LyX 2.4.4: serious bug wrt. modern tables??
In some lecture notes, I used to have the nomenclature in 2 separate "old-fashioned" tables. I have created a KOMA book file and inserted these 2 tables in File_nomenclature_2024.lyx (this version of the tables works fine). When LyX 2.4 came out, I tried to merge these tables in a single, multi page table. I have attached a file containing the new table in File_nomenclature_2025.lyx. I did not have problems with previewing (pdf) or spell checking the document containing the multi page table prior to LyX 2.4.4, as far as I remember (or perhaps I didn't try it). -- Now, with LyX 2.4.4, when I copy the table from the lecture notes and paste it into a new, minimal KOMA Book template, I get the following behavior (with file File_nomenclature_2025.lyx): 1. I can preview the file (as pdf) once I have just pasted the multi-page table into it. 2. If I try to spell-check the document, LyX crashes big time. 3. If I re-start LyX and try to open the file, LyX never even opens on my Windows 11 PC. 4. If I paste the multi-page table into the KOMA Book template, preview it, and exit the file without trying to spell-check, and then try to open it again, LyX crashes big time. [In other words: you may not even be able to open File_nomenclature_2025.lyx] *Preliminary analysis*: a. The behavior indicates that there is something wrong with the table. -- Has there been a change from earlier versions of LyX 2.4 than LyX 2.4.4? Or can my file have been corrupted? -- The problem with the table blocks the file from being opened (LyX crashes) -- The problem with the table blocks the table from being spell checked (LyX crashes) -- However, if I am able to open the file with the table (only works when I paste it from another file), I can generate a pdf file -- The peculiar thing is that I can open the original file containing the table (huge file). OK -- sometimes, opening that, too, crashes LyX. But it seems like sometimes (but not always) if I rename the file, I can open it. Very weird. b. Alternatively, somehow my LyX installation has become corrupted?? -- If anyone figures out what is wrong, kindly let me know. I spent some time creating the "2025" version of the table, and would like to avoid creating it anew. Tables
Hello, I am using Lyx 2.3.7 and having issues with the table configurations. I have been through many postings on the Web and not resolved the two following issues. The table is broader than the A4 page so I have used the rotate function in the Lyx table config. I am cutting and pasting data from an Excel spread sheet to the Lyx table, and have not used the Lyx file CSV input function because I have a version miss match in my system and I don’t really want to start changing things at this late stage when I am incorporating examiners comments. The two issues I have are. I need to insert a line between the table title and the table itself at the top of the page - I have tried various combinations of line insert using Lyx and ERT functions. - how is this done plse? I am getting the text in a cell by constraining its width via table configs however one column contains hyperlinks and here the wrapping does not work, probably due to their format? Is there a way of warping a continuous character stream into a lyx table cell of defined column width? Thank you Brian Kneller. -- lyx-users mailing list [email protected] https://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users

the "m" specifier does not work within tabularx, these columns are
hardcoded to p (top alignment). This is documented in the tabularx
manual.
You can change that for a table by adding in front of the table:
\renewcommand{\tabularxcolumn}[1]{m{#1}}
If you do it in beamer, this needs to be within a fragile frame,
though.

