I have the same problem and it seems LyX always displays a DIN A4 or
letter page (and in on corner there is the actual image). However,
when typesetting it, everything works fine, so I did not bother any
further (so far).

It is probably because LyX uses imagemagick to generate a preview from PDF.
From my experience the PDF conversion in imagemagick is quite poor and may
cause problems, similar as with SVG graphics.
