compose key on mac os

Hi! I am a new LyX user. On Mac OS X (10.3.4, US intl keuboard) I am not able to enter accents the way I am used to on any other application (i.e. alt-option` a for à, for instance. Can anybody let me know how to persuade LyX to accept alt-option as a regular modifier? Thank you in advance -
