and ad-hoc
 formatting may be all you need. Or you may look into the memoir class,
 which offers a more powerful abstract environment than the standard
 classes. I think the Komascript book class offers similar facilities.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I'm writing a book, a manuscript, and all publishers here in Belgium need a
summary of the story to evaluate it. Since it is quite a big story I'm
writing, several hundreds of pages, it seems impossible to cram the
abstract into one single page without loosing most of the essential story
lines.

I guess I'll have to try out other document classes then. The 'abstract'
section definitely is part of the book(AMS) class though. I hope I won't
have to dig into hacking a class to get what I want. I'm writing, the story
must get finished and I have not time to code, nor do I want to get
distracted by issues like this. Now I still need to get Dutch spell
checking fixed too, doesn't work out of the box on Ubuntu aparently...
another distraction I can miss.

if I  understand it right,  you want to modify the mac keybindings. These
you won't find in lyx of course, but in your mac keyboard preferences.
Perhaps there is an option to allow a program override the mac shortcuts? I
actually really can't say, 'cause I use linux here. Otherwise you really
will have to modify each shortcut you need to change, in your mac or in lyx
(preferences-Editing-Shortcuts).

 I'm using the latest binary of LyX available for Mac, 2.0, and I've been
 struggling to fix an annoying behavior. In Mac, you can insert symbols (such
 as \mu) by pressing Option+M, or Option+(some letter). However, this
 conflicts with LyX's keyboard shortcuts, e.g. Option+M should allow me to do
 some math things like insert pairs of \left \right parentheses.  My question
 is, how can I override the default Mac behavior of inserting greek symbols
 when I use Meta+(letter) in favor of the normal LyX behavior?  I've been
 unable to find any solutions, and the only one I can think of is redefining
 every single Meta+(letter) combination, which seems like a lot of
 work/trouble to solve a basic problem.

useless restriction. If I didn't wan'ta TOC I wouldn't insert one. And I



guess I'll have to add latex code to get rid of the numbering now, right?

No latex code needed for either approach.





Menu Document-Settings-Numbering  TOC is what you want.

in the TOC.





No latex, just a user-friendly dialog box.





The default is to use numbering. After you change it, you may



save the new setting as default - very useful if you plan on writing



most of your future documents without numbering.





The same goes for all the other document settings - you



can change the default so you won't have to do it again for



the next documents you write.





You can also make empty template documents and save them



to the template folder.

TOC trouble and margins are not followed

Hi all,

I'm trying to typeset my novel, that I want to publish soon. I have started
using lyx because it hides most of the technical stuff, so I can concentrate
on the writing.

But I'm having quite some trouble to get things looking right, things I
thought were handled automatically.

First of all, my TOC remains empty. As I understood, I just had to do
'Insert - list/TOC - Table of contents. I do use the correct paragraph
types, Part, Chapter, section, subsection etc...  so I thought the TOC would
be generated automatically when viewing the pdf, but it does not.

Secondly, a novel is rarely printed on A4, and the company I'd like to ask
to print my book gives a discount on printing on A5 (printing on demand
service) so I thought changing the document setting page size from A4 to A5.
This obviously has a big influence on the flow of the text. My language is
Dutch, and hyphenation is horrible. I do have texlive-lang-dutch installed.
Also, words that can be split sometimes are not, which results in many, many
overfull \hbox (from LaTeX Log). The margins are not followed.

What can I do about these problems? I'm using Linux Mint11, if that extra
information can help.

I fixed the TOC trouble with latex command \addcontentsline, that seems to  
work. I thought that was not necessary in lyx, perhaps I'm wrong.
Setting the font at 10 makes a difference indeed, but it still is not good  
at all.


Can I easily edit the dutch hyphenation file? Perhaps my edits could be  
used as 'update' for others to use too.

Do these show up properly under the navigation menu? How about in the




outline?







You might also want to check under DocumentSettingsNumbering  TOC.

