There are two different accommodations:

1. Breaking other lines to accommodate a well-behaved URL
2. Breaking the URL itself

On my computer with LyX 2.3.1, a long URL walks beyond the right margin
if I usepackage{hyperref}, which of course we all do. However, if I put
\sloppy at the end of the paragraph with the URL, that paragraph breaks
lines so as to put the whole URL on a line without busting the right
margin (xetex), or breaks the whole URL itself (LuaTeX). Then you put
\fussy and the end of the next paragraph to bring back the nice
typesetting you expect from LyX.

If the result is too ugly, you might be able to make it a little bit
better by cutting down on the % \tolerance that \sloppy implies:

\sloppy\tolerance=1000%

The point is, *anything* is better than letting a URL or any other text
walk off the right edge of the paper, and these techniques prevent that
unless the URL is longer than the paper is wide. Getting it to actually
be pretty is lt as an exercise to the readder , but never forget
legible trumps pretty every time.

I'm attaching a 2.8K MWE (Minimum Working Example) with the preceding
accommodations.

Another simple alternative is to reduce the font size for the URL so it fits.

breaking long url

2009-09-03 Thread Sharma, Vivek
I am using the memoir class, Lyx 1.6.4 and want to write the following:

Web sites:

University Hospital Llandough, Cardiff:

\url{http://www.cardiffandvale.wales.nhs.uk/portal/page?_pageid=33,480404,33_480405&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL}

East Glamorgan General Hospital now known as to Royal Glamorgan Hospital,
Cardiff

Ynys Maerdy, Pontyclun, Llantrisant, CF72 8XR

http://www.wales.nhs.uk/hospitals.cfm

Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital, Bangor:

http://www.northwestwales.org/WiSSCMS-en-308.aspx

___

I have the following in the preamble:

\usepackage{booktabs}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{color}
%\usepackage[%
%colorlinks=true,linkcolor=black,citecolor=black,urlcolor=black,%
%pdfstartview=FitH,%
%bookmarksopen=true,bookmarksopenlevel=0,%
%plainpages=false,pdfpagelabels,%
%pagebackref=true,%
%pdftoolbar=false]{hyperref}
\usepackage{url}
%% Define a new 'leo' style for the package that will use a smaller font.
%\makeatletter
%\def\...@leostyle{%

\...@ifundefined{selectfont}%{\def\urlfont{\sf}}%{\def\urlfont{\small\ttfamily}}}
%\makeatother
%% Now actually use the newly defined style.
%\urlstyle{leo}
\usepackage{breakurl}

Problem despite trying the insert URL option in lyx or the above putting the
url as ERT i have not been able to get it to break appropriately and the url
goes beyond the text margins. I have tried the suggestion to put it as
\href{url}{...} as well

I would appreciate any help with this

Vivek

Hi Peter,

I have put in the preamble \usepackage{breakurl} and everything is fine. I
use a normal .bib file and I do not biblatex. In my last document I have a
long bibliography with a lot of refences to electronic documents and web
pages, then there is plenty of URL in there and breaking of URLs works fine.
Hope this can be helpful.

 Hi,

 How to break URL at non-letters without hyphen? I've turned on HyperRef
 Support on and also checked the box break link over lines but still the
 URLs do not break.

 Breaking of URLs works for me in the bibliography with biblatex but not
 with
 the normal bibtex bibliography. And in both cases it does not work within
 normal paragraphs.

 I've tried breaklinks=true in the option line of the PDF feature dialog
 but without success.

 What's wrong? ( OSX 10.4.11, LyX 1.6.0., TeXLive 2008)

@Pierfranco: Thanks! - This works in both cases (bibtex and biblatex). Is
this a special package? How did you find this out?

Hi Peter,

happy to have been of help. But sorry: I can't remember where I found the
breakurl package. I spent part of last summer learning the basics of LaTeX
and how to customize LyX texts so that they could suit my needs and really I
can't remember all the stuff I have checked when I encountered some problem
and found a solution. By the way, I think this is a common problem with
laTeX. There are so many packages and the environment grows in such an
anarchic way, a positive anarchic way which is the result of the cooperation
of several unconnected people, that it is difficult to know all what you
need and when you need it. That's why the email list is very very useful
because it saves you a lot of time.
