Problems with figures

2008-08-18 Thread JC Bustamante

Hi all,

I started using Lyx1.5.3 on Ubuntu 8.04, and I have two problems when trying
to put centered figures into a document. What I do is the following: Insert
- Floating object - Figure (sorry if the translation is not right), and
the Insert - Image, then browse and find my *.eps file.

First problem : the figure is not showed in the LyX window. Instead I obtain
a message converting to a readable format, (or something like that) and
then error in conversion. When I choose not to show the figure in the LyX
window I don't have this error. However, this is not that bad, since the
picture is o.k in the dvi, the ps and the pdf files. This problem does not
happens if I insert a .png file.

Second, and most important: The caption Figura 1 should be at the bottom
of the figure, and not at its left (see attached file).

Thanks

JC

Do you have Ghostscript and ImageMagick installed? LyX uses ImageMagick
to convert fig.eps to fig.ppm for display in the GUI, and for Postscript
and EPS files, ImageMagick will turn to Ghostscript for help.

Second, and most important: The caption Figura 1 should be at the

Actually, no, I don't see an attached file. Working blind, as it were,
all I can suggest is to make sure that the cursor is not in the caption
when you do Insert-Image. I always hit Enter in front of the caption
to create a new paragraph, and insert the image there. (You can use
the paragraph alignment dialog to center the image within the float.)

Thanks for your help. I tried to install ImageMagick once more and did

which section are they?

There must be a problem with Imagemagick, a program used by LyX to
convert the figures.

You could reinstall LyX using this installer:
http://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5117release_id=11320
(http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyXWinInstaller)

because this comes with the latest Imagemagick version.
! If you have another version of Imagemagick installed, uninstall it
first. !
The installer will check for installed Imagemagick versions, so if the
installer informs you that Imagemagick will be installed additionally
with LyX it should work.

1. Did the bundle installer install ImageMagick (or did you have it
already)?

2. Does ImageMagick work? (From a command prompt run

 convert logo: logo.gif
 display logo.gif

and see if the ImageMagick logo displays. If ImageMagick is not on your
system path, you may need to cd into its directory for this to work.)

3. Is Ghostscript installed? (ImageMagick needs Ghostscript to convert
Postscript and Encapsulated Postscript images.) Again assuming that
ImageMagick is on the command path, you can try opening a command prompt
in the LyX root\Resources\doc directory and run

 convert mobius.eps mobius.ppm

to see if ImageMagick can find Ghostscript.

4. Is ImageMagick on your system command path or on LyX's path prefix
(Tools-Preferences-Paths-PATH prefix)?

Hi Ana

Maybe you got a problem with the whitespaces in the path. I remember something
about the whitespace. Some progams ported to windows have problems when there
is a space in their path. maybe you want to check that.

I´ve started running the tutorials, and it worked nicely. Than, I tried to write my own article using a predefined style from my University. After a while, it worked ok too (I needed to adapt using Preamble and adding an ERT).

The argument to the python command is a directory, when it should be a

Other times when I tried to generate the DVI file, it occurs a different error. It seems the DVI file was generated wrongly and then the DVI viewer couldn´t open it correctly.

It seems odd that the error is inconsistent. Do you recall what the
other error messages were?

Despite this error message, I´ve got the DVI file following these steps:
  1) Export the LateX file (File-Import-Latex)
  2) Runnig Miktex on the generated Tex file and running the DVI viewer
(outside Lyx environment).

Do you have any idea what´s going on? I´ve tried to find any clue in LyX documentation but I didn´t find.

I´d like to do everything inside LyX environment. Could you help on this,

The first thing I would do is check the converter. In LyX, click on
Edit-Preferences-Converters. There should be an entry labeled
'DraftDVI-DVI'. Click on that and look at the entry in the Converter:
field. It should look like the following:

python $$s/scripts/clean_dvi.py $$i $$o

Does yours match that?

following error message:

  Cannot convert file

  Error while executing
  python "C:/Arquivos de programas/LyX/Resources/lyx"

The argument to the python command is a directory, when it should be a
file. I have not seen that error before, so I have no idea what caused it.

  1) Export the LateX file (File->Import->Latex)
  2) Runnig Miktex on the generated Tex file and running the DVI viewer
(outside Lyx environment).

Do you have any idea what´s going on? I´ve tried to find any clue in LyX documentation but I didn´t find.

I´d like to do everything inside LyX environment. Could you help on this,
please?

The first thing I would do is check the converter. In LyX, click on
Edit->Preferences->Converters. There should be an entry labeled
'DraftDVI->DVI'. Click on that and look at the entry in the Converter:
field. It should look like the following:

python $$s/scripts/clean_dvi.py $$i $$o

Does yours match that?
