 The column headers are in the second row, the first row is the caption.
You don't need to uncheck multicolumn in the headers, just keep the
width field empty, see the attached file I sent in the previous mail.

Udi,

The column headers are in the first row, and centered. Unchecking
multicolumn for the two header cells doesn't allow me to center them above
the left-aligned cells beneath them.

If you will keep the column width field in the settings empty, they will
have the same width as the rest of the column (currently they have widths
of 45% and 55% of \textwidth, thus the table flows out of the screen).
Change the column width only when the cursor is below the headings.

With the cursor in each of the header cells, there's no width, but the
alignment is Left. The top and bottom borders for the first row, and the
bottom border for the last row slightly overlap the text area.

I'll ignore the left-aligned column headers and slight overhang of the
borders because they're not critical.

Since the alignment of the text inside the second

these cells are typeset inside \multicell, and in this

Paul, Udi:

I placed the cursor in a cell below the first row (for each column) and
changed the widths from inches to % text area (43%, 53%). Not using the top
row cell made a difference.

The table heading and the cell underlines overhang the right margin a bit. I
don't know how fix this.

Hello:

Please do not top post.

I looked at your lyx file and found that the pdfsync package causes the
problem. Remove that from the preamble and your table will look as expected. I
would not use the fullpage package either as you can
set the margins in lyx easily. Note that your example texts overhang
the borders because they don't contain any space and can not
be hyphenated either.

we don't recommend to use any of 2.0alpha/beta for serious work, thats why we

Insert some horizontal or vertical space if necessary. The

examples how to do this. (Start with sec. 3.7 "Subfloats" and/or sec.

  I added 3 mm 'bottom of the row', but no difference came out in the

DVI didn't show the space either.

3.7 mentions putting minipages... Tried that too. That made the
register tables go outside the outer table (to the right). Tried to
adjust sizes (as text %, as cm etc, but all tests gave unpredictable
results.

None of the tests allowed to add spacing below the inner table.

I also tested (as I commented in the previous mail), that inserting a
vertical space below the inner table actually works, but doesn't
communicate the new size to the outer table, so the bottom border of
the table row disappears.

It's a small document. If someone would like to have a go, I'll post
the LyX file.

Thanks!
John

If the toolbar is of use to you, I have found that "locking" it in made the
situation better.
to lock it in...
get into some standard text
select View->Toolbars
select "Table (auto)"

If you look back in View->Toolbars it will show a check mark next to "Table
(auto)", and the Table
toolbar will stay stuck on LyX User Interface until you undo the check mark,
thus less random scrolling.

I do this when I have a document in which I am doing a lot of table editing.
Hope this helps some.

Two possible solutions that come to mind:
  1. Set column widths. This will force line-wrapping in a cell.
  2. Rotate the table to landscape.
I would probably favor option 1 for most of your tables.

Good idea. LyX can be changed to insert a \phantom instead

I had this code in the preamble of my thesis.

% Creates extra spacing in the rows of all table cells
\usepackage{dcolumn}
\setlength{\extrarowheight}{2mm}

Although this may not be what you want, you could look at the dcolumn
package documentation and see if there are any other options.

Not sure if this is pertinent, but I'm struggling to adapt an article to
the LaTeX style specified by the INFORMS journal Operations Research.
Their style file adds a couple of macros, \up and \down, to be used in
table rows that follow respectively precede a horizontal rule. The
purpose is to add a bit of vertical space between rules and table
entries. The style files can be downloaded from the INFORMS web site
(www.informs.org, then drill down to the journal submission
information), if you'd care to see how they do it.

I have found a good method that increases the vertical spacing of tables and
arrays. In the preamble ad:

\renewcommand\arraystretch{1.25} % (Value=1.0 is for standard spacing)

This and other Tex table tips can be found at:

However, when I add a space to top of a line in a table by setting additional
space between rows to say, custom = 1mm, the space is introduced but, when
rendered as a pdf, there is a corresponding space in the corresponding
vertical border. The space in the border increases and decreases with the
space size. The border space does not occur when a space is introduced at the
bottom of a line.

Is it possible to add a clearance space at the top of a cell without
introducing a space in the vertical border?

