It's meant as a backup in case the save procedure fails. If LyX crashes
while saving a file, you'll end up with an empty file and your document
is lost. Therefore, we copy the original file on disk to a new file
before overwriting the original file.

Sure one could use it to go back to the state of the LyX file when
opend again for continued editing in one step, i. e. without going

I'm not sure what you mean here. The backup is only meant for retrieving
your work whenever the newly saved file is corrupt in one way or the other.

But nowwhere is described how to accomplish this. The files.lyx~
cannot be opened in the normal way by LyX, only with the trick:
rightclick one in Finder/File manager - open with - all programs -
lyx.app (so on Mac).

The .lyx~ files can either be opened in the 'normal' way if you rename
the extension to .lyx or you can use File-Open and enter *.* in the
file name field, and you can drag the file onto the LyX window etc.

Finally, in the 4th and 5th checkboxes of the Tools Preferences
Look Feel User interface menu is not transparent, that the
checking of box Backup original documents when saving is the
_condition_ for the eventual checked and specified box Backup
documents, every XX minutes.

No, these are two different things. If you choose to backup the document
every XX minutes there will be #newfile1.lyx# files next to you lyx
file. These will be removed automatically when saving your document.

From the logical structure of this options' window I concluded the two
possibilities would be alternative (and/or additional).

These are alternatives/additional to each other.

Still uncertain, wether the .lyx~ backup files have yet another scope
within the LyX.app …

No they have absolutely no other scope than that they enable you to
retrieve your work when a save fails.
