One suggestion:
If you go to Preferences -> Look & Feel -> Display -> Mark end of paragraphs,
You can see your paragraph ends signs. If there is paragraph end, this
generates a space between your figures, equations and text etc …
Extra space may not be always due to new paragraph, but
