This is because I use en_GB.UTF8. I don't see anyway to tell lyx to use a different locale but in my case it doesn't seem to have any adverse effects. Concerning locales, the situation will be different (hopefully much better) with lyx 1.5.2. Please report at this time if you have locale-related problems. JMarc

Thanks for all of these comments. Actually, I was able to resolve the issue by the inelegant means of changing 2 or 3 Greek words in the text back to transliterations. This is a temporary measure, but it makes the document work again. What wasn't clear to me from the message was that it related to a Greek character set I'll come back to the question of getting Greek in (I'm sure its very simple) at a later point. Thanks again, Declan

I don't think it's related, other than tangentially. Chapter 4 of Help - Customization talks a bit about locales and which environment variables to tweak. AFAIK, LyX is geared to using xx_XX codes for languages (e.g., en_GB if you like all those extra letters in your words). I don't know if setting an environment variable to en_GB.UTF8 will work; LyX might not recognize it. Being neither a Debian user nor a user of non-default locales, all I can suggest is the following. In lyx root/Resources/ you should find a file named languages. The entry for British is british british British false iso8859-15 en_GB At least I assume from the first three fields that it's British. :-) You might try either of the following tweaks: 1. change iso8859-15 to UTF-8; or 2. change en_GB to en_GB.UTF8. Then save, move a safe distance from the computer Just In Case, and restart LyX. Good luck, Paul

Run 'kpsewhich iso-8859-7.def'. On my system, it's sitting in texroot/tex/latex/greek/. If yours is missing, you can find it on CTAN (for instance, at http://www.tug.org/texlive/devsrc/Master/texmf-dist/tex/latex/greek/). I'm not a texlive user, but I assume you can install a package the normal way (plop the file in the right place and run texhash). /Paul
