i'm just fighting the same problem. friend pointed me to baposter class. it
took half day to configure lyx so it recognize this class and setup bit ugly
preamble and opening erts, but once it is setup it is sweet sweet sweet!

if one has interest to do nifty graphical things i would rather use eg corel,
but if you dont have much time and need reasonble good output this is a really
nice package.

next poster could be done very quickly from now on...

the new boxes are defined by trivial erts which states column, row and relative
position (above, below) to already defined boxes and possible spanning, eg.
\headerbox{Box title}{name=box2,column=1,below=box1,span=2}{

everything after this ert is just normal lyxing, so basically copypaste
from your paper...

the site is here:

i even though we can add this layout plus some example poster to manuals in
lyx. then i would need some help from experienced TeXers though, since my
layout/preamble/erts work but are one big mess :)

one drawback is is that you need to switch to texlive from tetex if you are
still on it. i have tried to make this switch on one of my boxes and now
studying
the damages on the docs i'm currently working. except that ToC got insane for
longer section names i havent find much other problems so far. (btw any
hints from others for what should i check or how to turn back ToC entries to
be again multiline for a longer titles?)

another issue is small glitch with updating output pdf/postcript. i suspect
lyx wrongly parses latex log output and doesn't run latex enough times,
which results in losing poster background. i havent time to track this down
yet, but there is easy workaround if you want complete rebuild of course :)

After reading that, it sounds like Scribus is the ideal tool for posters. It
sounds great for 8.5x11 flyers, and for folding brochures. And yes, most
short newsletters are extremely fine tuned, so it sounds great for those too.

You know what else it sounds great for -- laying out the cover of an eBook.
I've been using Inkscape for that, but I might try Scribus just for fun.

I have to disagree in this debate. I have found lyx a *superb* tool for making
scientific posters! It gives a uniform look, as well as dealing with the proper
formatting of legends and cross-references. Plus, it properly formats my bibtex
references and places everything evenly distributed on an A0 layout. If
information overflows, it means I have to reorganise my poster, not
finger-paint layouts to shoe-horn items into the poster (that probably
shouldn't be there anyway for the requirements of a poster).

It also means that I can re-use text and graphics from talks and papers that
I've written in lyx.

I use sciposter.cls, sectionbox.sty, multicol.sty and wallpaper.sty to generate
posters with multiple columns, sectioned boxes and a background. I generate my
plots with R and graphics with inkscape.

On the other hand, I end up spending much more time fiddling about
finger-painting with tools like scribus.

This might be due to a different sort of poster. I wouldn't recommend LyX

Beeing able to re-use parts of the article in the conference proceedings

sciposter latex for A0 posters in LyX

2007-11-21 Thread obregonmateo
I struggled with the a0poster latex packages and the .layout files that people
so kindly posted here, but I found them very hard to work with.

I looked for other options and found the sciposter package, together with
sectionbox, multicol and wallpaper latex packages. I found these much easier
to work with, to get a decent A0 landscape poster with 5 columns and nice
boxes of white text and graphics on top of a colourful background. I used the
a0poster layout to start with, and added various preambles, and I managed to
get my references typed in a box in APA format too.

Could I recommend that a proper layout be added to lyx for this? My knowledge
of .layout files is very limited.

Mateo.

Should I use minipages and fixed floats for graphics and tables, or, should
I use columns? Any special handling of fonts? What about background
 decorations or watermarks?

Or, should I design a one-page (A4) landscape APA article layout and use a
tool like psa4toa0.sh to enlarge it?

Anyone have an example a0poster that they produced with LyX that they could
 share?

 Thanks.

A0 posters in LyX

2007-11-16 Thread obregonmateo
I've found several references through Google search on how to create an
a0poster.layout, but I haven't found any tips on what LyX tools to use to
create a poster.

Should I use minipages and fixed floats for graphics and tables, or, should I
use columns? Any special handling of fonts? What about background decorations
or watermarks?

Or, should I design a one-page (A4) landscape APA article layout and use a
tool like psa4toa0.sh to enlarge it?

Anyone have an example a0poster that they produced with LyX that they could
share?

Thanks.

Mateo.

 screen layout.

