Thank you all for your responses.  I will just leave it with the comment
that this is a functionality that I would definitely be interested in, if it
were to be incorporated in some future version of lyx.

Not directly, I don't think. The only way I could see to do this would 
be to use a script for the exporter that itself opened the viewer.

And LyX does it this way so that you can view the current version of the 
document without over-writing the PDF you exported yesterday. It's the 
only sensible way to do it, if you think about it.