Vertical alignment in tables
Hi, Thank you for table improvements in 2.4.0. Unfortunately I still have problems to vertically align text. In the MWE, row 3 is shown to be vertically centered but this does not seem to work. From column 3 to the right, all cells in this row are correctly shown as vertically top-aligned but I'm not allowed to change this. I have 2.4.1, openSUSE Leap 15.5. It seems that the problem is due to the table width established in the settings. I did various tests. As a first test, I set the width of each cell and then that of the table, equal to the sum of the widths of the cells in a row. In these conditions the problem occurs: the terminal part of the table (on the right) has no horizontal rows, which stop earlier. If you will keep the column width field in the settings empty, they will have the same width as the rest of the column (currently they have widths of 45% and 55% of \textwidth, thus the table flows out of the screen). Change the column width only when the cursor is below the headings. With the cursor in each of the header cells, there's no width, but the alignment is Left. The top and bottom borders for the first row, and the bottom border for the last row slightly overlap the text area. I'll ignore the left-aligned column headers and slight overhang of the borders because they're not critical. Tables: Setting width for entire column
I've looked at the table settings, the User Guide, and the Wiki without learning how to set the width of an entire column. One table has many rows (it's a multipage table), and I'm able to change the width of only the cell in which the cursor is located. What am I missing? Multipage-tables
Hello, I use LyX 2.3.6.2 on MacOS 10.14.6 and Komscript report. Could someone please tell me to achieve that a table that is in a sliding object and rotated 90° can be displayed multi-page? I have checked this option in the table's settings dialogue, but it has no effect - I only ever get the middle part of the long table displayed, which protrudes from both the top and bottom of the sheet. These parts are then completely missing. I hope this is understandable - thank you very much! Best Jess -- lyx-users mailing list [email protected] http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users
Re: Wrong order of footnote numbers in tables with afterpage
Hello,
I have several multi-page tables in my document. With the package
afterpage it is convenient to force them to always begin on a new page
which works well. I also want to use footnotes in those tables - I am
aware that this is fragile - but this also works as expected. There is
one little flaw, however, the footnote numbering does not correspond
anymore to their actual order.
In LyX I have:
Footnote 1
(afterpage:) Table with Footnote 2
Footnote 3
In the output I have:
Footnote 1
Table with Footnote 3
Footnote 2
That is probably because Footnote 3 is in a paragraph that begins before
the table. Is there any way to correct this numbering, even if manually
for each case?
You'd have to manually reset the footnote numbers. You can do this with:
\setcounter{footnote}{3}
or whatever. You'll need to restore it to whatever's right also after
the last one.
Riki
Thanks, this works like a charm! I have to use this command three times.

Pavel Pavel, Yes, in math mode hitting the ESC key while a completion suggestion is visible removes the suggestion (and the characters that triggered it) but leaves the cursor in the correct position. For instance, if (in a math inset) I type "xyz\ta" I get a suggested completion "xyz\tan". If I hit ESC, the inset contents revert to "xyz" with the cursor after the "z" and inside the inset. Just to be clear, I think you mean *automatic* completion is on for math mode and off for text mode. It took me a while to understand the distinction. In a math inset, if I type something like \right and start playing with the tab key, it does various completion tasks. If I'm not part way into a LaTeX command (but, say, in an align* environment), tabbing moves from cell to cell. In a text table, Tab moves from cell to cell, period. The rest of my LyX is minimally customized, so whatever is on by default is what I usually have. One good way to set this off is to have words in the text around the table that start with the same substring. Try this for a minimal example: "notion, notation, noble, nonsectarian, nondeterministic" then in table: enter "no" in a cell, and hit Tab. (If you hit "yes", it should move you to the next tab, which iis what we want.") After "no", though, I see "nominal" in my minimal example, as well as some of the words from the list I entered above. > > -- > lyx-users mailing list > [email protected] > http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users > -- lyx-users mailing list [email protected] http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users

I don't mind it in math mode, so it's checked, but I pretty much never ever want that behavior in a table. Figures and tables at the end/Page of floats
Hi LyX users, I am preparing a manuscript for a publisher who wants the figures and tables to be placed at the end of the document, with something like "Figure X about here" in the body of the paper itself. I thought that the "Page of Floats" setting would accomplish this, but it seems to group all figures and tables into pages scattered throughout the document. (Except for the last table, which gets placed at the very end of the document, after the bibliography, in the middle of its own page.) I guess the solution that would definitely work would be to put all the float insets at the end manually, select "here definitely" for the positioning option, and then use cross-references to define the positioning of the "Figure X about here" tags. It just seems like there should be a more elegant way to accomplish this. Can the "page of floats" option be controlled somehow? My web search finds many descriptions on how to add LoF and LoT to the ToC, but none on how to keep figures and tables in appendices out of the Toc. A pointer to a solution is needed. This still leaves me curious how to have the tables sequantially number among all chapters, just like figures are. A couple of stackexchange threads mentioned that by default (in reports and books) figures and tables are sequentially numbered. In my document (KOMA-report class) the figures are sequential and now the tables are sequential within each chapter. I'll look at The LaTeX Companion again this weekend. Regards, Rich

Paul,
I, too, don't know why arabic is specified but your modification works and
now the tables are numbered by chapter:
5.1. Statewide benchmarks for General 1200-A permits. . . . . . . . . . . 28
5.2. Summary of monitoring requirements. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 29
7.1. Spill reporting contacts. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 42
7.2. Inspections: what and how often. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 44
4.1. Statewide benchmarks for 1200-A permit holders. . . . . . . . . . . 62
The last one is in an appendix, not the main body; I'll look to learn how to
take that out of the List of Tables.
This still leaves me curious how to have the tables sequantially number
among all chapters, just like figures are.
Thanks very much,

