Hi Stephan,
Yes, I upgraded to Yosemite. I found out that including the files works
when I start LyX from the console.

2014-11-07 Thread Andreas
Hello,
I recently upgraded to Lyx 2.1.2.1.
When I opened an existing file that has figures embedded as
PDFs, I get the error message "Error converting to loadable
format". Before the upgrade everything worked fine.
Do you have any ideas what the problem could be and how I could solve
it? Thanks for all suggestions.

The exe files are the ones you want, and the later ones are updates. So,
e.g., in this case, you'd want either LyX-2.0.6-Bundle-2.exe or
LyX-2.0.6-Installer-2.exe. I believe the former contains everything you
need to run LyX, whereas the latter downloads what it needs? I'm not sure.

I never know whether to uninstall the previous version. IIRC, in the

For what it's worth, my sense is that, on Windows, you're best off

Thanks for this. By following your instructions I managed to a) see the pdf
in lyx on screen and b) generate a DVI file. But the place where the pdf
should be is empty. If however I c) try to generate a pdf from pdflatex, lyx
just goes into an endless loop, from which I can only exit by forcing a
program quit.

Try putting the pdf file in the temp. folder of your lyx file. Long time
ago I found from the mailing list that lyx doesn't copy the pdf file
into the temp. directory automatically therefore you get an error. I
don't know if there was some other fix to this but I just copy the pdf
file that I want to attach manually in the temp. folder and this works.

If you have ghostscript version 8.70, then the issue is a bug in gs.

No PDF preview in LyX: "Error converting to loadable format"

Hi,

I allow myself to ask the lyx user list one more question before I

LyX gives me the message "Error converting to loadable format". I have
entered the Tools->Preferences

get around this problem or is it simply a bug?

What you see is a problem that ImageMagick is either misconfigured or cannot find Ghostscript.
ImageMagick 6.5.1-3 was released 5 days ago, so it seems that you have installed it manually.
Perhaps while doing this something went wrong, perhaps the ImageMagick version that is installed
with LyX still has some registry entries. But this is hard to say from here, so I propose to

- uninstall ImageMagick
- then uninstall Ghostscript
- then uninstall LyX _completely_ (leave Aspell as it is)
- finally reinstall LyX

It should then work.

Error converting to loadable format

Greetings

I've just upgraded from lyx 1.5.7-1 to 1.6.2-1. I am having problems to
visualize .eps figures inserted in the text. This is happening both with
figures already inserted in the text edited on 1.5.7-1, as well as for
new figures that I try to insert using 1.6.2-1. Inside the Graphics box,
I get the name of the .eps file and below it the message:

Error converting to loadable format

The problem is only with picture visualization in the lyx GUI. If I
generate a pdf file, the pictures do appear in the generated pdf.

Some system configuration info:

Re: Error converting to loadable format for EPS

2009-03-30 Thread Anders Host-Madsen
I have the same problem. However, only with SOME eps files.
In my case EPS files generated by Matlab just don't show in LyX,
but those from some other sources do show in LyX (for example
those in the user guide).

My only workaround has been to convert the EPS into PDF manually
(in OS X just use preview). If you need to export as LaTeX/eps, you can
just export as pdflatex, but compile with plain latex (if you export
as plain latex, LyX will try to convert the PDF files back to
EPS and overwrite the original files).

As far as I can tell this only applies to EPS, and PNG/JPG work fine.

On both systems, for 1.5.6, the EPS preview worked well.

There is no problem viewing the document in DVI or PDF, and the output
looks great.

I looked into this somewhat, and think it's likely an issue with the
versions of ghostscript and imagemagick included in the
alt-installer--or their lack thereof. Neither program was installed
with the alt-installer, and simply copying the two directories from an
older install did not fix the problem. I do have both programs
installed elsewhere on my system, though this wasn't a problem with the
1.5.6. installer.
This happens with the small installer. I tried running the complete
installer, even uninstalling my existing MikTeX 2.7 installation. But
that installer fails after installing MikTeX for some reason.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a ready workaround? This is
really mostly an inconvenience, but having the figures shown in the lyx

Do you have the bin directories for GS and IM on your system command
path in XP (and whatever the analog is called in OS/X)? If not, you
might try adding them to the command path and then
reconfiguring/restarting LyX.

