I have done this successfully with Lyx 1.3.4 on OSX.
I just used Insert Citation. Nothing special that I can remember.
It works for me too but have noticed things can get confused

i have a problem with pdftex (miktex 2.4) and lyx 1.3.3 for win. I work
with a great document with more underdocuments, the heat from the
document is with roman cite numbers and the body with arabic numbers and
i have a bibtex-bibliography insert, when i run pdftex it works fine.

I am completely new to lyx... so sorry if my question is
too newby. I am trying to write a document in Lyx, I
inserted a TOC, and have some paragraphs. The TOC displays
ok, but when I try to create a pdf of the lyx file it
gives me an error msg. It is:

How do I avoid hyphenation of a word which already contains a hyphen?
A word containing a hyphen, like P-Tracker should never be hyphenated.
With Tex it is sufficient to write P"~Tracker - which will result in
P-Tracker on the printed document and it will never be divided at the end of

I wrote an empty document with only the following
ERT:
\setlength\unitlength{1mm}
\begin{overpic}[scale=1.5]{test.eps}
\put(21,40){$\frac{1}{Y^{2}}$}
\end{overpic}
It gives various cryptic errors:
'arithmetic overflow', '.eps is an unknown graphics
extension' and crazy stuff like that
