Actually, it is already possible to do this in LyX 1.1.6.
Just select the text in lyx, press ctrl+c, and then you can paste it in the
external program. Formulae in the text will be converted to latex, but
other elements (labels, references etc.) will not.

Good tip. I just tried, it only works when the marking is done in text mode,
i.e. go before the formula, Shift-right will mark the whole math-inset as
one token, ctrl-c copies to the clipboard. It does not work for parts of the
formula, as marking inside a math inset uses a different paste
buffer. Of course, you can delete the irrelevant part in the recieving application.

pasting equations from mathematica into lyx

2001-09-21 Thread Matthew Arnison

hi

say i've got some big nasty equation in mathematica, and I want to write
up a paper about it, is there some easy way i can paste that equation into
lyx so i don't have to retype it?

ideally it'd appear in lyx in Math Mode so i could click away at it, but
even getting it to work in TeX mode (ERT) would be a good start.

unfortunately i can't get it to work, so i'd be very greateful for some
hints.

take this dummy equation in mathematica:

Sqrt[x-y] Sin[beta]^2

then i can run TeXForm to convert it to TeX:

TeXForm[%]

{\sqrt{x - y}}\,{{\sin (\beta)}^2}

but i can't figure out how to paste that into lyx.

* a simple paste just puts in the braces and slashes as text

* i can't paste it into math mode, using middle mouse button nothing
happens, using Ctrl-V, the text appears outside the equation box as
regular text

* reLyX complains about missing document classes and missing begins and
ends etc.

i don't know much about LaTeX - i'm using LyX as a way to try and avoid
knowing too much about LaTeX. i'd rather think about physics than either
LaTeX programming or Word crashes.

apologies if some of the above shows obvious ignorance of LaTeX.
i have a hunch that this might not actually be a very easy problem to
solve.

i did a whole bunch of web searches and as far as i can tell no-one has
even asked this question before which is weird.

i think if there was a simple recipe for how to do this, it would be very
useful to a lot of people.

i am using lyx 1.1.6fix3-1 on debian linux (testing).

oh! while i'm here, in the Math Panel, in the bottom left 6 buton block,
all the buttons are blank except the Misc one. when i click the buttons
the symbol lists come up fine, but it's a bit annoying. oh, and when i
resize the lyx window, i have to collapse and expand the window to get
lyx to notice and refresh (using window maker).

meanwhile, thanks to all the lyx folks for a great little writing engine
that continues to get smoother.

cheers,
matthew.

  Hi Tuukka,
notice that you don't need that, reLyX has one option to tell it that

  Hi Tuukka,
notice that you don't need that, reLyX has one option to tell it that
the input is just a latex fragment.

reLyX -p -c textclass input.tex

will do the trick. What lyx lacks at present is a graphical display in the
import stage to consider all the options that reLyX supports.

  I hope this helps.

Wow, thats is great, is it possible to copy from the LyX window and have in
the clipboard the LaTeX code to paste somewhere else?

Just in the next version, and just for math code. If I'm not mistaken... :-)
