Thanks, Riki, I started it again this morning after restarting my PC,

I guess, that there were two things which gave the trouble: "./" in

and the restart of the PC, which might have been done also by a

OK, so try starting LyX from a terminal. Send me any error messages.
Also, do "ls -l /home/we/" after you start LyX and while it is running.

Verify that your preferences file (probably at
$HOME/.lyx/preferences) contains something like:

\serverpipe "/home/we/lyxpipe"

If not, you may have "applied" the preferences but not "saved" them,
so do that again. (It sounds as if JabRef is correctly configured.)
Try it again. Note that you will have to restart LyX to have the
pipe created. It won't do it right after you save the preferences.

If that doesn't work, then start LyX from a terminal and send me any
error message you see.

Now, the crucial thing: Do NOT create ANY files. Just do what I
just said. The pipes are created automatically by LyX itself when
it starts (assuming you have defined a location for the pipes, as
above). You can verify this by looking in your home directory
after you start LyX. There should be two pipes, lyxpipe.in and
lyxpipe.out. Here's what mine looks like:

/home/rikiheck/ > ls -al tmp/
total 12
drwxrwxr-x   3 rikiheck rikiheck 4096 Jul 26 12:11 .
drwxr-xr-x. 33 rikiheck rikiheck 4096 Jul 26 12:10 ..

prw---   1 rikiheck rikiheck    0 Jul 26 12:11 .lyxpipe.out

(My pipes are in a different place and are named differently.)

Let me know if that works.

Riki
Riki helped me in figuring out why my lyxpipe for jabref-LyX did not
work. I send the essentials of this private mail exchange which boils
down to

two things which gave the trouble:

 "./" in /.lyx/preferences/serverpipe
which I changed to  "/home/we/lyxpipe"

and the restart of the PC, which might have been done also by a
reconfigure (?).

I have compiled lyx again:

LyX Version 2.3.0

(Samstag, 24. Februar 2018)

Systemverzeichnis: /usr/local/share/lyx/

Benutzerverzeichnis: ~/.lyx/

Qt-Version (Laufzeit): 4.8.7

Qt-Version (bei Erstellung): 4.8.7

In the user directory ~/.lyx/ all directories except the first 2 (bind,
cache) are empty. I guess, this shouldn't be so. I used .configure,
make, and sudo make install. What might have been gone wrong?

No. You need to tell LyX (in the preferences) where you want the pipes
to be, and
then LyX will create the pipes when it starts. You also need to tell
JabRef where
the pipes are. LyX needs to know where to read data from; JabRef needs
to know
where to write it to. You can use ~/.lyx/.lyxpipe if you like, which I
guess counts
as a default, or you can put the pipe elsewhere. It doesn't matter.

These are not normal files but "named pipes", for which see
 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Named_pipe
This is one of many forms of inter-process communication.

Thanks to all who helped me to understand the lyx-pipe business. I
prefer to push the citations into lyx from Jabref instead of selecting
it inside lyx from the bib file.

changed the LyX pipe path (back) to ~/.lyxpipe, which is the default LyZ
setting. You could change LyZ alternatively of course.

Point being I think it's simply down to the pipe file path matching
correctly.

actually the problem might be that we changed some lfuns for inserting

Not sure with SVN, but with lyx 2b1 release lyz works almost fine. The only
problem I had was that the latest lyz cannot create a bibtex record by itself,
but that seems more like a lyz/firefox related problem. If I touch a .bib file
manually, then lyz can port citations perfectly.

LyZ: lyxpipe changes in 2.0?

2010-12-02 Thread Jose Quesada
Hi,

I use the LyZ FF addon to insert zotero references:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/56806/
(btw, highly recommended!)

I -think- it was working before on 2.0 svn, but I may be misremembering and
it might have been 1.6...
In any case one obvious problem seems to be that in LyZ preferences the
default lyxpipe is:

/home/user/.lyx/lyxpipe

But looking for that file, I realized I have instead:
/home/user/.lyx/lyxpipe.in
/home/user/.lyx/lyxpipe.out

I never cared to look for this before because it worked, it may have always
been like that...
Have there been changes on the way lyx uses lyxpipes?
Could this be the reason it doesn't work? In any case, it could be a problem
on the LyZ side of course. Here's a hint in that direction:
http://www.klubko.net/wp/?page_id=945
Now I have to port it to new Zotero API, but I just have so little time to
look into it.

This single addon makes lyx an order of magnitude more useful to me. Please
let me know what I can do to help. Now that 2.0 is approaching rc, it'd be
nice to have it working by then.

Best,

PS: looks like the entire LyZ architecture is a bit quirky: After much
opening and closing of programs I learned that I must open firefox *after*
have my document is opened in Lyx. This was the critical step that I missed.
Thanks again for writing this extremely useful program.

newbie question: output and get lyxpipe, and extra field codes

2008-09-11 Thread Russell J. Wilson
Just in first days of trying to learn to use JabRef/Lyx on Windows Vista
with Word 2007.
Trying to output and I get the error message that says ensure lyx is running
(it is) and that the lyxpipe is valid (don't know how to do that).

