It's the Win32 version running on XP SP3. Is it somehow possible to see
the contents of the PATH variable while LyX is running (e.g. by
executing additional commands like 'echo $PATH') in the debug console?

I'm not sure how Windows works, but assuming a child process inherits
PATH, you could make a converter and put your echo command in there.

I tested adding the LyX PATH extension to the PATH variable and LyX
works fine now.
Unfortunately this results in cygwins's python version being no longer
accessible as LyX's python is being used now.
It's a workaround but i'd really like to make LyX add it's PATH prefix
as intended.

I noticed that the PATH variable is actually called 'Path' instead of
'PATH' on my WinXP machine. Maybe this matters...

What version of LyX is this? Win32 or cygwin? LyX is supposed to set the
path correctly when running.

My bad, didn't notice the option to enable verbose output. Seems like
you are right and it's a python problem or more precise a problem with
LyX calling Cygwin's Python (2.7.3) instead of LyX's own Python (2.7.5).
When i run the command in a terminal window using c:\Programme\Lyx
2.0\Python\python.exe instead of C:/cygwin/bin/python2.7.exe it succeeds.
Question remains how do i get LyX to use the right python.exe (the PATH

Can you open LyX from a terminal window (or check View > Messages) to see

ImageMagick and Ghostscript are present on the netbook. I can't see the

Well, previewing in pdf is not so long to wait for after all, so I just

Indeed. However a different one, so that

 Entering
 \usepackage{xkeyval}

does not help. (

In Debian/Ubuntu, polyglossia is at version 2009/01/25 v1.0.2
and has a bug described e.g. in
http://web.archiveorange.com/archive/v/tMRBZCv1fz60QnWYVKfO

  fortunately this particular problem is easy to fix: you have just to
  put braces around UTF-8 characters in last 4 \XeTeXinterchartoks rules.
  But unfortunately that's not all. If I compile a German document with
  shorthands, I am still getting erroneous results: for example, `
  instead of the expected opening quote results into the sequence ?`.
  This is because you are attempting to emulate shorthands using the
  \XeTeXinterchartoks primitive, which (according to the documentation)
  is intended just to insert something between two characters, but not to
  remove those characters from the output.

If editing gloss-german.ldf is not an option, the workaround is to export
the file from LyX and change the line

\setdefaultlanguage[babelshorthands=true]{german}

to

\setdefaultlanguage{german}

.

Polyglossia's babel shorthands are an experimental feature.
Does LyX use the babel shorthands anywhere? If not, please remove the
[babelshorthands=true] option from the LyX generated output.

A power user that wants to use babel shorthands in ERT can easily add the
line

\setdefaultlanguage[babelshorthands=true]{german}

in his/her LaTeX preamble.

 Does LyX use the babel shorthands anywhere? If not, please remove the
 [babelshorthands=true] option from the LyX generated output.

Ok, I'm still new to Linux. I tried to export the file from LyX and removed
babelshorthands but when I try reimport into LyX it doesn't seem to work.
Where would I find this gloss-german.ldf and what needs to be changed there?

Or would an update of texlive to the latest version fix the problem?
(not sure how to do it though).

Thanks so far,
Tao

Indeed. However a different one, so that

does not help.

\setdefaultlanguage[babelshorthands=true]{german}

to

\setdefaultlanguage{german}

.

Polyglossia's babel shorthands are an experimental feature.
Does LyX use the babel shorthands anywhere? If not, please remove the

A power user that wants to use babel shorthands in ERT can easily add the
line

\setdefaultlanguage[babelshorthands=true]{german}

in his/her LaTeX preamble.

You mean filename.doc.lyx? It opens in the converter mode, but no
encoding will fit (not even the Unicode ones).
However, Lyx 2.0 will open it without problems, so it means the
encoding should be correct.

When I tell the program to export the file as Lyx 1.6.x, it will be as
unreadable as the 2.0 file.

Hi guys,

Thank you Liviu, you were right I found out the MiKTeX that was

I assume you're on Windows. If so, then File Save as and then put it

 I am running Lyx 2.0 on Windows. I did as you suggested, saving the file in

 I had print screen the error message for your kind attention.

The screenshot is not very informative. Could you do the following:
- File New from template letter.lyx (double check the spelling of 'letter')
- View (pdflatex)
- If it still gives errors, please post Document LaTeX log.

Liviu

 When I was using Lyx1.6, I did not face this problem. My hard drive had
 crashed a few days back and I was only able to find Lyx 2.0 online.
 You help is very appreciated.