You'll note it's not just the list of tables that's at fault; in the

Looking at the list-of-tables.pdf I attached to my initial post we see that the five tables are in three chapters and numbered within each chapter, not sequentially as are the figures. Rich

Thanks in advance, Paul I'm not sure if there is explicit documentation of the syntax for tables in LyX. You can create a small sample table with the desired format in LyX, open the code pane (View > Code Preview Pane) and set the format for the pane to LyX. That will show you what your sample table would look like in a LyX source file. I wonder if there might not be an easier way, though. There are several functions/packages in R that are designed for producing nice looking tables (including xtable and the kable() function from knitr), and a number of them have the option of generating LaTeX output. So you could have your R script generate the desired tables with the desired format and write them all to a LaTeX text file, then import that into LyX (File > Import > LaTeX (plain), and copy/paste them where they are needed in your actual document. I realised that the problem appears when I am using the knitr module (but not always). I now found a workaround which is to have an empty master document which does not contain the knitr module — and which then contains the actual document with the knitr module via \input. I still need to construct a simple example to make the error reproducible. @Joel: I think I had also experienced the error in earlier LyX versions. Best, Uwe On 16. LyX 2.3.0 on Mac: Exporting to LaTeX (pdflatex) messes up paths to tables and figures
Dear fellow users, I have figures (as pdf) and tables (as LyX child documents) in subdirectories ./figures and ./tables. When I export from LyX 2.3.0 on Mac to LaTeX (pdflatex), the relative paths to these figures and tables are messed up. In particular, they are replaced by absolute paths where ‘/‘ is replaced by ‘_'. For example, a relative path /figures/figure1.pdf is replaced by something like 1_users_user_project_project1_figures_figure1.pdf. In addition, LyX places pdf files with these names as 1_users_user_project_project1_figures_figure1.pdf in the same directory as the main LyX file (but does not do so for the tables contained in LyX child documents). As a result, the TeX file does not compile correctly and I have to edit it by hand to adjust the paths. I’d much rather see LyX keep the relative paths when exporting to LaTeX. Sometimes this actually works - but I don’t know why. Can anyone help? Thank you, Uwe

You could add \renewcommand{\tablefootnote}{\footnote} to the document
preamble. (If you do this a lot, you might want to cobble together a module for
it.)
Paul
Thank you Paul! This works fine and takes me out of immediate danger zone. I
guess a module would be a good idea in the long run.
A somewhat linked issue is that I get an error message if I use the rotate package in a
LyX file that uses tablefootnotes: "Package tablefootnote Error: Package rotating
loaded after tablefootnote."
Hard to find a place to load rotate before the tablefootnote though.
Many thanks again!
Niklas
Niklas,
I've attached a module. Try putting it in your local layouts folder
(~/.lyx/layouts on most Linux systems), then reconfigure LyX, add it to your
document (and do /not/ add the \renewcommand line in the preamble), then see if
you get the desired results (including using the rotate package).
Cheers,
Paul
Hello,
Thank you Paul! I placed the module in (windows 10)
"c:\Users\myselfwhatever\AppData\Local\LyX 2.3\Resources\layouts\ and
reconfigured but could not find any module in restarted LyX. This might have
something to do with my Windows configuration.
I then placed it in "c:\Program Files (x86)\LyX 2.3\Resources\layouts\" as
administrator, reconfigured and now it is available in document settings/modules.
Everything works including getting rid of the rotating error message :)
I will try it in my Mac tonight.
All the best!
Niklas
On Windows 7 the module should go to "C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\LyX2.3\layouts\". I would expect this to be the same on Windows 10. The
"c:\Program Files (x86)\LyX 2.3\Resources\layouts\" location should be left for layouts and
modules of the official LyX distribution. When LyX 2.3.1 comes out and you upgrade, this folder will be
overwritten and Paul's module will be lost (unless it gets incorporated into the official LyX distro.).
Andrew
The correct path name for the user configuration directory is
shown in the About LyX dialog. Probably there is a missing or
an additional space in path name here.
Hi!
Yes of course. The path should be "C:\Users\name>\AppData\Roaming\LyX2.3\". I was too quick and put it in
~\local\Lyx2.3\Resourses in mistake. I now removed it från c:\Program
Files (x86)\LyX 2.3\Resources\layouts\", reconfigured and all is well.
Thanks
Niklas
On Mac the directory path name should contain LyX-2.3, BTW.

