I haven't encountered any problems so far with Lyx 1.6.5 and Mac OSX 10.6.2 
running on three different Macs.

Are you using the binary we provide for 1.6.5, or did you compile it
yourself? What you describe sounds like symptoms I see when I compile
LyX with Qt 4.5 or 4.6, but Qt 4.4 does not have these problems, at
least in my testing. (The binary we use for distribution uses Qt 4.4.)
