For a new installation, LyX/LaTeX/TeX takes a while to generate fonts
for printing and display. Make sure there is no font generation activity
before concluding that nothing is happening.

No difference.   It is a new installation of both Linux and Lyx, and I tried
reinstalling everything but it didn't help.   I am just about to install the
latest release of Lyx.

what happens after an options->reconfigure with a restart of lyx?

Try a later release of Lyx. Version 1.1.5fix1 works fine on my Slackware
system.

1.1.4fix1) running on Suse 6.4.   Lyx runs fine, but nothing happens when I
try to view dvi files.   When I try to export as dvi it exports as tex.
Initially I thought is was a problem with printing as this doesn't work
either.   I have xdvi and dvips installed and they work fine on there own.
I use apsfilter for printing.
