It's meant as a backup in case the save procedure fails. If LyX crashes 
while saving a file, you'll end up with an empty file and your document  
is lost. Therefore, we copy the original file on disk to a new file 
before overwriting the original file.


Sure one could use it to go back to the state of the LyX file when 
opend again for continued editing in one step, i. e. without going 
back step-by-step with edit=backward (germ. rückgängig) = Ctrl + -.


I'm not sure what you mean here. The backup is only meant for retrieving 
your work whenever the newly saved file is corrupt in one way or the other.


But nowwhere is described how to accomplish this. The files.lyx~ 
cannot be opened in the normal way by LyX, only with the trick: 
rightclick one in Finder/File manager - open with - all programs - 
lyx.app (so on Mac).


The .lyx~ files can either be opened in the 'normal' way if you rename 
the extension to .lyx or you can use File-Open and enter *.* in the