Then the installation is completely broken. I recommend to reinstall LyX. Assure that you have admin

If this doesn't help, you may try to install LyX using the complete variant of

When using this

- assure that you have admin priviledges
- uninstall the existing LyX
- uninstall MiKTeX completely (use the "tidy up thoroughly" option in the

- uninstall ImageMagick
- uninstall Ghostscript
- open an internet connection
- install LyX

This assures that you have a clean system.

This problem can occur when you are using incompatible versions of
Ghostscript and ImageMagick.

You can do this to fix:

- either update the programs to the latest versions of the programs

Then check if the paths to the programs are correct in LyX'S menu

First question: does /Users/max/Desktop/TWI_Sensor.eps exist? (You
didn't specify your OS. If it's pretty much anything other than
Windows, keep in mind that paths are case-sensitive.)

Second question: if the file exists, does the account under which you're

eps is a natural format for dvipdfm so with the document open
in LyX did you try View -> Dvipdfm? That should work on any
well-formed .eps file, but dvipdfm doesn't do other formats.

pdflatex naturally does other formats than .eps and "convert"
from Imagemagick is called when pdflatex is chosen as your
viewing mode when there is an included .eps image in the .lyx
file needing conversion. I think you chose to view with pdflatex.

So I suggest seeing if all the .eps images load using dvipdfm.
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=lyx-users&r=1&w=2 is the best
mailing list archive to search for solutions. Probably one
can convert the recalcitrant eps file to .pdf with ps2pdf and
then pdflatex should work. Sometime the eps file is malformed.

Andre, thanks a lot for the quick answer, which proved successful.
$PATH issue turned out true, although I had logged out and in.
But setting .MacOSX/environment.plist's PATH to the shell's path
solved the problem.

The interesting thing now is, even after deleting that PATH from
envrionment.plist (and logging out/in and reconfiguring LyX etc.),
the pics show up fine. It appears that LyX just need the appropriate
setting once, after which it finds the "convert" command fine..
Weird...

Anyway, thanks again for saving my day! (or what remains of it :-)

"error converting to loadable format" on lyx 1.3.5 WinXP

2005-02-16 Thread Miki Dovrat
Hi,

My lyx for windows does not display graphics in the editor window (they come
out OK in the dvi). I get the error message "error converting to loadable
format".

This happens with eps, tiff and gif (my Linux lyx has no problems with these
graphics) while bmp and jpg work OK.

I have checked that "sh" and "convert" are in the path.
Below is the relevant output from lyx -dbg graphics, after which I attach a
copy of the default convert script convertDefault.sh.

I have also typed the exact command in the command line and it FAILED, BUT
when I changed the output file to "ppm:c:/tmp/a.ppm" instead of the file in
the lyx tmp_dir the command works (the lyx tmp_dir existed while I tried
this).

Can anyone tell me what is going wrong and how do I proceed? How come the
jpg and bmp work?

thanks.

Ghostscript must be installed before Imagemagick. Otherwise imagemagick
will have problems to find it. (Ghostscript is needed to convert .pdf
and eps images.)
After reinstalling Ghostscript(use version AFPL 8.14 NOT version GPL
8.15) and then imagemagick, reconfigure LyX.

I have been trying to insert a graphic (an
.eps figure) for the first time. But when I insert the figure I get an
'error converting to loadable format'. This is the same message I get
for the figures in my user guide.
That is the problem described above. If it won't work after reinstalling
Ghostscript, start LyX from a command line with
lyx -dbg 3
to get some useful background informations and post them again on this list.

I have tried to change the converters but to no success. Initially there
was no eps converter on my list. I have added eps to png with the
converter 'my_ps2png $$i $$o' modify, save, reconfigure etc but to no
avail.
DON'T define own converters on LyXWin! This causes only troubles because
there are some ugly bugs in LyXWin. Use only the predefined converters.
For all other image formats, LyX uses a script ConverDefault.sh that
calls Imagemagick to convert them.

Technically, you shouldn't *need* ImageMagick. See here for how loading of
figures works in LyX:

http://wiki.lyx.org/pmwiki.php/LyX/FiguresInLyX

Practially, Windows users have reported problems when using anything other
than the default converter, convertDefault.sh, which is indeed a wrapper
for ImageMagick's 'convert' utility. If you decide to use this default,
then you should ensure that the 'correct' convert is called. I understand
that there is a system utility called 'convert' on Win32 boxes, so you
should ensure that the ImageMagick directory is the first entry in your
PATH.