I haven't used beamer, but I do use powerdot -- a similar class -- on a
regular basis, and I can see the problem with fonts.

If you have a relatively large amount of text, and relatively few figures
(even if they are fairly large) you might get good results with a very
straightforward approach using article class and the multicol package to put
perhaps three columns onto a single landscape page. With this method I'd put
the figures and tables in floats and let LaTeX figure out where to put
them -- but I'd also expect to waste a lot of time juggling margins, font
sizes and spacing to fill the page without overflowing it.

Mateo,

Last time I had a poster paper to present I spent quite a while researching
the possibilities using LyX, and ended up using Scribus. But the best
solution depends on exactly what you want to put on the poster. The more
complicated it gets, and the more graphics you want to use, the harder it
becomes to use LyX (or LaTeX).

No matter what software you use, there is a lot to be said for generating the
poster at a manageable size such as A4, then enlarging it at the plotting
stage. That way you don't put things in that are too small to be viewed
properly on the poster when it is displayed. My posters are plotted using
SDI plotting software which allows any desired scaling as the poster is sent
to the plotter, so no specific tool is needed to enlarge it. Many other
printer and plotter drivers can do the same.

If I did use LyX, I would most likely use minipages to control layout -- but
even with them, it's hard to get things looking right.

There is another poster package described at

I have used it with lyx, but it does require a bit of
ERT (the title, authors, number of columns). There is also
ERT (\vspace) to tweak the position of parts of the
poster. This package does not look too complicated and
it should be possible to make a lyx document layout

identical to article.layout except for the second
which is changed to:

#  \DeclareLaTeXClass{Poster (A0)}

I just had a look at the package -- looks great.
However, it is quite complex (using the picture environment, ...)
so I suppose incorporating into lyx would be a _huge_
effort (if possible at all, remember, even a "plain"
twocollumn will only show up in the output but not in lyx.)

Therefore, if you are familiar with latex, I would recommend to
export your files as latex and incorporate into the example
with a "normal" text editor.

(Although I know from my own experience that for
designing a poster a WYSIWYG (or WYSIWYM) editor would be a
great help. Thus I would be very pleased if someone of the lyx-gurus on
the list could prove me false.)

There is another poster package described at
  <http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/~robert/posters.html>.
I have used it with lyx, but it does require a bit of
ERT (the title, authors, number of columns). There is also
ERT (\vspace) to tweak the position of parts of the
poster. This package does not look too complicated and
it should be possible to make a lyx document layout
based on it. For now, I use a layout file that is
identical to article.layout except for the second
which is changed to:

#  \DeclareLaTeXClass{Poster (A0)}

Posters in Lyx?

2000-09-28 Thread José Luis Gómez Dans

Hi!
First of all, my apologies if this e-mail starts running amok
around the lists server as I have had some problems subscribing. I would
appreciate any replies to be CCd to me in case the subscription was not
succesful.

Enough ranting. I have to do a poster, and I want to include a
couple of papers I have written in lyx in the past, so as to avoid
re-doing the whole thing again. I have found a latex poster package with
a poster example on the web. This looks _very sexy_, and I thought I
might want to use the example document, import it into lyx (it's a tex
file), and then copy paste my own stuff. I have tried to relyx it, but
relyx gives the following error:

reLyX, the LaTeX to LyX translator. Revision date 1999/09/27
Reading LaTeX command syntax
(example.tex: Splitting Preamble
Creating LyX preamble
Cannot find layout file aastexposter.layout in dir(s) /home/jgomez/.lyx/layouts
/usr/X11R6/share/lyx/layouts at /usr/X11R6/share/lyx/reLyX/ReadCommands.pm line 267,
PREAMBLE chunk 71.
Exited due to fatal Error!

which is logical, as there's no lyx class supporting posters (am I
right? Please say no! :D). I'm at a bit of a loss here, and I don't
quite know how to continue. I might try to adjust the latex file on the
fly... In short, I haven't got a clue on what to do.

Has anyone have any success in doing posters with lyx? The
package I want to use does exactly what I want (no, I don't want to
stick all the foiltex printouts together!), and I found it in
http://fuse.pha.jhu.edu/~wolven/posters.html

Thanks for any help, (and CC or any replies, as said
above, greatly appreciated!!)
