LyX v2.4 RC4 - keyboard shortcut

2024-04-17 Thread Bernt Lie via lyx-users
I just discovered the “character” shortcuts Alt + C…, e.g., Alt + C R for
mathroman in math.

  * I’m a touch typist, so I prefer to use keyboard shortcuts over menus
  * I’m not a pianist, so I don’t have extremely independent movement of
fingers
  * Because the “Alt” key is on the lefthand side of the keyboard and the “C”
key also is on the lefthand side, this makes it very awkward to hold down the
Alt key and at the same time hold down the C key.
  * This difficulty is increased by that the Alt key should be hit with the
*middle finger* (which must be bent in an awkward way to hit the Alt key). The
problem is much less pronounced with the Ctrl key, which is hit with the pinkie.

Probably not a popular suggestion, but it would be much simpler to use Alt with
a key on the righthand side of the keyboard, e.g., replacing Alt+C with Alt+K.

Folsk,

To find the command needed, use View -> Messages Pane, and then insert the
cross-reference label manually. You should see `dialog-show-new-inset ref`
appear in the Messages pane. This is the command that you need to add to
the shortcut's Function specification when you go to Preferences -> Editing
-> Shortcuts -> New.

Hope this helps,
Joel

Insert cross-reference shortcut

2024-04-10 Thread Folsk Pratima
You can make a shortcut for inserting a label, but I did not find a way
to do it for inserting a cross-reference, so every time I have to use
mouse to click on the toolbar.

Any suggestions?

Looks like no one came up with a similarly good shortcut as the
old one. That might not be too surprising. Unfortunately, it will
leave macOS users in the dust with the next major version.

I myself tend to set Ctrl-I for emphasis, which is what most
applications use. Of course, they mean "Italic", not emphasis, but
it's what I'm used to.

Interesting. And I like the idea of having cross-application
shortcuts. However, on macOS Cmd-I is "inset-toggle". Is it not used
for that on Linux by default?

Yes, but I changed it locally long ago. I think the current
assignment is mostly historical.

Riki

Thanks. Okay, I see that you just switched inset-toggle and font-emph.

Unfortunately, LyX 2.4 on macOS was changed to have a not well-known
(and documented) macOS specific "copy feature" on Cmd+E, so this would
not work either straight away... (I tried to argue against changing
Cmd+E on macOS but didn't succeed on my own.)

I never use the inset-toggle shortcut and maybe it is less commonly used
than emphasis? So, maybe at least on macOS, inset-toggle could be
changed to Cmd+Shift+E? Not ideal. But maybe better than the other way
around. And on other systems Cmd+E and Cmd+I could be switched in order
for people to be able to easily switch between systems. This is all a
mayor annoyance since people will be used to these shortcuts.

Couldn’t wait! I downloaded the latest MacOS beta and have already bound

to wait a little?
(I felt tempted to add this shortcut to emacs.bind, so now it is there, commit

Shortcut to switch panes?

2023-07-06 Thread Christopher Menzel
Estimable LyX folk,

The answer seems to be “no” but: is it possible to set up a keyboard shortcut
that, when one has split a window into two panes (“views” in LyX-speak), will
make the inactive pane active so that one can easily switch from one pane to
the other? "Ctrl-X O" does this in emacs and it’s a real timesaver, as one
doesn’t have to lift one’s hand off the keyboard, move the mouse cursor to the
inactive pane, click, and move one’s hand back to the keyboard. I am almost
always working with a split window and I jump between panes frequently, so this
would really be a huge convenience.

Thanks!

There is a problem with the path to default.def.

The use of this file does not consider the 'userdir' option.

I know how to create shortcuts, I just don't know the name of the

In the lyx file this red line is called "Separator plain".

If you really think of it, I don't know the function name because I also
don't know how to insert it from the menus, so you are welcome to tell
me how to do that as well.

I think it depends on your LyX version where to find the menu entry.

