article-style TOC for article (paper)

Hi!

I really like the article (paper) layout, but I dislike the table of
contents style. What is the easiest way (or is there a way) to have an
article-style toc for article (paper)?

I don't have time to look into this right now, but if I did I'd look at 
the article.cls and paper.cls files and see how each of them defines 
\maketitle. Maybe you can just copy the definition from the one into the 
other.