Secondly, have downloaded some references from medline, and when I try to
save it says:

Error in field 'institution': The # character is not allowed in BibTeX
fields.
In JabRef, use pairs of # characters to indicate a string.
Note that the entry causing the problem has been selected.

Correct the entry, and reopen editor to display/edit source.

But I can't find the institution field, where's it hidden

the entry screen for optional fields for example doesn't list it, and it's
not scrollable, so ???

AFAIK piping doesn't work with Windows. At least, it doesn't seem to
work with Win XP, and I've not heard anything to the effect that it
works with Vista.

Maybe you're on the wrong entry? Some entry types (e.g. Techreport)
have an institution field (it's in the Required fields tab in the case
of Techreport) and some (e.g. Article) do not. I think you can add
Institution to something like Article using Options - Customize entry
types, but unless Medline is adding institutions to articles, books etc.
you shouldn't have to. (I don't use Medline, so I have no idea about
this.)

You can peek into the .bib file using Notepad or any text file
viewer/editor, locate the # character, see what entry it's in and
whether that entry has an Institution field. Then highlight the entry
in JabRef and, if there's no Institution field, add it using the
customization menu.

LyX push from JabRef - lyxpipe error

2008-03-20 Thread kaptan
I am using JabRef 2.3.1 and Lyx 1.5 on Windows 2000
When I push bibliography entries to LyX I get an error in JabRef

Error: verify that Lyx is running and that the lyxpipe is valid [C:\Documents
and Settings\Administrator\.lyx/lyxpipe]

I have no .lyx directory in the above path regardless of whether I install
LyX for current user or all users.

The push works for pushing to LatexEditor but not Lyx.

Can anyone help me please?

The lyxpipe doesn't work on Windows. The existing code is *nix specific.
Code could be written that would work on Windows, but there aren't a lot

Inserting graphics via lyxpipe

2007-08-31 Thread David Rosenberg
Hi -- I'd like to be able to insert graphics using the lyx server, but
I'm not sure whether there are LFUN's that I need. I can do
inset-insert graphics and dialog-show-new-inset graphics, but I
don't know how to specify the name of the file I'd like to insert.
e.g. I wish I could do
inset-insert graphics file=/home/user/blah.png
In general, it'd be great if it were possible to pop up a dialog via
the server, with a bunch of options set via extra arguments. e.g:
dialog-show-new-inset graphics file=/home/user/blah.png
scale-graphics=true scale-graphics-value=80
The point of this is I want to write a shell script that let's me
take a screen shot, save it to a file, and automatically insert this
file as a graphic into the current lyx buffer.

Thanks,
David

lyxpipe, jabref and windows with LyX 1.5.1

2007-08-30 Thread S. Teinturier

Hi everyone!

I've installed Lyx 1.5.1 and JabRef 2.3b (win XP SP1).

When I try to insert a citation from JabRef to LyX document, through the
direct icon LyX in JabRef, an error message appears about LyxPipe.

Is the following message (2007-01-01, LyX 1.4.3-5 and JabRef 2.2b) still
valid for the LyX 1.5.1???

You cannot use this feature on windows, since the pipe is implemented using

UNIX specific functions that are not available on windows.

It doesn't work either using the c-k function (the final dvi document
has a \cite{BLABLAXXX}).

So, if I want to use my biblio.bib with LyX and JabRef (and I want to!)
I have first to 'insert' the bibliography in the LyX repertories, and
then using the LyX tool Insert Citation... ??

Thanks for your help,

Sara

Pushing citations via lyxpipe from JabRef on Ubuntu

Hello,

Following the hint from

I tried to insert a insert a citations via lyxpipe from JabRef.

JabRef gives me the following error when trying to push a citation into
pipe:

Error: Verify that Lyx is running and that the lyxpipe is valid.
[/home/user/lyxpipe]

I checked into that /home/user/lyxpipe directory end it doesn't exist.

My questions:
1) How do I create a valid lyxpipe?
2) Shouldn't that pipe automatically created when one starts Lyx for the
first time? (this must then be a fault of the Ubuntu package)

Thanks for your help,

named pipes support will be eventually discontinued.

pushing references to LyX with lyxpipe

2006-05-02 Thread Stacia Hartleben

Hi, I use Jabref and there is an option to push to LyX using
lyxpipe? Does this work on windows? If not can it be made to work in
other versions of LyX.

It works fine under LyX on Linux. Great, actually. The problem here is
that there are no named pipes under Windows, which is what LyX uses to
communicate with the outside world. (These are things that look like
files but aren't really files at all: Programs can write into them and
other programs can then read out of them, but it's all happening without
any actual storage.) All you have to do to get this working is configure
the location of the pipe in LyX (Preferences Paths Lyxpipe) and in
JabRef (Options Prefs External Programs Path to LyX Pipe).
Obviously, you need to configure them the same! Pybliographer has a
similar facility.

There's lots of useful stuff you can do with this pipe. I'll send
another message illustrating.

I disagree with you on that one. See
