You don't need to reinstall: dvips offers an option to do this on line
dvips -mode xxx
as fas as I remember.
Check the doc to find out how to get the available xxx modes.

will not have access to my departmante's machines, and I wanted to have an
option of producing ps files of quality with the default font in my own box.

It looks reasonable.

Ramon An old Canon BJ-200. (But is not the printing where things get
Ramon messed up; it is in the dvips step; I can print documents in
Ramon this printer just fine, if I run dvips in another machine and
Ramon then get the document home and print here).