It used to be possible to insert a separator from the "Edit" menu.

In recent versions it was replaced by menus called "Separated Frame
Above" and "Separated Frame Below" in the "Insert" menu. It is already
bound to the Alt+P Alt+Return and Alt+P Return, respectively.

You can see the function by opening the Messages Pane (View menu) and
executing the function. Spoiler ahead! It is

command-alternatives environment-split ; environment-split previous

The menu entries disappear when the Standard environment is used. I
guess it would be better to show them at all times but gray them out
when not accessible. In that way the user gets accustomed to that there
are such menu entries and where those menu entries are. Also, for some
reason when you are in the "Frame Title" inset, then the command
disappears. I guess it would be better to make it accessible in that
case or at least only gray it out.

(I made the suggestion elsewhere that these separators should be
disbanded and instead frame content should be distinguished from
non-content by indentation. But it is yet to be seen whether this works
and will be taken up by the developers.)

Hello.

There is much quicker way to find names of the commands than to search
the documentation. You can open Messages pane (View – Messages pane) and
do whatever action you want. The name of the command of that action will
be written in the pane and after that you can create shortcut for it. It
is my usual way in creating shortcuts.

Try binding "unicode-insert 0x2116" (without the quotes) to your key of

first non-ERT character to the left or right of the frame.

-David
You can bind keys to the functions "inset-begin" (positions the cursor
before the first character in the inset) and "inset-end" (positions
the cursor after the last character in the inset). In both cases, the
cursor remains within the inset.

To exit the inset, you can use "command-sequence inset-end;
char-forward;".

Paul

But there's a catch with using inset-end or inset-begin like this to
move out of the inset. If the cursor is at the end of the inset already
then "command-sequence inset-end; char-forward;" will take you to the
end of an enclosing inset if there is one, or to the end of your
document if there is not, which can be disconcerting if all you want to
do is position the cursor immediately after the inset.

command-sequence line-begin; inset-end; char-right;

takes care of the case when the cursor is already at the end of the
inset (but still produces the big jump to the end of the document if the
inset is empty).

Huh, weird. I just checked this out on my Linux laptop and selecting the Emacs
keybindings (Tools → Preferences → Shortcuts → Bind file) gives me the
Ctrl-a/Ctrl-e behavior noted inside an ERT frame.

Ah, you know what? Ctrl and Cmd are all turned around for me on the Mac. Try
using Cmd-a and Cmd-e instead! (I had to go into the Shortcuts and explicitly
assign the functions in question to Ctrl- characters instead of Cmd-
to get Emacs bindings to work correctly.) I suspect there was a more global way
to do this in one fell swoop, but I couldn't figure out any other way to do it;
and it works. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But if all you want is some keystroke to get the cursor
movement you want, you can just use the Cmd- bindings noted.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, no luck.

I have been using the mac keybindings, plus some customizations.
Unfortunately, neither with the mac keybindings nor when I change to the emacs
keybindings (I was hoping to get the code that way) do I see these actions.
With the mac keybindings, ctrl-e takes me to the end of the on-screen line, but
not the end of the frame. Ctrl-a alone seems to do nothing except display "^a
options" on the status bar at the bottom. With the emacs keybindings, both
ctrl-a and ctrl-e yield "unknown function".

Ctrl-o closes the frame and places the cursor to its immediate left; that
behavior is definitely due to my choice of Emacs keybindings.

Hi Barış,

I don't know if it's possible to use that particular key sequence for the
shortcut. I tried and it doesn't work for me. In case it's still helpful, I can
tell how to use a different key sequence.

