customizing toolbars

Hi! I'm using LyX 1.5.1 on Mac OS X 10.4.10 (PPC) I would like to modify the content of some of the toolbars. The on- line help says that this can be done from the preference pane, but then it also adds that one should edit the default.ui file. Hence, not from the pref pane (???) I
