Offtopic, but I'd like to comment a bit this. Windows default postscript
driver seems not to be too good. It might be better to download
another postscript driver from Adobe. Also, windows drivers produce some
rubbish in top of (and possibly bottom) of the postscript file that should
be deleted manually.

xfig works fine for me, also there is "dia" which is great.

Have a go with figurine.

(search on http://sourceforge.net/ for "figurine")

I tried this link yesterday but there is no longer a linux port to be seen.
Trying "linux" in the provided search facility failed and even the
ftp-server did not have a canvas for linux. I suppose they withdraw it when
going from 7 beta to 7. (Correct me if I am wrong)

Hmm.  You might have a system problem.  I have been reliably
using
eps files from dia in my LyX manuscripts for, umm, quite a long time.
Before V1.1.4...

Thanks for your trouble.  Possibly the libraries which come
with Mandrake
Linux ver 7.2 are shaky.  I didn't have a great deal of luck,
before that,
either with RedHat ver 6.2. At some piiny in the near future,
I will try to
see if there is anything to be gained by using another Linux distribution:

    Debian, SUSE, Slackware ?

I am still not using the V1.1.6pre? series, though.

I am using ver 1.1.5pre1, but my current problem does not lie there.
Thanks again.

It' right, but this way will James probably get a bitmapped image, and,
even converted to eps-format, it will remains a bitmapped image (in
fact, "wrapped" in PostScript language) , whereas he surely wants a
vectorized image, which is scalable, not "crude", and more compact.

Every programs which is able to print on a linux system can virtually
produce postscript - in most of cases, there is an option "Print to
file", in the worst of case, you can disconnect your printer and print,
the resulting postscript file will be in the spooler !

So a ps file can be converted with ps2epsi (coming with ghostscript
package) which will evaluate a correct bounding box on basis of the
greatest dimensions of the objects in the ps file, and crop the
superfluous white surrounding spaces.

Some drawing programs give the option to print "only the selected
objects" ; in this case, there is a chance that you will receive
directly a correct bounding box.

It's interessant to know that, even in windows, if you choose a
PostScript printer (you don't need to have a real one, only the driver
for it !) and print to a file, you can take advantage of the resulting
file. It's a way that I use with "autocratic closed programs" which
don't permit to export data's ...

According with others responses, I find tgif very handy.

I use sketch. It rocks. I normally use the postscript printer driver to
export a ps snapshot, then include that in the LyX doc as a figure ps.
This works fine.

If you really need eps, you can convert from ps using ps2epsi, convert or
somesuch.

You might try the Canvas 7 beta at www.deneba.com
It's a WINE-based port of their Mac/Win program & it works
remarkably well under Linux. Quite usable on a
400 MHz P II laptop. Canvas is a full featured combination of
Photoshop/Illustrator capabilities, smoothly integrating vector &
bitmapped graphics in one inexpensive package (the Linux beta is free)
Unfortunately, it suffers from the lack of 3rd party books to
illustrate its power.

I have no problems exporting PostScript (.ps) with Sketch 0.6.8. The

standard Debian Woody installation, FYI.

Sketch is evolving towards being a very good program, :).

Re: Suitable vector graphics program?

2001-01-04 Thread Andre Juffer

Hi James,

you could use ImageMagick to convert your image file in any format to
any other format including eps. That means that you can run your
favourite package for generating your image files, save it a format for
which the package doesn't crash and convert it to eps with ImageMagick.
If you are running Linux, ImageMagick is probably already installed on
your machine (at least Slackware and Redhat come with it). Type
`display' from the command line. Alternatively, you could use `convert'
also from ImageMagick. Try 'man convert' and 'man display' to see how
these programs work.

Cheers,
Andre.

Suitable vector graphics program?

2001-01-04 Thread James Sinnamon

Dear LyX users,
I feel as if I am at my wit's end trying to find a vector drwaing program
which allow me to create drawings which I can export as eps files for
inclusion in a LyX document.  I may have no alternative, but to
use xfig, but it seems
very unwieldy and it seems to take me forever to draw anything.

These are the other packages I have tried:
Package
Problem
Killustrator    Crashes when
I try to export as eps
Dia
Crashes and unable to reload *.dia file (still at ver 0.86)
Sketch
Can't export eps
Regarding sketch, I am told that it will work if the eps, however eps
is not directly supported by the PIL (Python Image Library) upon
which sketch is built.
Killustrator seems like the most straightforward and simple to use,
but
it has a number of acknowledged bugs, and little further work seems
to have been done with Killustrator since March 2000.
How are eps files created? Filters to create eps files.
=
I will probably perservere with Sketch or, maybe,  even xfig.
Nevertheless, I would be interested to know how other LyX users
create Encapsualted Postscript Vector graphic images, to include in
LyX documents.
Are there filter programs out there anywhere which can create eps
files?
Why only eps?

Also, sorry to ask what is likely to be a FAQ, but why are Postscript
and Encapsulated Postscript the only graphics formats which can be imported
into a LyX document?
Thanks for your attention.
regards,
James
