If you create a new doc and copy each section, one by one, to the new 
doc (leaving all previously copied sections in place), does the new doc 
always compile?  If so, then perhaps the problem is in the preamble of 
the old doc.  Even if the preamble is not the culprit, if the new doc 
compiles after copying ALL the content of the old doc, just delete the 
old doc and work with the copy.  It won't identify the problem, but it 
will get you past it.

i sort of work around the problem following your suggestion. the new doc only 
works when all the citations removed. i need to go further to see if my .bib 
also conflict with new doc later on. thanks for now.

the error area is my name!
i checked LaTeX source, everything looks fine. 
my name is keyed in with no fancy font or setting. plain plain standard environment. and it can be viewed dozen times before till now. i can't comprehend the problem. so, i turn to you for help... is there anyone can advise me where the actual problem is?

Quick hack:  If you're using a BibTeX blbliography, try making a copy of 
the document and deleting the bibliography from the copy.  If it 
compiles (with lots of [?] references), the problem is probably in the 
.bib file.


More time-consuming:  Try a bisection search.  Cut out the second half 
of the document and try to compile.  If the bug persists, restore the 
second half and cut out half of the first half, ad nauseum.
