If you are not currently working on a very urgent document, I think
biblatex is worth to learn. I believe biblatex will replace bibtex. The
manual of biblatex is great but some google'ing and stackexchanging
really helps...

Yes, but I am afraid I am too old to learn it as fast as I have to in  
order to finish my book chapter. It's a Springer book and they have a  
special style file.

For this particular case: Add option

giveninits=true

to Document > Setting > Bibliography > Citation Style > Options

Styles can be selected at the same pane of the dialog.

No.

The biblatex manual is comprehensive. For a first start, the LyX user
guide (6.5.2) has some general information.

Biblatex is worth the learning curve.