First let's make sure we get the command-sequence that you want. The general
way to do this is written up step-by-step here:

http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/208510/lyx-commands-to-insert-wysiwyg-horizontal-line-for-keyboard-shortcut/208531#208531

I think the command-sequence you want is the following:

  command-sequence font-emph; self-insert i.e.; font-emph

Copy that command-sequence line (starting with "command-sequence" and ending
with the second "font-emph"), then in LyX go to Tools > Preferences > Editing >
Shortcuts. Then click on "New". In the box "Function", paste the
command-sequence. Then click on the blank rectangle and then press the key
sequence you want (unfortunately I think your ideal sequence doesn't work).
Then press "OK".

I'm sorry I couldn't figure out how to do it with "Ctrl+i+e". It did work for
me with "Ctrl + ;".

Best,
Scott

Not intended but I found no way to refocus the widget. But you can
check "Wrap" in the search widget to automatically start from

Can you report whether you can build master sucesfully with Autoconf 2.71?
You can use the attached patch (or change manually those lines in autogen.sh).

We will bump the version once we have some report that it works.

Yes, I just builded master successfully with these changes.

I checked new find – it's much more comfortable than previous! One thing –
after reaching end and continuing search from beginning by Enter active is not
search area but text area, so hitting Enter deletes matched word and creates
new paragraph in that place.

activate another split view window by shortcut

2021-02-19 Thread V K
Hello.

Lyx has quite big good capabilities for working only with keyboard. But using
split windows force user to use mouse to switch windows. That ruins keyboard
navigation. User have to click another window with mouse to switch. It would be
much more comfortable to switch active windows by using a keyboard shortcut.
Maybe there is one, but I didn't find.
It is particularly annoying that cursor moves to place that was clicked in
second window, but often user need position that cursor had before click.

There were such requests before but I didn't find ticket in trac:
https://latex.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22926
https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/358537/is-there-a-shortcut-in-lyx-to-type-in-another-split-view

I created a ticket #12115

Happy sailing to version 2.4

Valdemaras

P. S. I can't compile lyx master in Manjaro (Arch derivative) anymore because
of autoconf versions:

Using autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.71
This autoconf version is not supported by LyX.
LyX only supports autoconf 2.65-2.69.

You don't need the "command-sequence" part. That's only useful when you
want to chain a sequence of commands together.

Creating custom shortcut for cross-referencing

2020-01-02 Thread Hung-Tzu Chang
Hi,

I would like to ask about how to create custom keyboard shortcut for the
"Insert | Cross-Reference" function in LyX. I searched through the list in
Preferences->Editing->Shortcuts and couldn't find the corresponding item
for such function. I also searched through the LyX bind folder for the
program and found the function "reference-insert" in the file "aqua.bind".
However, the function "reference-insert" cannot be found in the preference
menu. Manually adding the "reference-insert" line to the bind file
user.bind in the .config folder doesn't work. The LyX version in question
is 2.3.3 (both Windows and Mac).

Thank you and happy new year!

Best,

Most LFUNs do get reported there (including this one), but not all. For
more info, you can also look at the messages pane, and active "action".

I'll just add that, if you want to do a number of things in a row, then
you will want to use the "command-sequence" LFUN, which lets you string
things together. You could use this e.g. to insert a custom item and
then move the cursor outside it:

    command-sequence argument-insert item:1; char-forward

If you're often going to leave the item blank, then this may make sense.

Oh, and I'll also add, though you may already know this (others may
not): You can test these before assigning them to keystrokes by opening
the Command Buffer (View> Toolbars> Command Buffer, or Meta-x or Alt-x
as a shortcut) and entering the LFUN stuff there.

When you insert something from menu, look at LyX's status bar: there you'll
see a command (argument-insert item:1). With that code you can now create a
custom keyboard shortcut, just write the code on the Function box (without
the brackets).

You have a list of all "LyX Functions" at Help → LyX Functions.

Under Tools > Preferences > File Handling > File formats, click on the
Format select box at the top and scroll to "LaTeX (pdflatex)". I suspect
that under "Short name" you have "pdflatex", as I do. Now switch the
select box to "PDF (pdflatex)", and I suspect the short name is now
"pdf2". At least it is on my systems.

