One man's opinion: When I use Beamer, I don't use LyX. From my
perspective, LyX adds more complication than convenience or capability.

I love LyX for long text documents, but for slide presentations,
letters, resumes and flyers, I think there are better ways to do things.

Great! I know it's not ideal, but I'm not sure there's any quick fix.

Re: beamer usability

2023-08-18 Thread Neal Becker
If I change my workflow it does, I need to only copy/paste the frame
contents (not the entire frame). So insert separated frame and then paste
in the contents does seem to work. This is probably much better than what
I was doing. Thanks!

Since insert frame separator is no longer on the menu it seems my procedure
has become more complex.

For your specific question, does this thread help you out?

  https://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg104013.html

Basically, if you figure out a command sequence that does what you want then
you can bind it to a shortcut. I know this isn't out-of-the-box user-friendly,
but perhaps it helps your use case.

More generally, I've also found similar workflows to be unexpectedly
complicated. I think that LyX's beamer workflow needs some improvements.
Thankfully, LyX's beamer support was hugely improved several years ago. Before
then, from what I understand it was a bunch of Beamer-specific hacks cobbled
together; now it is just a well-defined special case of a document class. So I
think the hard work is done, and all the required functionality is there, we
just need to improve the interface/workflow.

I have some ideas, based on sporadic discussions on the list. But I have no
time to work on the code, and I do not want to start long conversations unless
there is a volunteer willing to work on the code. Anyone who would be
interested in working on the code, let me know and I will put the time into
organizing my thoughts.

In the meantime, I think it would be helpful to collect several use cases that
are unexpected complicated, like the one that you bring up.

look the same format (even in the LaTeX code).  For some reason I
can't see, 2 of them did give me a cross reference corresponding to
the slide number, as I want, but the 3rd gave me what seems to be the
page number (which is 4 greater than the slide number) because I have
4 \sections before this.

Beamer article class document?

For a slide show, you can put the cursor in either the title or
body of
the frame to be referenced and use Insert > Label... to insert a
label.
Then, where the page number should appear, use Insert >
Cross-Reference..., pick the label of the target frame, and set the
"Reference Format:" box to one of the three options that contains
"".

It might help if you provided an MWE (just enough to show an incorrect

Hmm, a bit more complicated than I thought. I really want the cross
reference to the slide number, which is indicated in the footer.
When I put \section, I get an un-numbered slide so page numbers and slide

I'm trying to get used to the lyx way to insert beamer frames.
Compared to the inset method I've been using I find it a bit

One thing I'm having trouble with is inserting a beamer frame into a
sequence of existing frames.  I have frame 1, a frame separator, and
then frame 2.  If I try to put the cursor at the end of the separator,
and then switch to "frame" from pulldown, this will not insert a
frame, but seems to modify frame 2 (the cursor is placed in the title
of frame 2).

The only way I could get a frame inserted is to first in "standard"
mode type some random characters, and then I could switch to "frame"
to get a new frame inserted.  What am I missing?

Thanks,
Neal

There are multiple ways to insert a frame. One is to put the cursor at
the end of the contents of frame 1 (/not/ the separator line) and click
Insert > Separated Frame Below. With my setup, the keyboard shortcut is
Alt+P Return, but your mileage may vary. You can also start from frame 2
and use Insert > Separated Frame Above.

A while back, I added a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+Return) mapped to
the command "call newframe". That also works like a charm.

When I use metropolis, I pair it with Calibri, a Windows system font. My
needs are very simple and I don't need a specific math font. I find that
Calibri is pleasant when projected on a screen and it has a nice Italic
for a sans-serif font. Because it is a Windows font, I compile my
presentations with XeLaTeX.

Ideally, by default (pympress), I would I have the current slide on the left

I would like to have the notes go in the annotation pad.
If I set: \setbeameroption{show notes}

Re: beamer dual

2021-03-03 Thread Neal Becker
*I prefer pympress because we are mostly working from home and we want
to present over internet. pympress makes the notes window a separate
window on my display. So I can share the main window while I view the
notes window. Just what I need!

You may be missing one of more of these in the preamble. You don't
need more than the first 3, the others are my customizations. There
is a manual for pympress.

\usepackage{pgfpages}
\setbeameroption{show notes}
\setbeameroption{show notes on second screen=right}
%\setbeamertemplate{note page}[compress]
\setbeamerfont{note page}{size=\tiny}
\addtobeamertemplate{note page}{\setbeamerfont{itemize/enumerate
subbody}{size=\tiny}}{}
\addtobeamertemplate{note page}{\setbeamerfont{itemize/enumerate

Re: beamer dual

2021-03-03 Thread Patrick Dupre
Yes,
I installed Pympress.
But, I anticipated that the NoteItem or \note[item] (beamer)
would be the visible in "Annotations" (Pympress)
But it is not the case.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

I'm afraid that the problem was with "\spanishdecimal{.}". I have just put the
option "es-nodecimaldot" at document class, removing preamble lines and tags
not appear.

Why do you load babel and Spanish explicitly in the preamble? Just selecting
Spanish as document language in LyX should suffice.
Anyways, this looks like a bug in babel-spanish. As I don't get it here, I
suppose you need to update the babel-spanish package.

RE: Beamer article

2021-02-27 Thread CESAR MENENDEZ FERNANDEZ
Thanks a lot, but I test your sample and get the same problem (as you can see
at top page date).
I use miktex, and I has not found beamer-article package. I have just update
now all packages, and beamer package date is at 12/02/2021.

