A fool-proof method for sculpting an elephant: first, get a huge
bibtex-mode are different BibTeX-as-database programs -- tkbibtex, or (what
I've used) pybliographer, or Java jabref. You will be certainly much better
with them, than just with vim (although that's what I use most of the time
-- sometimes I use Kate).

bibliography database (which is the most time consuming part of BibTeXing)
and enjoy much better world than just with plain LaTeX's bibliography
environment (what you call build-in bibliography).

Just for both sides of the story, there is an ongoing effort to create a
really good (MODS-based) Java bibliographic manager for OOo, which (if
actually created) could make me think about switching to OOo after all
these years.