There is the trick of adding something invisible that is a little
taller than your superscript. Either an empty minipage
with a specific small size, or a textual construct that
has white color.

correctly one should not use oldstylenums except in the main text

"math mode" but that would seem to be a lengthy operation, as would
indeed be replacing all numbers in the text with ERT. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, LyX doesn't have options for turning
oldstyle on/off for pieces of text - only for the whole document.
At least if you use version 1.5.
Various solutions:

1. Use ERT everywhere - but too much work.

2. Redefine the latex tabular environment so that it issues the
   "no oldstyle" command in addition to everything else it does.
   Then all tables comes out without oldstyle numbers.
   I don't know if this is feasible though.

Version 1.5 may offer a solution if you're willing to
create a custom layout file. Understanding layout files is
some work, but gives these options:

3. Make a charstyle for "not oldstyle numbers". You can then mark
   anything and apply this style - the numbers marked will no
   longer be old-style. Easier than converting to math, because
   you can (probably) mark whole tables instead of hunting for
   each little number. You can also use this charstyle for numbers
   in uppercase headings. (Oldstyle numbers are lowercase,
   non-oldstyle numbers are uppercase numbers.
   So a number in uppercase text should not be oldstyle.)

4. For older versions of LyX, make a paragraph style (instead of a
   charstyle) for "standard, but not oldstyle numbers".
   Very much like alternative 3, except that it always works on
   whole paragraphs. But a table is usually in a paragraph
   of its own anyway, so not much of a problem here.
   You can then change the paragraph type for each table.

Well, I asked myself the same question when looking at older books which
appear to use "oldstylenums" (called "gemena siffror" in swedish) in
tables also (and I think they look beautiful). But googling I found some

So long as things line up decently (I forget if the oldstyle figures in

If you just want to put horizontal lines in a table and have a line not
extend all the way across the table, the trick is to insert the line,
then go to the table pop-up dialog, change the cells where you do not
want the line to "multicolumn" (but leave them one column each) and
toggle off the part of the border you do not want.

If, however, you want to merge a vertical stack of cells and have the
text centered vertically in the merged cells (or wrapping vertically),
you need to use the LaTeX multirow package. Assuming you've installed
it, put \usepackage{multirow} in the document preamble, fiddle the
horizontal lines (if any) as above, and in the first cell of the merged
stack insert \multirow... in ERT (where the ellipsis signifies assorted
options too numerous to discuss here -- see the README file that comes
with multirow for details).

A small example is attached.

Re: Tables inside an enumerate environment

Thanks Uwe

I did try to play with the "content alignment" setting, but it didn't solve
all my problems. The remaining problem is that even when the "content
alignment" is set to middle, the top of the box is aligned with the *bottom*
of the text line. What I need is to get the top of the box aligned with the
*top* of the text line.

Is there a way I can get that effect?

I tried your suggestion and read the docs, but for some reason I can't get
it right.

I created a simple lyx file, with a few words of text followed by a box that
holds a table with multiple rows. When I set the box vertical alignment to
"bottom", the box is correctly aligned. However, when I set the box vertical
alignment to "middle" or "top" there is no difference in the output. In both
cases the preceding line of text if aligned to the middle of the table.
Another interesting thing is that when in addition to "Box Vertical - Top",
I also set "Content Vertical - middle" (instead of the default "Content
Vertical - Top"), The box top suddenly does align with the text line,
although its still bad since its the box top is aligned with the text line
*bottom* part.

My goal is to get the top of the text line aligned to the top of the box. Is
this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

I would try it with pstricks (\usepackage{pstricks}), a tool which can does
everything !
You will have to create the contnet of the cell "by hand"
Zum Beispiel :
 \pspicture(0,0)(2,2)
\psline(0,2)(2,0)
\rput(1.,1.5){$Y$}
\rput(0.5,0.5){$X$}
\endpspicture
Of course, this is not "as simple as ExcelTM" but the real power of TeX is here

Ok, I see this too. I guess that the probalem is here, in
setVSpaceFromWidgets in QParagraph.C:

case 6:
string s;
string const length = trim(value);
if (isValidGlueLength(length)) {
s = length;
} else if (!length.empty()){
string u = trim(unit);
u = subst(u, "%%", "%");
s = length + u;
}
space = VSpace(LyXGlueLength(s));
break;
}

Apparently isValidGlueLength isn't clever enough to understand your length.
Thereafter, the fall back creates an unholy combination of
"\normalbaselineskip" + "sp"
so that the VSpace constructor has no hope in hell of doing anything with
it.

