I don't see anything obvious. The way to proceed is to export to LaTeX
and run everything manually. Or, if you like, send me the LyX file and
bib file, and I'll do it here. Certainly, from this log, it's clear that
you have an empty bbl file, which means either bibtex didn't get run for
some reason or else it aborted with an error.

Post the .bib file first. In particular, run iconv against it to make

Also, does the LaTeX log show any error messages relating to the missing

If I create a .bib file with those two references and use it in LyX, I can see
both references. Don't know where is the problem.
I use JabRef 2.3.1 to create my .bib file and have not experienced any problem

(There were 2 error messages)

I was using the .bst file authordate1, but I have tried using other .bst
files (naturemag, authordate2) with the same result.

Because the message said it was missing a style file, I tried using a
different style file, one that was not part of the default Lyx installation
(the same .bst files, authordate1, harvard, agsm). DOING THIS SOLVED THE
PROBLEM.

I explored the /usr/share/texmf-texlive/bibtex/bst folder, which is where I
assume the .bst files are located upon installation. I noticed many were
missing (the ones I had a problem with initially).

However, I'm perplexed as to why the .bst files included in the Lyx
installation have disappeared. How to I return it back to its "original"
state? Can I put the bst files I've downloaded from CTAN and elsewhere into
the usr/.../bst folder, and if so, under which subdirectory (ams, babelbib,
base, index, natbib)? Why have the Lyx bst files disappeared?

LyX itself doesn't install any .bst files. Your distribution might, or
maybe some Mac thing does, but LyX itself doesn't. Anyway, yes, you can
put .bst files into the .../bst folder, and it doesn't really matter
where they go. But a better solution is to create a "local TeX tree" and
put them there. There are instructions for how to do this, relating to
class files, in the Customization manual.

Basically, you want to find the file texmf.cnf and then, in that file,
find the line that declares the variable TEXMFHOME. This will tell you
where TeX expects to find your local tree. In my case, it's
$HOME/texmf/. So you create that directory and then---this is very, very
important---mirror the structure underneath your MAIN TeX directory,
which in your case is /usr/share/texmf-texlive/. So you'd want to create
$HOME/texmf/bibtex/bst/, and put your bst files there. You can create
subdirectories within .../bst/ as you wish. Always make sure to run
texhash after you put new stuff there, though. The advantage to doing it
this way, of course, is that you don't have to mess with the system
directories, which means the stuff you add from CTAN or stuff you write
yourself won't get over-written on upgrades.

You can also run:
kpsepath bst
to see where TeX will look for bst files, etc.

LyX doesn't install .bst or .cls or anything TeX related. It is solely
a frontend for TeX. In your case it is texlive that is installing
these files.

When you upgraded Ubuntu it more than likely overwrote your /usr/share
folder deleting all the files and putting the more 'up-to-date' files,
back into:

/usr/share/texmf-texlive/bibtex/bst

I'm pretty sure this is a system folder, hence it will be "upgraded"
when the system packages are "upgraded". You should not be putting
your personal .bst files in a 'system' folder. They should be put in a
'local' folder such as /usr/local/ or wherever Ubuntu stores the local
texmf folder. There should also be a ~/.texmf-var folder, which is
where I put my custom .bst and .cls files. I know my home folder will
not be touched during upgrades or reinstalls, etc. Especially since I
have /home on a separate partition :-}.

Cheers,
/Bob

In a terminal, run 'pdflatex CONS6017-Essay.tex', which should produce a
file with extension .aux. Then run 'bibtex CONS6017-Essay', then
'pdflatex CONS6017-Essay.tex' again.

I've also checked the Lyx log in my tmp folder, and fould that it says
"LaTeX Warning: There were undefined references.".

This is not entirely surprising. The LaTeX/BibTeX combination requires
multiple passes. On the first LaTeX pass, an auxiliary file is
generated with information about required citations. BibTeX uses that
file and the .bib bibliography file to create a file of stuff to insert
in the document (.bbl). The initial LaTeX pass flags all references as
undefined. On the second LaTeX pass, it uses the .bbl file to fix
things up.

I'm not sure if this will be helpful, but I've included both the exported
.tex file, the tmp .log file, and the PDF output as an attachment here.

Please note that I have changed nothing in my setup of Lyx since changing to
Ubuntu 8.04. I've had pretty much the same document settings (usually at
Natbib, but sometimes Jurabib), and usually the same bst files (usually the
ones included in Lyx, such as naturemag or author-date).

Between the last time you successfully used the JabRef file and now, did
you edit anything in the JabRef (.bib) file? Frequently something gets
broken in a .bib file -- either a syntactically incorrect entry is
produced, or a character from an encoding that does not match the
document is inserted -- and the sequence above breaks down.

Export the document to LaTeX and try compiling it manually. Report the
error messages. It sounds to me as if either LyX or LaTeX isn't finding
the .bib file, and there are various reasons this can happen.

This sounds like it's going to be hard to diagnose and a little more
information would be helpful. Have you tried multiple .bib files? Are
you using the default bibliography manager or natbib or jurabib or
something else? What .bst file are you trying to use? Maybe you could
send a minimal example to the list for verification or diagnoses?

Lyx 1.5.3 not showing references from Jabref 2.3.1

2008-05-28 Thread vu

Hi All,

I'm using Lyx 1.5.3 and Jabref 2.3.1 on Ubuntu 8.04.

I have been using Lyx for about 2 years now (since Ubuntu 6.04) and have
very successfully written dozens of documents using Lyx, along with
Pybliogapher and Jabref.

However, since upgrading to Ubuntu 8.04 (fresh installation from CD), Lyx
has not functioned properly. I can insert a bibliography, and I can insert
references from that bib file. However, when I view PDF (or PS or DVI), the
references show up as "[?]", and there is no bibliography.

All of my settings are "correct", and I've tried it with multiple
combinations of document settings and bibliography settings.

As I mentioned earlier, I've written many documents with Lyx, so I'm
relatively familiar with the it. I love it, I can't live without it.

Can anyone help? What's going on? I have a big essay due soon, so it's
really bad timing!

Thanks in advance.
