Well first thanks for all your replies. I appreciate it.

I managed to get an extension regarding my report till next week thought with
additional reports to write. I did the most obvious solution & thats using
pencil, paper & a scanner. I just installed Dia & will try it tomorrow
hopefully. It seems user-friendly, but in case do you suggest any guide or help
file or is the documentation enough ?

By the way, it seems it doesn't contains any sheets for physics besides
"circuit" & "ChemEng". Can you help in this please as I have other labs soon
enough in Mechanics & Thermodynamics & Atomic physics?

  thanks

  Sincerely Yours,

As others have suggested...
for low learning curve: stencil sets and pen/paper + a scanner
for quick but limited computer aided drawing including circuits: dia [can
export to TeX with
pstricks or one of the image formats]

for computer aided schematics (2D circuit diagrams): gschem from the gEDA
set of tools [output to an
image format]
under RHEL/CentOS after you have enabled the EPEL repository it is only a
`yum install geda-gschem`
away. I also suggest installing geda-docs.
AFAIK it is also in fedora in these packages.
It took a couple of hours to get fairly comfortable with it for me, but I
had not used a circuit
editor before, only DIA and a couple of CAD programs.

Bob,

In line with Rob's suggestion, I just checked Xfig's capabilities, and
they appear to be quite substantial. A document link to something
addressing both Xfig and its use in drawing circuits is the following:

http://users.skynet.be/hugocoolens/linux/xfig-howto.pdf

Xfig has the electrical libraries built into it.

Once done, you export the result to an eps figure and import it into
LyX.

The only question is whether you know Xfig or not. It is fairly easy to
do basic stuff.

Good luck!

You can try xcircuitI use it with LyX with good results.

LTSpice is also pretty good fand can export to EPS, LTSpice is free from
Linear Technology.

there is support for external dia diagrams in case you want use dia.
i remember there was some support for circuits.

2010-07-15 Thread Rob Oakes
Hi Bob,

The best way to create specific types of drawings for a LyX document is to use
a program designed for that purpose (like a circuit diagram editor) and then
exporting to an appropriate image format (PDF, PNG, JPEG, etc.). There may be
LaTeX packages that can draw circuit diagrams (I wouldn't know, not my cup of
tea), but the learning curve associated with those packages is far too steep to
mount by your deadline.

Better to use what you know (even if that's stencil sets and pen/paper + a
scanner), then to try and reinvent the wheel on a deadline. Once the image is
created, you can then add it to a document and use a float to add a caption.

Cheers,

Rob

Help: Newbie writing a report- Help in drawing diagrams particularly circuits

2010-07-15 Thread BOB Merhebi
Hello,

I am a newbie to LyX. I searched most manuals & wikis but could find nothing
about drawing diagrams (physics related). I am in urgent need of help as I
am writing a reports for my physics labs which are due in less than 24 hrs.
I particularly need to draw electrical ciruits.

You help is appreciated
thx
