I've now found a non-template-based doc that crashes lyx 1.6.4.1.
Uninstalling lyx and everything tex; re-installing mactex and lyx
1.6.4.1 didn't help.
Found a solution for that non-template doc by openi

Lyx 1.6.4.1 on OS X 10.5.8 crashes when opening a document (either
new or created with Lyx 1.5.x) using any template.
Preferences:Path:Document Templates points to /Users/name>/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.6/templates.
Advice?
