as far as I can see, there is no way of silently tracking changes, i.e. 
whenever track changes
are enabled, they are shown in LyX - is this correct?

If yes, should I file a enhancement, i.e. would others be interested in this?

Yes - recording changes with the option that I can hide them in LyX and not 
only ion the output.
