I'm not able to run it any closer than you on a windows machine.
Actually... I guess that bit depends on our geographic locations :-)

Might run faster if run on the server or on a machine closer to the
server (in the sense of fewer hops).

Speed isn't really an issue here, as long as it finishes before say
version LyX 1.4 arrives ;-)

You can make exceptions in robots.txt for exactly this client. See

Thanks for the info, I've modified robots.txt now and I'm looking into it

But you should only do that if you restrict the check to local links.

I didn't follow this thread to closely, but something that may help others

PS. A very simple way of documenting this is to simply create a wiki
page and from that page add link to this thread. See here for an example

http://wiki.lyx.org/pmwiki.php/Test/LinkingToGmanePost

although gmane (which archives the lists) seems a bit slow at the moment.
What you do is simply adding something like this to the wiki page:

LyxUsersThread:26572

where 26572 is a number that indicates the post... rather amazing that the
user's list is up to 26000 posts btw.

 I've enabled footnotes now, see
 http://wiki.lyx.org/pmwiki.php/Test/Footnote
 for an illustration/example.

Thanks, Christian. One more request ;-)

My footnote on http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyX137pre would ideally
have the markup:

blah blah blah
: : some quote
blah blah blah

If we continue this way you're going to want a complete mini-page in
the footnote eventually ;-)

However, the : : quoting markup appears to be disabled inside
of footnotes. Could you enable it?

Seriously speaking though, you're approaching the limit of what's
currently feasible now. I don't think this can be enabled, pmwiki isn't
recursive enough.

It might be possible, but I suggest you try a hack instead. I.e. something
that sort of looks what you want. One such hack would be something like
this:

[^Bla bla bla \\\nbsp; nbsp;indented... \\New line^]

Another way is to use 'custom markup' to introduce styling. It's possible
to use lots of different CSS stuff (span/div) but I'm not familiar
with it. Have a look here:

http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/PmWiki/WikiStyles
http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/PmWiki/WikiStyleExamples

A third solution is to simply not use footnote markup.. If you only have
one or two footnotes, you could simply use a normal link like this.

Bla bla bla'^{$Name}#note1 - 1^' bla bla

:Note 1 #anchor1: Bla bla bla bla

Thanks, Christian. One more request ;-)

My footnote on http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyX137pre would ideally
have the markup:

blah blah blah
: : some quote
blah blah blah

If we continue this way you're going to want a complete mini-page in
the footnote eventually ;-)

However, the : : quoting markup appears to be disabled inside
of footnotes. Could you enable it?

Seriously speaking though, you're approaching the limit of what's
currently feasible now. I don't think this can be enabled, pmwiki isn't
recursive enough.

It might be possible, but I suggest you try a hack instead. I.e. something
that sort of looks what you want. One such hack would be something like
this:

[^Bla bla bla \\\nbsp; nbsp;indented... \\New line^]

Another way is to use 'custom markup' to introduce styling. It's possible
to use lots of different CSS stuff (span/div) but I'm not familiar
with it. Have a look here:

http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/PmWiki/WikiStyles
http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/PmWiki/WikiStyleExamples

A third solution is to simply not use footnote markup.. If you only have
one or two footnotes, you could simply use a normal link like this.

Bla bla bla'^{$Name}#note1 - 1^' bla bla

:Note 1 #anchor1: Bla bla bla bla

LyX wiki has been upgraded

2005-12-06 Thread chr
Hi

This is a warning^H^H^H^H^H^H^H blurb that I just finally upgraded the
wiki to the new wiki engine. I've eventually realised that I'm unable to
guarantee a perfectly smooth transition, so instead I'll just plunge in
and deal with any problems as they occur and get the thing over with...

Having said that, I hope the ride won't be too bad, and I'll monitor the
lists for issuses related to the wiki, in addition to incrementally fixing
any remaining issues.

We're going from version 0.6 to 2.1, so there will be quite a few changes
but hopefully only for the better. The wiki markup has changed
substantially. However, this meant porting all the pages to the new
markup, which might have introduced errors. Anyway, the upgrade wiki
has replaced the old version and it can found in the usual place

http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/Welcome

whereas if you absolutely, definitely need to see what it looked like
using the old wiki you can find it here:

http://wiki.lyx.org/0.6.15/LyX/Welcome

Editing of the old pages is prohibited (with a password), so please modify
the new pages instead. The test wiki should *not* be used any more for
changes that you actually want to keep.

