Here is a copy of what I mailed to John yesterday: :-)

This was already discussed in a thread some days ago.
You should look at the archives for the full thing.
Alll options are about creating PostScript (which is what LaTeX is
supposed to do
after all) and then converting it to PDF. Have a look at Acrobat
Distiller , or
at ghostscript (free!) ...
