What I did was copying and pasting a paragraph to a new document, and removing texts until it can be compiled. Then, I remove or change the offending characters in the original document. This took me a long time! I have complaint this in lyx-devel and Greek characters are correctly handled now. I believe that people are work on highlighting offending characters and giving more meaningful error messages. I think that the forthcoming 1.5.3 will have these features. Cheers, Bo

(Incidentally, I've tried > with a new document, and that works fine). If you have a command line version of iconv, run it against the file; it should squawk when it hits an indigestible character. (I think Linux distros come with libiconv, at least if you have the C development stuff installed. I'm not sure if that includes the command line binary.) If you don't have iconv, post the doc or send it to me directly, and I'll run iconv against it. /Paul