I'd check the margins, for one thing; the default ones may be too wide




for A5 paper. Also, you may want to reduce the font size. 10 point




should be right.







Hyphenation is entirely a LaTeX issue. Perhaps the hyphenation files for




Dutch just aren't very good. I do not know.

Writing a book, I decided to use the book class. There are several book
classes, but when adding a table of contents, suddenly all pages had 'Table
of contents' in their header (I still don't understand why). The book class
was the only one working properly, I thought at least.

Why is it so hard to get good typesetting, automatic table of contents
rendering, and plenty of other stuff? I yet have to find one tool that does
the job properly without hassle, adding things, modifying things, looking
for workarounds. There is always something going wrong. I don't want to code
my book, I want to write it.

Don't get me wrong, latex and lyx do a terrific job, but as with many open
source tools there is always something extra that has to be done to get the
job done right. I am actually getting tired of it.

 These go into the preamble, or into a little package you can import.

Aparently the latex log file shows this :
Package babel Warning: No hyphenation patterns were loaded for
(babel) the language `Dutch'
(babel) I will use the patterns loaded for \language=0 instead.

I've searched with google, and I've found out some had to un-comment a line  
saying 'dutch nehyph.tex' .
I even did not find those words, but I did find 'dutch loadhyph-nl.tex and  
it already is un-commented.


When changed to hehyph.tex latex still throws the warning as shown above.

No, that shouldn't be necessary. What document class are you using?

I am not sure about this, but you can add you own hyphenation rules via  
commands like:



\hyphenation{for-mat-ting}



These go into the preamble, or into a little package you can import.

Richard, thanks for your offer to send you the lyx file, but at the moment
it's not necessary.

I think I got the hyphenation working, even though I don't know what I did.
Yesterday evening, last pdf preview it showed the error in the log, now my
pc is rebooted this morning, I take a look again, and hyphenation works as
expected. Perhaps I did something right, but it needed to be reconfigured on
a reboot. No idea why though.

and about the Section* yes, I use these.
Ahh, I get it, I should not have used the unnumbered sections!! What the
hell?

Now that is what I call thinking the wrong way about usability. It's like
with that date thing. Adding the authors name to the title automatically
adds todays date to it. You have to find a menu, somewhere and check
'suppress default date on front page', instead of just inserting 'date' to
your page if you'd want it.

So for an automatic TOC, numbered sections are a requirement. That's quite a
useless restriction. If I didn't wan't a TOC I wouldn't insert one. And I
guess I'll have to add latex code to get rid of the numbering now, right?

Hi all,

I'm trying to typeset my novel, that I want to publish soon. I have started
using lyx because it hides most of the technical stuff, so I can concentrate
on the writing.

But I'm having quite some trouble to get things looking right, things I
thought were handled automatically.

First of all, my TOC remains empty. As I understood, I just had to do
'Insert - list/TOC - Table of contents. I do use the correct paragraph
types, Part, Chapter, section, subsection etc...  so I thought the TOC would
be generated automatically when viewing the pdf, but it does not.

Secondly, a novel is rarely printed on A4, and the company I'd like to ask
to print my book gives a discount on printing on A5 (printing on demand
service) so I thought changing the document setting page size from A4 to A5.
This obviously has a big influence on the flow of the text. My language is
Dutch, and hyphenation is horrible. I do have texlive-lang-dutch installed.
Also, words that can be split sometimes are not, which results in many, many
overfull \hbox (from LaTeX Log). The margins are not followed.

What can I do about these problems? I'm using Linux Mint11, if that extra
information can help.

Do these show up properly under the navigation menu? How about in the




outline?







You might also want to check under DocumentSettingsNumbering  TOC.

I'd check the margins, for one thing; the default ones may be too wide




for A5 paper. Also, you may want to reduce the font size. 10 point




should be right.







Hyphenation is entirely a LaTeX issue. Perhaps the hyphenation files for




Dutch just aren't very good. I do not know.

You might also want to check under Document>Settings>Numbering & TOC.