The major difference in markup is that all links should from now on be
written within square brackets, like this for instance:

Welcome

In addition, all directives are now written within (:...:), e.g.

(:include Welcome:)

The idea is that this will make things more consistent.

Another difference is that so called CamelCase (or WikiWords) are being
depreceated. If you wonder why, one reason is to avoid having every
occurence of LyX, LaTeX, BibTeX etc being changed into a link. Right now
you have to write e.g. [=LyX=] to avoid it from becoming a link. From now
on, the idea is that you should only get links when you explicitly
indicate this (by using double square brackets).

best regards

Hi, Christian.

See, for example, http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyX137pre
what should we do with all those approve sites hyperlinks?

Hi Angus

The answer is to click on the text approve site or approve url, which
will whitelist the site. This is a way to handle spammers. Anyway, someone
has already figured this out and clicked on the link, so they are
approved. For now no password is required. If we are spammed, we'll start
using a password for approving external links.

*Note* It can sometimes be confusing, and nothing happens when you click
on eg approve site. In this case the problem is usually that link isn't
actually written on the current wiki page, but instead on some other wiki
page that is included... So if you do run into any problems, let me know
via one of the lyx lists.

regards
/Christian

PS. In case there is some wiki page with *lots* of links, there might be a
problem approving them, because the wiki then assumes this is spam. Just
let me know about any such occurences and I'll fix it.

 Hi, Christian.

what should we do with all those approve sites hyperlinks?

Also in Note for users of Windows 98, how do I make the footnote? Indeed,

paragraphs?

I've enabled footnotes now, see

Welcome

In addition, all "directives" are now written within (:...:), e.g.

/Christian

Hi Angus

The answer is to click on the text "approve site" or "approve url", which
will whitelist the site. This is a way to handle spammers. Anyway, someone
has already figured this out and clicked on the link, so they are
approved. For now no password is required. If we are spammed, we'll start
using a password for approving external links.

*Note* It can sometimes be confusing, and nothing happens when you click
on eg "approve site".

In addition, it's a good idea to add a link to the special page in each
group that is used to list/describe pages in the group. Here, the page is
simply

 http://wiki.lyx.org/Tips/PageList

so I've added a link to your page from that page.

It's good you're explaining this, because somehow I'm a bit tired of
learning yet another markup syntax, especially through manuals and
tutorials.

I can understand that... would a reference card of the markup on a
single page be better?

However, in general I don't think the markup is the big problem, but
rather knowing *where* to add the information. And knowing how to
integrate the page with all the other pages, so that people can find it
relatively easy.

As for the markup... I think most writers could get by knowing only a
subset of what is shown below the edit form, i.e. this text:
http://wiki.lyx.org/PmWiki/EditQuickReference

In fact, I'd say these are the most common things you need to know:

!! A second level heading

!!! A third level heading

An emphasized word

* A list item
* Another list item
** A second level list item

and of course how to create a link to another page

- a link to the page LyX/Examples

Possibly this also deters other people from adding to the wiki.

Quit likely unfortunately.

Is there any way to use plain html and get that converted so that the
wiki engine accepts it?

I'm afraid not... there are actually good reasons for why HTML isn't
allowed, but I can't remember them right now.

as for the boxed thing, I'm leaving it since it seemed to get kind of

Hi,

I am trying to use the layout files from the below web page (I've been
looking for a layout like this for years!):

http://www.math.uiuc.edu/~hartke/computer/lyx/lyx.php

I put them in the `layouts' directory in the LyX configuration directory
(~/.lyx on Unix, ~/Library/Application Support/LyX/ on Mac). I ran
`reconfigure' in LyX and restarted the app. Now in the Document menu, the
new layout shows up as

Unavailable: articlethm

The layout is sort of only used by LyX to tell how stuff is displayed on
the screen. What you really need is the document class articlethm.cls/sty
exactly where/how you should install it depends on your LaTeX system.

This link explains some of these concepts