So I gave you the shortcut to export the buffer as a PDF file, compiled
using pdflatex, which might not be what you had in mind. What worked for
you should be producing a LaTeX source file compatible with pdflatex. If
that's what you want, dandy. The expression of confusion by LyX when you
used "pdf2" suggests that maybe it doesn't know how to compile to PDF
using pdflatex (converter not specified, didn't find pdflatex on your
system, finds pdflatex morally objectionable, thinks it's a Russian
plot/Chinese hoax/SNL skit, ...).

Hi Chen,

See the answer here. It is written in a general way so that you can
find out how to make shorcuts for many different LyX actions.

Dear Chen,

See in Preferences Keyboard shortcuts. The action is label-insert and
you can define a shortcut of your choice for it. In your case you will
find label-copy-as-reference useful too, to later paste the reference.

Shortcuts not working, shortcut bar not visible

2014-11-01 Thread Tobias
Hi lyx-users,

When I saw some other people using LyX, they had a bar / line below the
document which showed for every click / action the made the
corresponding shortcut which would have caused the same action.
Unfortunately I don't see such a bar when running LyX. Where can I make
it visible?

Furthermore, I am not able to use shortcuts in general. I followed the
advice here [1]: M-p (alt-p) followed by a space opens the environment
list, but pressing alt-p just prints a p in the document.

OS: Lubuntu 14.04
Lyx: 2.0.6

It would be great if you could help me.

Looking at the shortcut bar I noticed that I have to press ALT + a +

'unicode-input' to ctrl-shift-u in the preferences (results in '\bind

What happens for you when you do ctrl+shift+u? On Ubuntu 13.10 with
LyX2.1beta2 I get a u with an underline, but on the next character
it disappears. I have the feeling this is a Qt-related issue (I was
just wrong on this same feeling in a thread before though so beware).

I have a list of unicode code points taped to my monitor and want to
be able to enter the corresponding characters for them all without
having to set up shortcut keys for each.

Nice idea. I often forget the usefulness of physical cheat sheets.
I've been meaning to print some.

I forgot to mention that Ctrl-Shift-u allows me to subsequently enter
code points to input unicode characters in LyX on another machine
 running Ubuntu 13.10

So you are saying that it works as you expect on this machine? Which
 version of LyX is it?

2.0.6-1 on both machines.

and, more importantly, that pressing Ctrl-Shift-U
on my machine oddly generates a O with a backslash through it, without
me entering any characters afterwards. I've now unset Ctrl-Shift-U in
the key bindings and still see this behaviour.

 This is why I think it's Qt-related. I don't think there's a built-in
 LyX binding for Ctrl+Shift+U.

You're right: it's an OS issue rather than a LyX one. The problem
seems to be that the 'ibus' input method isn't installed and enabled
by default on Linux Mint 16 (which comes with the older xim input
method enabled instead). However, I think that ibus might be
installed and enabled if one installs either the KDE and/or XFCE
desktop environments, both of which are installed on the machine on
which unicode input works as desired.

Now that I've installed and enabled ibus I can enter unicode using
Ctrl-Shift-u code point. I can add notes on this to the LyX wiki

Thanks for investigating this, Will.

Please put your notes. I'll be interested in reading them (I know
nothing about this subject).

Keyboard shortcut for unicode input not working

2014-01-23 Thread William Furnass
I'm running LyX v2.06 on Linux Mint 16. In other applications I can
enter a unicode character using ctrl-shift-u then the code point.
However, I'm unable to do this in LyX, even if I explicitly bind
'unicode-input' to ctrl-shift-u in the preferences (results in '\bind
C-S-u unicode-insert' being added to .lyx/bind/user.bind).

Anyone got any ideas why this isn't working? I know I can enter
unicode using alt-x then typing 'unicode-input codepoint' in the
input box that appears at the bottom of the main window but this is
rather cumbersome.

Regards,

Will