Thanks Ricardo, and yes if anyone has any familiarity with putting tables/figures at different parts of a document, let me know. Right now, they kind of get meshed together and I want to separate the tables/figures for the manuscript out from those associated with the appendix of my paper. Thank you!

Lyx Tables/Figures and Section Question
Hey Lyx Community,
I've got two simple questions for you all when you have time.
First, how do you get tables and figures to give roman numerals, rather
than numerics?
Second, how do you make it so that when you're referencing a figure or
table from the appendix ("\section*{Appendix}"), it actually shows
something like "Appendix Figure II" -- so it is restarting the numbering
once you get to the appendix.
There's some useful material in the link below, but nothing that completely
answered my question.

Thank you for your time!

That did the trick!. Tocloft package wound up screwing up some other things
so I quit using that. The thesis class for the university is messy so it's
hard to know what packages are interfering with each other. You've now
helped me on my master's thesis and PhD dissertation so thank you again!
Fortunately this time around things went smoother with less formatting
issues since I've been doing most of my writing in LyX. Funny thing is my
list of tables in the master's thesis has this issue but the thesis editor
never caught it, hah!

I think that "listleft" is specific to koma-script. If you don't use
tocloft, then the magic is to add
\makeatletter
\renewcommand*\l@table{\@dottedtocline{1}{0em}{2.3em}}
\renewcommand*\l@figure{\@dottedtocline{1}{0em}{2.3em}}
\makeatother
to your preamble to fix both the list of tables, and the list of figures.
That seemed to do it for me. In terms of sources, I looked at the
documentation for the tocloft package, on pages 3-4, which has the relevant
information if you can make sense of it.

indented list of tables
In my list of tables it appears to be every so slightly indented which my thesis editor is not happy with. In the link for a MWE you can see that the numbers 1.1 light up with the actual name of the chapter in the table of contents rather then with the number itself. I found this: http://lyx.475766.n2.nabble.com/No-indent-in-LOF-LOT-and-tables-td479678.html that suggests adding "listsleft" to the options. I have done that but with no success in un-indenting the list of tables. Are there any other options that I can change? -Steve https://www.dropbox.com/s/8ryk9ihpiwoudmj/list_of_tables.zip?dl=0

Re: caption for tables and figures
Hi Katrin, My guess is you want something like this. http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/150314/change-table-caption-numbering You will probably need to create the tables using latex. I am unsure if Lyx has a specific way of doing what you want. My guess is that you want to renew the thetable command. Re: caption for tables and figures
Welcome, Can you supply a minimal example showing the problem? There are some suggestions on how to prepare such a example at https://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/MinimalExample On 31 October 2016 at 13:22, Hirsch, Katrin wrote: > To whom it may concern, > > > > I am using lyx for a while now to write my thesis. caption for tables and figures
To whom it may concern, I am using lyx for a while now to write my thesis. It's a nice software as long as you know the little bits and bobs. But I sorted tables and so on. Now I have a problem in setting the numbering of my tables and figures (and equations) in a document of the class books(standard class with extra fond sizes). I intend to have only one level in the numbering . But the software seems to set the levels with respect to the chapter hierarchy. Is there a way to change the settings for the numbering of Tables, figures ... and equations as well? Re: How to align tables side by side at the bottom?

I tried several combinations of Content and Box alignment of minipages but failed. Using sub figures instead didn't help either. Box alignment is a bit tricky, but this is doable: 1. Put a protected space (ctrl+space) after the captions for table 1 and table 2. This little trick make the box alignment settings work "as expected". 2. Open settings for each of the two minipages. Under "Alignment", change "Box" to "Bottom". Step two causes the boxes to align by their bottoms, which again causes the tables to be lined up by their captions because in both cases, the caption is at the bottom of the box. This is nice and intuitive - unfortunately, step 1 is necessary to make it work. That is not so intuitive, but box alignment can often be made to work by tossing in a protected space at the start or at the end of the box. Don't put the protected space inside the caption box. Use the cursor keys, and add the protected space just outside the caption box. LyX may decide to display it on the next line. Helge Hafting

Maybe take a look at the captions LaTeX package. Thanks. I'll take a look. But isn't the package only responsible for tweaking the caption itself? I am looking for a way to align the whole content of the boxes or subfloats at the bottom. Daniel

How to align tables side by side at the bottom?
Hi, I am trying to place two tables side by side so that their captions at the bottom align at the bottom. I tried several combinations of Content and Box alignment of minipages but failed. Using sub figures instead didn't help either. Daniel tables side by side.lyx Description: application/lyx