I'm sorry, but I don't know where log archive is located and the compiled
document has no errors. Elsewhere I have just test to change language from
Spanish to English. Then I have errors in the preamble, so I comment preamble
lines

%\selectspanish

%\spanishdecimal{.}

And now I get no tags!! output pdf document is OK!!

Sincerely

Hi all
I think I have searched the messages and have not found the solution.
For a few months, the change of document type from Beamer to beamer article
generates labels with the order of the animations, how can they be eliminated?
I attach an example with the lyx file and the pdf outputs of the article and
the presentation.

This works without problems for me (attached my output with the missing
graphics removed).

This is with beamerarticle 2021/02/09 v3.61

Why do you load babel and Spanish explicitly in the preamble? Just
selecting Spanish as document language in LyX should suffice.

Anyways, this looks like a bug in babel-spanish. As I don't get it
here, I suppose you need to update the babel-spanish package.

Hi Murat,

Thanks for that example! Are those separate equations (from LyX's
perspective) or is it a multi-line construct? I think they are separate,
which makes sense and gives some flexibility. But it might be difficult
to align things. But perhaps I should not be so picky :)

Attached is an example and with manual \onslide it can be made to work.
I'm not sure if this approach generalizes for other cases, but I think
it will work for me.

Thanks for your help!

Because they correspond to different roles:

Custom inset > Beamer Note => LaTeX: \note{...}

"Note item" layout => LaTeX: \note[item]{...}

That corresponds to two different usages, and after using both I like the

It could be your used bib-file having latin9 chars.

UTF-8. Open on you Mac. Save it. Open it again and check the

If by any chance you kept the original Mac version (did not overwrite it
with the version saved on Windows), you could diff the two LyX files to
find the offending character.

Other than having a different idea about what an end-of-line character
should be, I don't recall Windows mucking up characters on its own. If
you paste in something copied from, say, a PDF (where there are
ligatures) or maybe type something like an accented letter while
editing, maybe that could be the source of the problem?

Re: Beamer presentation PDF resolution [RESOLVED]

2020-06-19 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse
Thank you also very much for this RTFM!!!

After 10 years of being irritated that the Beamer presentations of mine
leave a black frame in full screen, I now finally found that
aspectratio=1610 removes it.

Tested it with Skim, Acrobat and Preview (and on Zoom) and looks great.
Need to look at it with a beamer, but nowadays we do our CPD with Zoom
so I don't have (need) ready access to a beamer anymore.

On my iPad Mini 5 with sidecar the standard (43?) looks best so I will
need to try different ratios on the beamer when we go back to F2F.
Fortunately with Makefile or a for loop it's rather easy to produce a
PDF in each supported aspect ration and then try every one on the
beamer and use the one that looks best.

This is great stuff!

greetings, el

Rich,

glad to know it worked. I've found it a while ago as a stackexchange

I'm moving my business marketing/prospecting to use video tutorials on a

The beamer output is now in 16:9 aspect ratio, and the softwar I use to
display the PDF for the recorded video tutorials ('impressive') is scaled to
open in a 860x540 dpi window, half the final resolution. I use ffmpeg to

Comment:

A just-completed presentation has 6 images in it. The first two share
their
frames with text so I used columns and two individual columns per
frame with

the image on the left and the text on the right. This worked just fine.

But, the next 4 images are large and each occupies an entire frame by
itself. I inserted the first one, tweaked the size and position, and used
alt-p/shift-enter to create a new frame environment. But, nothing
happened;

no new frame. I looked in the beamer manual but the word 'image' appears
only once and in reference to using overlays.

After much futzing I discovered a solution. When I defined a new frame
environment I inserted an itemize environment, then immediately created a
new, following frame. With the latter patiently waiting I inserted the
image

in the first new frame, set its size and position, then moved to the next
frame that was created before inserting the image.

I hesitate to call this a bug because I don't know if there's a way I've
missed to insert only an image in a frame then create a new frame
after that

other than what I did.

No worries. This appears to be a known bug in Beamer. See, for instance,
the accepted answer here
.
You can work around it by setting the overlay specification on the first
item rather than on the frame. See the attached LyX file, which I
modified. (I also had to change the bibliography style, since I do not
have the .bst file you are using, but that should be unrelated to the

Paul, this was very helpful, thanks for it and the attached lyx file.
Works well also with the special bst file.

I tried to compile this and set a new indoor record for "cannot
determine the size of a missing graphic" errors. Can you cut this
down to a minimal example that shows the problem?

Paul

I am awful sorry that I have sent indecently not the almost minimal
file I had prepared, but somehow the original file slipped in.

Wolfgang

No worries. This appears to be a known bug in Beamer. See, for instance,
the accepted answer here
.
You can work around it by setting the overlay specification on the first
item rather than on the frame. See the attached LyX file, which I
modified. (I also had to change the bibliography style, since I do not
have the .bst file you are using, but that should be unrelated to the
itemization fix.)

I must have activated track changes accidentally. Now I know the

No, because I did not know how to do a screen shot with the Fujitsu
lifebook (nothing worked with DRUCK, ALT DRUCK, ALT GR DRUCK and trying
to paste it in Gimp).

I renamed .lyx, started lyx anew and the Document> settings is now

So this is solved, but would like to know why it failed before.

You can't get rid of it. As with any other environment, this tells
you
what is contained ("nested") in the current frame.

You probably talk about something different. Please post a minimal
example.

Jürgen, I am completely stuck. If I change something in my beamer

I just noted, that I can't get the >document>settings anymore (the page
just stays blank), not only for the document in question, but for all
other documents.
