In you case, please try to reinstall LyX 1.5.4 using the official installer. I'll check what could 
be the problem.

I have installed and uninstalled the the whole package now for a couple of
times, albeit no success. Restarting the XP didn't help either. During the
installation I have accepted proposed (default) setting for LyX, MikTeX,
Jabber, etc.
One note still... The ImageMagick seems to be absent from the package, or at
least I am not able to find it in the Start-menu.

Could someone please help me and tell how to proceed? Should I switch to
1.5.3?

Have you tried the official installer in
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.5.4? I guess you do not need to use
the bundled version if you have miktex etc already installed.
