I am looking to use margin notes, and the functionality I am seeking
seems to extend beyond the standard marginpar command, so I am using
the marginnote package.
I am looking to have margin notes on both sides, on a single-sided

Have you already had a look at sec. 4.3 Margin Notes of the
EmbeddedObjects manual that you find in LyX's Help menu? I guess what you
want is described there.

Looking again at Sec 4.3 of the EmbeddedObjects Manual, I see how to
do the left-hand margin.
However, I still cannot

I am using \setlength{\marginparwidth}{length}, which seems to be working!
Now I just need to find out how to work these custom insets!
