I have additionally a

Strangely, this

is listed in the pdf file also as
bibliography

Paul,

The problem is that standard LaTeX page definitions do not allow the
precise layout design which is one of memoir's purposes, so the package
does things differently. The default values are ones which are used
very frequently, so new users of memoir often don't notice the
difference. But when you want to move away from the default you have
problems. That's how I found out that memoir does things differently.

Les

I was struck by your observation that the memoir class ignores the LyX page
sizes. I have been using memoir as my base for most LyX drafting and have
happily used either the LyX defaults or minor variations specified in the LyX
settings eg on margins without any apparent need to put anything in the
preamble. Is this just because I have simple needs (a4, standard margins)? If I
needed a greater range of sizes would I then find that the LyX settings were
ignored?

I have been using versions of LyX up to the most recent on Mac OSX, currently
Catalina.

Agree with you about the manual!

Rich,

Thanks for the information. I might have a use for pdfjam sometimes.

The document I gave the example for is a memoir currently in the
process of publication. When the "Books Manager" with the publisher
talked about scraping my text from my 340 page PDF file, in order to
reformat to follow their style, it set off all kinds of alarm bells
when I thought of what they would do with over a hundred figures, a six
page glossary, an 18 page index, and hundreds of cross-references. So I
offered to prepare a final PDF to their detailed specifications. The
trickiest part was getting the page headings exactly as they wanted
them. This would not be possible with KOMA-script (which I have used
extensively, and still do use a lot).

I hope by doing it this way, the publisher will not only get it
"right", but will get it on sale faster, and at lower cost. If
the publisher's costs are lower, they can sell at a lower price, which
will increase the number of sales and (hopefully) increase my royalties.

Les,

I use the KOMA-Script classes, not memoir, but I offer information related
to PDF page size that applies to existing PDF files, not generated ones in
LyX.

There's a tool called pdfjam that allows a pdf document to be resized to
different paper sizes (among other tweaks.) I learned of it when printed web
pages were legal rather than letter size. Using pdfjam I reformatted the
documents to fit letter paper.

Off topic but perhaps useful.

Yes. The commands I listed set up the whole of the page layout.

I really like memoir, but learning it has taken me years, and I still
have to look things up in the manual (over 500 pages with a Fog Index

The memoir class ignores LyX page sizes. You have to define them in
the preamble.

Here is what I have put in the preamble to solve a similar problem:

\setstocksize{9in}{6in}

Re: PDF output wrong size

2020-03-03 Thread Richard Opheim
Sorry about that. It's been a while since I posted.
I'm running LyX 2.3.4.3 on WIN10. The class is memoir. I specify that the
paper format should be 8 x 5, but the program doggedly outputs to 8.5 x 11.
Other paper format specifications result in the same problem. The problem is
not caused by tables or figure floats; only by graphics, whether in a
figure float or not. Deleting the graphic allows the program to output to
the size specified in paper format. Downsizing the graphics doesn't help.
This behavior was not noticed until recently because I had been working for
a couple of years on a book in the 8.5 x 11 (letter) format which outputs
normally with graphics inserted.
Please find attached a new file with minimal text, graphic without float,
and nothing in the preamble, which results in the same undesirable output.

This is not a MWE.

Remove EVERYTHING (packages, layouts) from the file (and preamble) which
does not cause the error. Or construct a virgin file, without anything
other than a line or two of text, add the paper format and the image.
If that works out add one modification, package at the time and

Rasterized PDF output with default font

2018-09-21 Thread Daniel

Hi,

When I typeset a PDF with the default font settings (under Windows 10),
the output text is rasterized (source and output files attached).

I haven't used the default font settings for a while, so maybe this is
normal? But it seems strange to me.

This is not a bug (you can call it a missing feature). LyX is not supposed
to print a change bar in the output.

You can find a module that implements the feature here:
http://wiki.lyx.org/Layouts/Modules

This module will be part of LyX 2.2.

Change tracking: no change bar in PDF output

2015-12-31 Thread Rudi Gaelzer
There is a possible bug here:
Using change tracking with PDF output (pdflatex), the \lyxdeleted and \lyxadded
commands work as supposed (respectively: read, strike out and blue). However,
the change bar is not printed at the margin.

Looking at the source, I noticed that LyX uses the xcolor, pdfcolmk and ulem
pacs to show the changes, when the output is directly piped to a PDF.

OTOH, if I export the doc to (plain) latex, LyX will use the dvipost package.
Then, with "pplatex " and "dvipdf ", the resulting PDF contains the
change bar.

Here is the source text, which won't printout the change bar.

PDF output on mac suddenly became very slow

2014-08-14 Thread Michael Bay
Hello dear LyX community,

I'm quite new with LyX and probably just have been looking at the
wrong places for answers to my following question, so please,
if that should be the case, be so kind to tell me a link to the answer ;-)

If not, I'll be happy to learn about what I've been doing wrong.

I've been writing on LyX for one week now, after having been fed up
with the programming of LaTeX as a novice with a few weeks
experience in TeX and some knowledge in programming.

The system:
Mac (10.9.4, Mavericks)
LyX version 2.1.1
BibDesk version 1.6.3 (3296)

The problem:
Everything was fine till two days ago, when LyX suddenly decided
to take two minutes for each output to pdf-preview.
I'm working on my bachelor's thesis, so the document is
about 40 pages of text with about 20 graphics,
probably nothing out of the ordinary.

If my memory is correct, the problem occured after inserting and
removing some bigger JPG PNG graphics, in the process of
finding the best graphics-format. Now none of these graphics are
still inserted, the floating objects are removed as well.

What I also did was changing some directories where I stored
these files in my project-folder, but LyX should warn me,
if it doesn't find any external files anymore, shouldn't it?

