Hi Folks,
I'm writing a thesis using book class. How can I eliminate the running

Thank you very much.

Just select plain page style in the document dialog.

Howdy!
I'm writing a book-style document and have the problem that if I make
a chapter headline long and descriptive it doesn't fit on one line
for the running headers on each page. Is there a way to have a sort
of abbreviated or self defined running headers or are they always
exactly

I guess you will have to use some ERT:
instead of using Chapter environment write (in Standard environment)

Is there a way in lyx to have a shorter version of a chapter header
apart from \chapter[short]{long header} in tex mode?
Which documentclass do you use?
In article there is no chapter. But you could use report (?) or book. In
these documentclasses there exists the chapter header.
