you should have the packages installed into MikTex (that is where all my
packages are stored). In Lyx, go to Documents-Settings. In Settings, go to
the bottom of the list on the left side, Latex Preamble. highlight that
and there should be a big blank box to the right instead of other options.
In this box you write,
\usepackage{packagename}
where packagename is the name of the package you downloaded from CTAN.

Hope this works.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but there is not such thing as Lyx
packages. All of them are Latex packages. So unfortunately you need
to, at least, know how to install and use a package in LaTeX, as there
is no easy way to interface a LaTeX package with Lyx. Installation
depends on your OS and LaTeX distribution. Usage is OS independent.

Ηλία,

an ERT means (for some people) Evil Red Text that does the (La)TeX
magic within a LyX document [1].

Basically you press Ctrl+L ( or via the menu you go Insert  TeX Code )
and you enter... well, TeX Code! For example, if you press Ctrl+L and
enter within the (Evil) red box the command \dots (without the double
quotes) you will get three dots.

However, I have no idea what exactly you have to type to get the /
over a(ny) character.

You will need to install the hep package just as you would with any
additional TeX package on your system, i.e. by downloading it from CTAN,
processing it with latex and putting the results in your texmf-folder. See
http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/systems/tex/new-packages.html and also
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/Packages/Installing_Extra_Packages for
instructions. It may look intimidating at first, but it's really not that
hard.

Once installed, you need to reconfigure LyX and restart it -- otherwise LyX
will not know that there's a new package around.

You can then call the package in your document's preamble with
\usepackage{hep} or whatever's its name. Then, and only then, you can make
use of ERT to produce the characters you want.

ERT is explained in the LyX wiki (and many other very useful things are as
well), see http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/ERT. The basic idea is that you can enter
raw LaTeX-code anywhere in your document, an option that does come in handy
from time to time.

For example, your hep package may allow for something like, say, \coolsymbol
as a raw LaTeX-command in order to produce, well -- some cool symbol in the
PDF output. Simply enter \coolsymbol in ERT in your LyX document where you
want it (as explained by Nikos a couple minutes ago) to get the same result.

Let's say a slashed a is entered in LaTeX as: \slasheda. (I have no 
idea what it really is. Presumably the hep manual will tell you.) Then 
in math mode, enter \slasheda and then a space. You'll see exactly 
that, but if you ViewDVI ir ViewPDF or whatever (and have 
\usepackage{hep} in your preamble), then you'll see the slashed 
character in the output. It's just that LyX doesn't know how to display 
it, so it displays the raw LaTeX.


As for ERT, this is also called TeX Mode, and it's activated by 
InsertTeX Mode. It again allows you to insert raw LaTeX into the document.

If it's just a random package that LyX doesn't know about, then you 
don't have to reconfigure LyX. LyX isn't hep aware, so it  What you 
will need to do, as always, is run texhash, or whatever, to update the 
LaTeX databases.

I am a relatively new lyx user and this is my first post so please forgive
my total ignorance..

I ve searched for at least 3 hours to give myself the answer to the
subject's question and there are two possible scenarios : either it is kind
of trivial to install new packages to lyx and therefore i couldn't find any
answer or i did find it but i wasn't able to make it work !!!

The whole story began when i found out an outstanding package on CTAN for my
work, called hep(high energy physics) which promised to let me use Feynman
slashed characters and many more. But then i dealt with that horrible
problem! How to do it work properly and use it through the lyx menus like
all other stuff preinstalled in lyx??? And in general, what do i have to do
in order to install a new package and make it work as if it were
preinstalled in lyx?


   

I'm afraid that this is not in general possible---unless you want to
write the source code yourself and contribute it to LyX, which of course
would be welcome. That is to say: Every package that LyX natively
supports, it supports only because someone wrote the code that makes LyX
support it. To get the various particle names to display properly, for
example, the names have to be added to the unicodesymbols file, together
with code points in various fonts, etc. So it's not a trivial matter at all.

math mode, you just type it; in non-math mode, you can enter the 
characters in ERT. You can do this with any LaTeX stuff that LyX does 
not support.

understand..what is ERT?what exactly do i have to type in math mode in

Ηλία,

an ERT means (for some people) Evil Red Text that does the (La)TeX
magic within a LyX document [1].

Basically you press Ctrl+L ( or via the menu you go Insert  TeX Code )
and you enter... well, TeX Code! For example, if you press Ctrl+L and
enter within the (Evil) red box the command \dots (without the double
quotes) you will get three dots.

However, I have no idea what exactly you have to type to get the /
over a(ny) character.

You will need to install the hep package just as you would with any
additional TeX package on your system, i.e. by downloading it from CTAN,
processing it with latex and putting the results in your texmf-folder. See
http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/systems/tex/new-packages.html and also
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/Packages/Installing_Extra_Packages for
instructions. It may look intimidating at first, but it's really not that
hard.

Once installed, you need to reconfigure LyX and restart it -- otherwise LyX
will not know that there's a new package around.

You can then call the package in your document's preamble with
\usepackage{hep} or whatever's its name. Then, and only then, you can make
use of ERT to produce the characters you want.

ERT is explained in the LyX wiki (and many other very useful things are as
well), see http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/ERT. The basic idea is that you can enter
raw LaTeX-code anywhere in your document, an option that does come in handy
from time to time.

For example, your hep package may allow for something like, say, \coolsymbol
as a raw LaTeX-command in order to produce, well -- some cool symbol in the
PDF output. Simply enter \coolsymbol in ERT in your LyX document where you
want it (as explained by Nikos a couple minutes ago) to get the same result.

Let's say a slashed a is entered in LaTeX as: \slasheda. (I have no 
idea what it really is. Presumably the hep manual will tell you.) Then 
in math mode, enter \slasheda and then a space. You'll see exactly 
that, but if you ViewDVI ir ViewPDF or whatever (and have 
\usepackage{hep} in your preamble), then you'll see the slashed 
character in the output. It's just that LyX doesn't know how to display 
it, so it displays the raw LaTeX.


As for ERT, this is also called TeX Mode, and it's activated by 
InsertTeX Mode. It again allows you to insert raw LaTeX into the document.

If it's just a random package that LyX doesn't know about, then you 
don't have to reconfigure LyX. LyX isn't hep aware, so it  What you 
will need to do, as always, is run texhash, or whatever, to update the 
LaTeX databases.
