Thanks for the info, but when I try to use \mathbb{e} for example, I get
an empty box ... no writing and it doesn't show up on the ps file ...
any packages I should use in my preamble ?

thanks
Matt

I put the link above on this wiki page,

   http://wiki.lyx.org/Tips/Symbols

which I just created for documenting how to enter various symbols into
LyX. People who know how to do that are welcome to add descriptions and
 examples to that page.

As I told you in my previous e-mail, the solution that I suggested
does not work, i.e., \mathbb{e} does not work. Try the packages
indicated as required in the second column of the table in p. 40 of
the pdf document referred.

By the way, LyX fails to display correctly (in the LyX's window)
\mathbb{e}, even when the bbold package is invoked.
no problem here with 1.3.5 and instant preview

True, but, for example, one can get the symbol referred by \mathbb{R}
in text mode, with the appropriate commands; so, I speculated...

In my case, I get red characters in math-mode.

Maybe, the reported problem occurs to me because I am not using the
default LyX fonts.
