  Actually found a much better solution this morning while rummaging around
in ImgagMagick. By using the import function with the -frame option captures
the window (and its frame) in which the '+' cursor is placed. The syntax is:
import -frame filename.png|jpg|...

  I kept a small console window open next to the application frame and went
from one notebook tab to the next using import. When inserted in the LyX
document they all allowed changes to the bounding box.

 This is one I've not before encountered in my years of using LyX. I have
a set of screenshots saved in .png format. One was inserted in a figure
float a while ago, and I can change the clipping values to fit. The newer

where to look for the reason.

  Found the solution. Still don't know why the problem arose, but I now know
how to avoid it: close xv between screen captures.

  Why this makes a difference I've no idea. But, the first set of screen
captures were made without closing xv between them, and these would not
resize. So, it takes a bit more time now, but I get the results I need.