However, I think that the fundamental problem is that the parser that is
used to translate your string into a LyXGlueLength isn't powerful enough
to cope with your LaTeX skills.

Could you file a bug report on bugsilla please?

# Itemize style definition

Onto aesthetics now!

In the example, row 1 height is determined by the contents of R1 C2.

In the viewers/printed page R1C1 "looks" far nicer, better use of cell
padding.
I can get the same using effect using [\vspace{0.3cm}] in R1C2 as per

but you can always open up the paragraph dialog from inside this cell and
insert a vertical spacer after the paragraph of -2ex...

Just tested and it works perfectly.

When you fix the column width, each cell is set as a \parbox, so there is no
need to use minipage. (see attachment) However, the resulting .ps is slightly
different (extra vspace at the end of the second cell)...

It works, see attached example.
You need to set the column width if you want the minipage width be
a % of the column, and to get a proper LyX layout: compare col 1 and 2.

Ok, I'll have a look at that option - setting columns as percentage of
page width may be what we are looking for.

This is the standard TeX way, adapt the column width to the content.
Using the right-click table context menu, you can give the columns a
fixed width (Where fixed can also mean a certain procentage of text or
page width). This also allows line-breaking within a table cell.

Once a satisfying table is set up, it can be saved as a template (in a
simple LyX file to be used via Insert>File>LyX).

I do not know. Possibly you can use a minipage for that.

give the columns a fixed width then you can have

I typed in M-m d for each equation in the table, but it's not enough.
Inserting in a parbox semms to work.

Re: Tables with columns with the same width

2003-11-26 Thread Paul Smith
I would like to know how to set the columns having the same width.
Could somebody here please help me?

You can do this by setting the width of each column to be a percentage
of the entire table width. So if you had 4 columns, then you can set
each column's width to 25%.. To do this - with the cursor somewhere in
a column, right click on the the column and in the box that pops up, put
in 25 in the width box and select "col%" from the drop down menu to the
right (I think it's col% that you want but you can play around with the
other % options too to see what works best).. repeat for each column...
not sure if there's a way to do this for all columns at one go -
selecting all columns and doing the above doesn't seem to work...
Thanks a lot for the helpful replies of Nirmal and of Kenward!

Column widths are set by using the right mouse button over any one you
wish to fix. A dialog will appear, with the width option near the
bottom. Be sure you hit the enter key after entering the number, so the
change takes place...

I don't know how to do it to all columns at once. Sorry. :(

When cutting and pasting from gnumeric, I would create a table in LyX
that was the exact dimensions (i.e. same number of rows and columns) of
what I was trying to paste and didn't seem to have any troubles. I do
remember that it took some patience to get a feel for how to do this,
but I think it only took a couple of iterations.

Do people have other suggestions? ATM Im seriously

Lyx 1.3 activates latex2html bug re tables

2003-06-02 Thread David Green
Hi,

LyX seems to (now?) use /tabularnewline in tables and uses a

\providecommand{\tabularnewline}{\\}

to provide a way to map out \tabularnewline for HTML processors.

It appears that latex2html has a bug that if you have the form:

\section*{Text1}
...
\section*{Text2}
...
# table with embedded \tabularnewline

things don't work. (It works after one \section* but two or more). It
appears that it is a bug in latex2html but it is one that did not
exist at 1.2.* (I was trying to make small mods to a file I had last
used with 1.2.* -- I don't have a "convenient" way to retreat to 1.2.*
to verify this statement.)

I have verified this "bug" against both a Mandrake 8.2 latex2html and
one found on the web labeled "2002-2-1 (1.70)" at CTAN. The link to
latex2html on the lyx.org site does not come up for me.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

There are several ways, and the one you should use depends on what you need
to do exactly.

1) Select a width to the column, and then you can use ctrl+enter (line
break) in that column.

2) Like (1), but select a width only to a single cell in the column, by
clicking the "multi column" button for that cell and then setting the width.

3) Write the text in two more more consecutive vertical cells.
You can disable the lines between the cells by making the cells multi-column,
and then disable the lines you don't need.