As for your specific problems using your specialised converter,
my_pstopng... I wish I could help more than I can. As I say, other Windows
users have reported problems using anything other than convertDefault.sh.
I have no idea why. In truth, I'm baffled by these reports.

Does your script get called? Add
echo "Hi, my_pstopng here!"
as the first line of your script, just to check.

Win32 qt LyX 1.3.2; jpg eps error converting to loadable format

2003-07-06 Thread Jorgen Johansson
Hello,

I installed the Win32 qt LyX 1.3.2 and it is fast (compared to the cygwin
version 1.3.0).
I have a problem with on-screen images. png files are displayed, but jpg
and eps are not shown. I get the following error message displayed
instead of the images "error converting to loadable format". (The same
document displays fine in the 1.3.0 cygwin version)

I ran "lyx -dbg 3" and things seem normal. When the "error converting to
loadable format" message appears in the image I expected to see some
error meassage in the command window, but nothing appears.

If someone could point me in the right direction to solve this I would
appreciate it very much.
Do I need to set some conversion parameters for the images?

(If I get the native qt version to work as nicely as the cygwin version
I think I can start convincing people around me to learn lyx/latex
(including my professor). )

Thanks for a great software.

jorgen

Thanks Andre, that was just it. I had another script called also 'convert' in
/usr/local/bin in the machine at home that was fired first. I've renamed it
and now everything works allright.

I don't think so. I have several Gb free and I have cleaned the /tmp directory
also to no avail.

Luis,

Just an idea: Could it be that the free disk space on the system at
your home? matbe the user's disk usage quota?

Error converting to loadable format

2003-01-21 Thread Luis Angel Fernández Cuadrado
Hi all,

I'm faced to a mistery. I have 2 Linux systems, one at work and the other at
home. Both are SuSE 8.0 and both have Ghostscript 6.53, xforms 0.89 and
ImageMagick 5.4.2. In both I have compiled and installed LyX 1.2.2 from the
sources. In both I can see included .jpg figures. However, in the one at work
I can see the included .eps figures while in the one at home I constantly get
'Error converting to loadable format' and the figure won't display in LyX.

Which puzzles me most is that recently I installed LyX version 1.3.0pre2 with
the qt frontend (which, by the way, looks great and has compiled and it's
been working so far without hassle) and the same thing happens: I can see the
.eps's in the system at work but not in the system at home.

I'd like to hear suggestions so as to what to check and get the damm thing
working.

Thanks.

Hmm. No ideas about this problem.

This is a different error message than I was receiving. However, the
memory issue suggests to me that there might be something wrong with your
temp directory. This is where LyX stores the images it converts to its
native format. You can set this directory in
Edit->Preferences->Inputs->Paths. Be sure that you have permission to
write in the temp directory and that the device holding the temp directory
is not full.

Conversion looks ok, but page isn't written, suggesting access problems to
temp directory

I'm using xforms-0.88 and that works fine. I've seen other postings with
0.89 who have no problems.

Lyx 1.2 figure "Error converting to loadable format"

2002-06-12 Thread Matt Brennan

A stumble in upgrading to Lyx 1.2.0:

Figures are not rendered within LyX. Instead, I merely get a message
"Error converting to loadable format".

Runnign 'lyx -dbg graphics' and then opening the LyX User's Guide and then
scrolling to the section on figures yields:

Attempting to convert image file: /usr/share/lyx/doc/mobius.eps
with recognised extension: eps.
Scanstring: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
Recognised Fileformat: eps
Scanstring: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
Recognised Fileformat: eps
The file contains eps format data.
update:: no BoundingBox
Scanstring: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
Recognised Fileformat: eps
Scanstring: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
Recognised Fileformat: eps
Scanstring: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
Recognised Fileformat: eps
Attempting to convert image file: /usr/share/lyx/doc/escher-lsd.eps
with recognised extension: eps.
Scanstring: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
Recognised Fileformat: eps
Scanstring: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
Recognised Fileformat: eps
The file contains eps format data.

I'm running RH 7.2, ImageMagik 5.3.8, and xforms 0.88.1-1

I'll echo Rudolph Pienaar that the "Fullscreen preview" button on the
figure popup is a feature from v. 1.1 that I will miss in 1.2.

Thanks,

Matt

(I apologize for not continuing the thread "images in pre-1.2.0 LyX
docs" which begins to address this problem. I'm new to the user list and
couldn't figure out how to perpetuate a thread to a message I hadn't
received.)
