compose key on mac os

Hi! I am a new LyX user. On Mac OS X (10.3.4, US intl keuboard) I am 
not able to enter accents the way I am used to on any other application 
(i.e. alt-option` a for à, for instance. Can anybody let me know 
how to persuade LyX to accept alt-option as a regular modifier?

I don't have a US intl keyboard (10.3.4); I do have US Extended, but 
that forces Unicode for special characters like à, and LyX can't 
handle that. However, the standard US keyboard will do it just fine -- 
with option`a.