Well, it doesn't. What it does is stated in the
(very basic and to some extend german)
log at the end of this message.

The first thing to catch my eye is the unnamed process
from (16:31:02.323) to (16:31:29.225), which occurs three times
and obviously causes the problem with almost 30s of duration.

Any suggestions?

What I've also been trying is enabling the glossary with no
success to this point. But I've removed all my attempts,
including the glossary macro at the end of LyX.
So that - theoretically - should have no influence and is not
part of my question.

I hope you have some ideas for the further process of problem solving...

With best regards,
Michael

If my memory is correct, the problem occured after inserting and
removing some bigger JPG & PNG graphics, in the process of
finding the best graphics-format.

With best regards,
Michael

temporary ruler in pdf output while editing document

2013-11-14 Thread Csikos Bela
Hello:

When editing documents, occasionally it would be very useful to have

vertical and horizontal rulers at the edges of the document.

The best would be if the pdf viewer had rulers; I don't know any

pdf viewer with such feature.

A workaround could be to insert rulers using latex code. These rulers should

not modify the positions or placement of other elements in the pdf output.

In the final document the code specifying the rulers could be removed,

and the document would look the same as during editing but without the rulers.

Is this possible? How?

Thanks in advance,

bcsikos

I use PDF XChange Viewer

It works fine in Linux under Wine. You'll need one of
the other solutions if you're on a Mac, I guess.

I'm seeing a strange glitch in the PDF output where headings and paragraph
texts overlap, or sometimes paragraphs overlap each other. (see links)

As I edit the text, the problem shifts from one section to another. That is, if
I add some sentences to Section II, the heading overlap problem might stop
effecting Section III, but starts effecting Section VII.

I haven't found any pattern to it, so far.

Ideas?

Hi Francesco,

Did you figure out your issue? If you can't figure it out, please send a
small example file that contains the minimum stuff possible to reproduce
your problem. It guess it has likely something to do with required LaTeX
packages that are not installed on your system, thus LaTeX export is
blocked but LyXHTML does not rely on LaTeX and thus it is always
available as an export option.

The document uses IEEEtran which has been recently updated,
but I don't think that's the problem since I've got other
(smaller) documents that compile just fine
as PDFs with IEEEtran.

Thanks!

pdf output disabled for some documents

2013-02-01 Thread Francesco Montorsi
Hi all,
I'm having a strange problem with LyX 2.0.5.1,
with latest MikTeX 2.9 packages updated.

Most of the LyX documents I open can be compiled as PDF without troubles.
A LyX file I've got instead may be apparently rendered only as HTML:
when I click on the toolbar button "Show other formats" all items
"Show PDF (...)" are disabled; only "Show LyXHTML" and "Show HTML" are enabled.
Does anybody has a clue about why this happens?
How can I debug it?

The document uses IEEEtran which has been recently updated,
but I don't think that's the problem since I've got other

I would use the latest stable version (right now, 2.0.5) How to install it
would depend on which Linux distribution you are using. I am on Arch,
and installing (stable) Lyx from the official package works fine. I do
keep a more or less updated version of (unstable) trunk for testing

(nor is it supposed to be) stable, for instance, and that may create
problems.
For Ubuntu, using the PPA seem to be working fine as well for many users,
but I am not a regular Ubuntu user.

 Hi, Stefano,
 and thanks.

Could you or somebody else kindly check the included short file (bib
 file also added).
If I run it under lyx, it does not show with my setup the citation and
the references. If I export the tex file and run latex and bibtex (3
times) and do dvips it shows the reference, but not the citation (a ?).

The latex logfile tells me the following
Package natbib Warning: Citation `Silver2011' on page 1 undefined on
 input line
  72.
 No file aTest.bbl.
Package natbib Warning: There were undefined citations.

I had tried it with my former texlive2011 also, same problem. Note, that
I do not use biber, since there is no Vancouver layout available. I
might have forgotten to set something back from the biber setup, but an
old file does not work either.

 I am baffled.

 Wolfgang

the lyx file. The log file tells me

Package natbib Warning: Citation `Hennessey1991' on page 1 undefined on

[1

{/mnt/sda/home/wolfgang/texlive/2012/texmf-

LaTeX Font Info:Font shape `T1/phv/bx/n' in size 12 not available

Package natbib Warning: Citation `Panda2004' on page 2 undefined on input

Is the missing font the cause and where do I get it resp. which other font
can I use? I am under debian-linux

It is often desirable to leave comments in the margins of a document.
The various TODOnotes facilities work fine, but I have now found that
they do NOT work in the abstract environment. Is this a feature or a bug?

quoted error message? That being the case, if you look at Tools
 Preferences
File Handling File Formats and select the appropriate (say, PDF (pdflatex)),
is the Viewer field set correctly?

Yes to everything above the last question. That was the problem. The
Viewer field was set to xdg-open. I changed it to acroread and it works!

Many thanks.

The location is not a folder.

The pdf file exists and is viewable, just not using the view button in lyx.

Just to be clear, you're saying that if you do View PDF or View PDF
(pdflatex) in LyX, you find the aforenamed PDF file in the LyX buffer
 directory,
and you can open it manually in your preferred viewer, but LyX reports the
quoted error message? That being the case, if you look at Tools

Difficulty viewing pdf output

2012-03-25 Thread Art Edwards
I receive the following error message:

Could not display /tmp/lyx_tmpdir.T25823/lyx_tmpbuf2/MRS_2012.pdf

The location is not a folder.

The pdf file exists and is viewable, just not using the view button in lyx.

I tried using the -dgb debug switch from the command line, but this
introduced what appeared to be spurious errors.. no generation of pdf.

Any help would be appreciated.
